Dear me,a G88 long time since one of those appeared mind!!

hiya,
Drove one or two of these old girls in the 70s both day and sleeper versions, the “top of screen wiper” on the ones i drove was air operated and notorious for coming adrift when in operation and the link bar used to drop down and “poke” about between the spokes of the steering wheel, quick switch off and nearest layby to do a repair always carried a Golden Virginia tin full of cotter and split pins to do running repairs it was a bit unnerving if it happened when giving the old girl big licks in the overtaking lane.
thanks harry long retired.

That would be on Cookies(tayforth) eh harry?

hiya,
Spot on Vic i think there was about four in all two sleepers and two day cabs i think i was involved with them all at one time or another nobody else wanted them well knackered and prone to breaking down but still expected to do journey work i was on Donny’s Christmas card list being such a regular caller it was nearly always minor faults, water leaks or electrical problems just age related they don’t last forever i think they got used up as shunters at Hownsgiil at the finish of their days, they was still there in one form or another when i left just before the yard closed.

As you can see in the photo’s the F was on the units when they were still in cooks livery ,this was in my time with Forth.i think they became blue when the n/east depots were named Road Services Tyne Tees.vic .

hiya,
Bet that 88 was in better running order in this pic than when i got hold of it a bit later on in life, but being BRS whatever you drove was matterless you still got paid the rate whether you was out earning or sitting in the bait cabin waiting for the fitters to mend your motor, i did prefer the open road though you could only play “patience” for so long before boredom set in.
thanks harry long retired.

is there no one got any photos of elddis,i can only find this one, there must be loads out there.

One i have not seen on this thread.

TUCKER JAMESON & RICHARD MINTO

Tucker! he’s some man. his nephew mark drove the F10 in the picture, E603DJR. its advertised for sale in the back of the classic commercials mag. unfortunately its been spoilt with a non volvo globetrotter conversion and a shocking paint job. I remember the guy who bought it from tucker coming to look at it when we had it hired in during a busy spell at kirkheaton. Dad always said he should of bought it. Dan.

Here it is full bling when mark had it, he used to say it was the bairns that put the flags and the stickers on, he is still with robert burns i think Danscania

Yes he’s still with robbie. has a new FH 540 i believe. works mostly nights. I last saw him at truckfest scotland. He looks just like his uncle Tucker! It was a smart motor. i have pics somewhere of tuckers F12 tag axle units D746VRM and H526CCU. Leslie Pigg drove the latter before it was sold. Kev Reed then had H526 on the timber job. It was also Mark Dodd’s first lorry as an owner driver i think. I’l try and hunt out the pictures and upload them.

hiya,
Yes Vic i was given one of the Valley Seddons and being Roller engined they would bob on a bit a big difference from the old Volvo’s which i had to endure for a while it was great to set off somewhere without breaking down everytime, don’t remember the Comet units but there was a couple of Leyland four wheelers now they would fly did some work to a farm in mid Wales with one of them could’nt get in with an artic tight with a four wheeler even, it must have been more than 20 years since i’d driven a rigid and quite enjoyed that trip big change did’nt get to keep it though, the Seddon had been all painted up and raring to go on my return.
thanks harry long retired.

Get your tin hat on Harry, There’s bound to be some shrapnel flying in your direction after your comment about the Seddon being better than “Gods gift” an 88!!! Lookout incoming!!! best wishes on this one kevmac47.

hiya,
Ready for action Kev, but those old 88s was well past their sell by date the turbo’s were just about non-existent and you do tend to get browned off sitting in layby’s waiting for the spannerman to get you mobile whereas the Seddons being a lot newer were very reliable and did get the job done given the choice of an 88 and a Seddon of comparable age and condition i would plump for the Volvo everytime drove a newish G88 when living over the other side of the country many moons ago and was smitten, when they’re right there’s nothing too touch them in my book but the ones at Cookies (BRS) were knackered and constantly needing work a private haulier would have backed them over the tip well before i got hold of them.
thanks harry long retired.

was it this one harry ?
