not worthington’s you thinking about is it greek?

Were you thinking of Ray Hardwick? (D & R Hardwick). He had fords, atki’s and Maggie D’s on work out of Thorns. Have some pictures somewhere. He packed in years ago. His yard now covered in housing.

Thats it dm Hardwicks could I hell remember the name, they also had a couple of them Romanian built MANs but just the day cab little Maurice had one of them we had one at Collinsins but full sleeper

I can’t remember him having the Romans. He had a couple of TM’s and in the last few years a couple of SA 411’s. I remember Collinsons from Melanate. I used to get in there with my Dad during the school holidays when he was on for Dents. Anyone out there have any photo’s of Dents of Spennymoor they can post up■■?

No. He left Elddis, did some agency work then went to Peter Lane’s (then Wincantons) shunting out of Magnet Joinery at Darlington.

Spoke to one of the Davys couple of yrs ago on for Wincanton now, & is Corkscrew Davy still down in Ponty. I think Yan is on for Katem, Rowley, Billy see he was on for the office furniture company at Croxdale. Other names floating about somewhere in the grey matter but Its harder to get out as yrs pass

Great photos brings back a lot of memories for me drove and worked on all them vehicles and a photo of
the truck from hell the devil himself made STY 38S.
Note in the first pic KTN 726P Alan Payne got this motor new was one of the first batch of 1418, the first 1418 being
PTY 884M which was a demonstrator from Bells of Ashington it replaced ONL 482M (ended up at bewick’s) it had an extra large fuel tank on the nearside and when full would lean over on the nearside, so when the new 1418s came instead of
getting the extra large fuel tank from Mercedes.
MR I.C.I.(ideas in action) Forrest got some tanks made from a fabrication shop next ind est along from Benton square and we ended up
fitting them on the back of the cab.
Took all the suspension out of the sprung cab they should have been made from aluminium but came metal they weighed
a ton empty and rust from the inside used to block the extra fuel filter that was fitted to the gravity feed into the main fuel tank
still think they should have come with the larger Mercedes tank it was one idea that i personally hated spoilt the nice comfy ride of the little merc.
Great times.

WAUGHS TRUCKS.
KTN 726P from new Allan Payne (grumpy), motor nickname tick tock.
TNL 558S P&G trunk motor,Drivers Arthur Mallin,Brian Johnson. motor nickname the snow globe. The first V8 MERCEDES.
STY 39S from new John Yendall , 8LXB, David Brown 8-Speed.
STY 38S P&G trunk motor, motor nickname THE TRUCK FROM HELL. The only Rolls Royce motor Waugh’s ever had.
This motor was pure evil everything would break, leak, drop off it was i think the most awful piece of British engineering
that had inflated rubber tyres to come from Seddon/Atkinson,The two trunk drivers loved it Taffy Newman, Davy Blyth.
YVK 388V from new Eric Burns.
YVK 389V from new Dicky Oliver,
The other vehicles not 100% sure of yet but was a long time ago.

Great pics of Bensons and Waughs Brotherton Mick. Any pics you have from Norman’s are most welcome on here, it’s not only the motor you’ve taken a shot of but also what’s in the background like one of Chris Herring’s ERF B series and the Smith’s Sedatki. Another thought, why don’t you start a Norman’s thread off, you never know what else might turn up.

Thanks Mick, I think the first one was the ex demonstrator driven by the late Stu Cartwright, the only one we had with a ratchet handbrake. If i’m wrong no doubt Brian will correct me!!!

THIS ONE WAS TAKEN IN JAN 85 LOOKING NORTH TOWARDS NORMANS.

Another helping of Waugh’s. Why did the colour change? I preferred the dark blue myself! regards Mick

The dark blue was from WAUGHS when Tony Waugh ran it then Bob Kinghorn took over and kept the
same colours, when Sir Robert sold the company to the ex seddon/atkinson sales man John arkle
the colour changed to the lighter blue.
Great photos Mick.
