tyneside:
Sorry lads it was usually Keith Wheatley but he must have been on holiday and Ken Ritchie is at the wheel.
I’ll take your word for it tyneside, sorry for the ■■■■. By the way what’s Keith doing now? kevmac47
Just thinking about Keith, we were running togther on the M1 through roadworks just before Woodall when a a loose wheel came across the motorway and smashed into the front of my 1418. I remember it vividly, it seemed to happen in slow motion but it was over in a flash. I saw the wheel coming and braked but couldn’t avoid it because of the lane restriction, it hit the front of the cab and galloped off into the fields, my lower orifice was doing a threepenny bit halfcrown movement !! I finished the trip after Keith and I repaired a waterleak. When I got back the cab was pushed back on the mountings so it was scrapped but there was a spare cab in yard and Ian Forrest worked his magic and MTN 835R was back on the road pretty sharpish. My daydream of a new motor didn’t last long!!! regards kevmac47
How many cabs did MTN 835R have i can remember fitting one but not two Kevin when you had it, as when we started lifting the cab off with the yard crane it would not lift ■■? WHY REMEMBER THE LITTLE GOLF BALL SIDE LIGHTS on the front yes some one forgot to undo the wires from both lights, you wouldn’t think two little wires would keep a cab on. . I blamed Peter, Peter blamed Ian, Norman and Rallfy just laugh like they both allways did, didnt matter was such a good fitting shop to work in GREAT TIMES FOR ME and i think the fitters and drivers.

Yeah Harry,John Wade had the agency for a while,He’d get it for a song, they were friendy at the time,Vic.PS Wadies were 6-8 wheeler tippers.
Brian, Re 1418, I’m not sure about how many cabs it had because if you remember (and I’m sure you do) I had a minor■■? altercation in the top yard when a parked trailer jumped out in front of me!!! Honest officer it really did, (fingers and toes are all crossed). That was just before the F*****G strike in 1979 if you recall, but I don’t know if the cab was replaced or repaired then.
Ps. I’ve worn specs ever since. Regards Kevin.

Yes Vic can remember Wades Hino’s but never came across many Artics in fact that was most likely the only one i’ve come across there can’t have been many throughout the UK i would have seen them they do tend to stand out, personally i like the look of them, wonder how they performed say against a 240 engined job the cab looked roomy enough and i suppose being Japanese the build quality would have been adequate.
thanks harry long retired.

most probably did get it from wades, but i guess it wasn’t to good as he did not have it when i was there, or any others . good pic though . his last batch of motors came from iveco.
he did still have an old daf which he kept in really good nic for local work , wonder what happened to it.■■

The first Hino’s to apear in the North East were in about 1981/2. I think Davidson and Adamson in Birtley where the agents.I am sure they had a tractor and 8wheel tipper. Crowbar will be able to confirm this as Deighton Bros,Felling became the local service dealer after Davidson and Adamson.
The biggest Hino operator in the North East was JT Barnes,Boldon(mainly six wheelers and i think one 8wheeler) but many small operators ran 6/8 wheel tippers. The only other tractor unit i can remember was operated by Bell’s at Follingsby.
There is a photo on page 59 showing 5 of Barnes 6 wheelers.

Dear me,a G88 long time since one of those appeared mind!!
hiya,
Drove one or two of these old girls in the 70s both day and sleeper versions, the “top of screen wiper” on the ones i drove was air operated and notorious for coming adrift when in operation and the link bar used to drop down and “poke” about between the spokes of the steering wheel, quick switch off and nearest layby to do a repair always carried a Golden Virginia tin full of cotter and split pins to do running repairs it was a bit unnerving if it happened when giving the old girl big licks in the overtaking lane.
