We bought that Atkinson second hand and it already had the sleeper pod on it. Colin Watson who had worked for us for over 30 years decided to change New Bedford TM for the Atkinson because he said with the gadner Engine it was better to drive and he prefered that ‘Sleeper Cab’ Needless to say it was more reliable than the Bedford TM’s and much better fuel consumption
whatever happened to ‘LADY CAROLINE’ that used to work for william’s carl, did’nt she used to drive a tm?
Our first artic was in 1950 an O model Bedford with a 28 foot van trailer. The trailer was made by acompany called Eagle and had no brakes assuming the tractor unit would stop it. My father said i was difficult to drive and one day coming don from Ferryhill cut towards Thinford had to race the trailer to make sure the tractor came first. He said when he looked out of his driving side window the back of the trailer was beating him. After that time rigids were longer and our next Artic was in 1971 a ‘Leyland’ Mastiff. We had at the end about 25-30 tractor units Bedford TK’s TM’s Fod D series AEC Mercuries and Mandators Leyland Super Comets ERFs a Foden that Atkinson and a Guy which I seem to remember had a similar pod on th back of the cab. Of course the majority of the fleet were rigid vans and at one time we even had a Bedford Tipper.
Caroline is Lord Barnards daughter and I last met her about twelve years ago and I seem to remember she had a daughter.
Has anyone on this thread got any pictures of a Turnbulls Transport (Dark Blue Volvo F10 4x2 unit )1988 / 1989.
Dave Wilson (Owner operator) Volvo F10 4x2 unit 1988 (Bishop Auckland area).
And a Volvo F10 6x2 tag axle Unit (Custom Paintwork and Signwriting), Metallic Maroon, and Gold Cab with Red Chassis.
(It had a “If it aint Country- it aint Music”) lettered on the roof spoiler.
All these trucks were supplied by Darlington Commercials.
Hopefully someone somewhere has got some pictures of these trucks.
i have no photos of Turnbulls F10 but i can remember it well,im sure the chassis snapped behind the cab and it was replaced with a L reg f10 which would of been his last wagon,he also had a very smart 8 wheeler F7 sleeper cab with a 16 speed box but again no photos, the only one i have is this one of his transcontinental.
F7Sid you must be a magician, you always seem to find anything your asked for!!! Heres a test Waugh’s Borderer, NTY 683M. £20 to the charity of your choice if you come up trumps. regards kevmac47.
Its a bit naughty expecting Sid to come up with an individual vehicle but on past results he may be able to do it. 8lxbv8brian did think one of his pics showed it in the background but I’m not convinced as you can’t see the numberplate. I will widen the scope a bit, another vehicle I drove was MTN835R Mercedes 1418 may be easier as it was still around in the mid eighties. Ps I’ll double up if he gets both. regards kevmac47.

NTY 683M- Kevin if you look at the photo it has the stickers on the cab which all the M-reg motors and onward got,
the only other ■■■■■■■ engined MK2 ATKI with a red grill like NTY 683M was Brian Johnson’s but that was on a L-reg
so it would have been sign written which was smaller and the PHONE part above the numbers sloped upward so, as you say you carnt see the reg,BUT i would still say its your old ATKI.
as for the 1418 they all looked the same as i remember you got MTN 835R new and Martin Harrison got MTN 836R.

Sid that tipper ran in the opencast but it was after my time so I may be wrong. Anyway I’ll still donate that £20 cos you did come up with a rare Waugh’s motor. I will give you a cheque at the Tyne Tees run on the 5th June if your there either at the start at Teeside Park or at Bents Park at the finish.(I will be driving the Castrol ERF) if not I will send it direct to the charity of your choice. regards kevmac47.

Thats it dm Hardwicks could I hell remember the name, they also had a couple of them Romanian built MANs but just the day cab little Maurice had one of them we had one at Collinsins but full sleeper
Thanks for posting the picture, but i think it’s the wrong truck. I remember the F12 in the photo, and i’m sure that a Scrap metal company from the Hobson Ind Est owned it from new.
They had a white Volvo F12 4x2 unit, before this one.
A few trucks were painted in this colour scheme, especially later vehicles for Charles Newton. The truck im looking for is near identical, but is Definately an F10 (mK1) , and had fancy lettering on the cab,it must have been for an owner driver.
The Turnbulls F10 was painted at the same time, and both vehicles looked well smart. It is such a shame that the Volvo broke in half soon afterwards, maybe a bulk tipper trailer was just too heavy for it?.

I can’t remember him having the Romans. He had a couple of TM’s and in the last few years a couple of SA 411’s. I remember Collinsons from Melanate. I used to get in there with my Dad during the school holidays when he was on for Dents. Anyone out there have any photo’s of Dents of Spennymoor they can post up■■?
