Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Here’s one I found on the Washington Heritage site, Blyth’s Best Birtley Bricks. Think the H & S brigade would have a fit if you tried this these days!

Nice one Bumper just a little bit before my time but I know a little bit of history about the steamer Baxter had several, but they became a problem when the regs changed on legal weigths he told me the U/L/W was 16 tons so they could only carry 8. its a pity the reg no is a trade plate but I would say between 1929–1932 because they started to buy AECs quite a big Co in those days with a depot at Dents Wharf M/Boro tel. no.3723 but they sold out to Priors of Birtley before nationalisation but kept the warehouse,s then started up again as Baxters Road Services wich was was run by young Jonny Baxter a gent to work for & I do remember the railway line at Wideopen with the County Garage Adacent to it I lived at Wideopen as a boy cheers Lawrence

There was Dinnington Colliery west of Wideopen, it might have been the place. Interesting bit on Baxters, I remember the Commers in the Sixties when around and about with my Dad. He always spoke well of the Baxters lads and I think Steenburgs had the warehousing after Baxters, I can recall being told something similar. My Father also told me Steenburgs had a Steam crane on the Quayside, I’ve got an old 20’s brochure showing the warehouse etc, I’ll put it on here. Larry you possibly knew my old man, here’s a pic below of him standing infront of the Seddon he drove, I’ve also been busy with a model of the same vehicle and I’m also in the process of completing a York trailer to go with it. Cheers Franky.

kevmac47:
Welcome to the thread Lawrence, I remember your name from the “old boys” at Waughs who came over from Baxters with you when they amalgamated. Parky Denholm, Brian and Tommy Johnstone (not related). Another name was that lovely fella George Fearns, a true gent. I know Bob Kinghorne was still around about 5 years ago but I’m not sure if thats still the case.
Ps You may remember this motor. I think Bob Greenlees drove it. Oops I almost forgot Billy Robson!!! regards kevmac47

Aye Bob Greenlees what a bloke Bob was if he was dieing he would & help you whatever you were doing he ended his days working for my mate Arthur Lowdon at Seaton Burn another great lad what he didnt kwow about wagons or enything mechanical well it wouldnt mean nowt cheers Larry

Kenny, here’s some of Dents from the '80’s.

Ronnie Moore (Dad) driving A546DDC , on the A1 southbound at Wetherby roundabout with a load of Fertiliser from ICI Wilton. The wagon was shown on Longfield Road Motors stand at the 1983 Great Yorkshire Show when brand new. Dad was due a new motor but was on holiday at the time so it was kept for him in Dents’ garage for 2 weeks until he returned to work. I spent many a school holiday on the road in this wagon. In October 1987, it was written off in a fire, caused by an electrical fault, when he was parked up for the night on a farm he had just tipped at in Helston, Cornwall. (got a photo of it burnt out somewhere). Fortunately he got out with only minor burns. He had a MAN 16.280 before this which would knock spots off anything on the road.

A546DDC.jpg

Micky Toth in RPY480X, A1 southbound at Bramham with a load of roofing sheets from Cape’s factory at Bowburn. First of seven 401’s Dents had, four (including this one) with the big-cam E290 ■■■■■■■ motor, the others having the E320 engine.

RPY 480X.jpg

Rolly Dodds in PAJ275X, southbound on the A1 at Dishforth roundabout with a load out of Melanate. One of three big Fords Dents owned, the others being OPT900T (Billy Gowdy’s old motor page 73) and RHN???X (which Yan and Gerry Kenny both drove). All had the E290 engine.

Enjoy !!! If anyone else has any more photos of Dents motors then please post them up…they will be appreciated!
