This might be not strictly to do with this thread but where did you take your test and on what?I took my class 3 in 1974 at the East Durham Driver Training School which was based at the old Sunderland Airport at what is now the Nissan factory. I was put through it by the Dole as I was unemployed at the time, and passed on a Leyland Boxer. I took my Class 1 in 1976 and this was paid for by my employer Clark’s Haulage and passed on a D series Ford. Also what was the score with driving before the HGV licences came out, could you drive wagon on just a car licence? Harry will probably know the answers to this.

Bri, you could drive a wagon on your car licence ( providing you were 21 or over ) before the HGV licence came out around 1970 and to qualify for a black book you had to have driven the class for 6 months out of the previous 12 months and it had to be signed by your employer and vehicle registration numbers put on the application form. I took mine straight away as I had been driving ballast box Scammells in most of the qualifying period so I took mine in a Scammell Highwayman.
cheers Johnnie

And I thought you won your’s in a raffle at your local WMC Johnnie!!! Anon.

Dear ANON. I did but keep it quiet as the raffle was bent as I made sure that all the tickets had my number on. :unamused:

hiya,
Never worked for Siddle they had been swallowed up when i started there so no idea who the trainer was or if they ever had one, my own HGV1 was obtained via grandfather rights but i had to get signatures from two sources i changed jobs due to being layed off at BRS Blackburn and moving to Killingbecks Blackburn but had just enough months (7) because i’d been doing a bit of local on a four wheeler inbetween and remembered just in time to return to artics or would have only been entitled to a class 3, the BRS and Killingbecks did the trick though, i remember some of Leyland Motors lads only qualified for HGV 1(A) licences because they drove a two pedal motor for that year so only was allowed to drive automatics, my first black book was obtained very quickly and was one of the earliest in the North West area the number at the top of the page was 00007 still have it somewhere.
thanks harry long retired.

This is a shot of the MAN tractor I bought from Pilkingtons of Chester le Street, it was absolutely immaculate and served me very well when I first started for Fjord Line at North Shields. regards kevmac47

Hello guys, getting back to GLENDINNINGS, i have remembered more names or handles (teesport) Freddie-(guardsman) also mickey ??Drawbar, and Mickey Gillespie was at Walon, A1 Auto, and sensible, dont know where he is now though. The undertaker is at walon, and pervie Brian from scunthorpe, dont know what happened to him, oh and the two guys from bridgewater, cant remember the old guys name though i believe he retired, and i have recently been told that Crockett has cancer

Well done Buzz you have finally cracked it! Freddie Mecro, Mick Gillespie at Cargo, was speaking to him a few weeks ago, Undertaker Davy Burn, Brian Marlow was at Walon a few years ago, The two Bridgewater Men Dave Rubery (Crockett), Alan Evans ( Jakie Mann after the hostage) cannot emagine he can still be around, looked knackered 15years ago.

Hi paw, I must say i was a bit shocked after reading this post, however before it gets out of hand dave rubery is very much alive and still working for paragon. He has the cancer in his throat glands but is pretty up beat about it, I bumped into him at corby on wednesday and apparantly alan evans is running the geriatrics around in a minibus :sunglasses:

Hi, buzza
Will pass that news onto Brian Hubbard, Screwloose told Brian, Dave had passed away. Good news anyway.

Thanks to the small minority of keyboard heros, Animal and Victor, this thread has sadly died off to what it was !
Bring back some more Glenny´s banter and pictures…Just my opinion, but as has already been said on here, since the previous two named characters started knocking the Glennys posts, the number of posters on trhis thread has totally diminished.

FYI Tim,
This topic is about Old North East haulage companies, so Glenny’s certainly qualifies for inclusion, but your Glenny’s clique is rather irritating and isn’t doing you any favours.

:bulb: You could start your own Glenny’s topic if you like.

I’m cutting you some slack here because you’re quite new to TN, but I’m politely advising you to read the forum rules, (particularly Rule #3) After reading your posts, I’m adding a polite request: attack what somebody has written by all means, but…
PLEASE LEAVE OUT THE PERSONAL STUFF and petty name-calling.

Tucker! he’s some man. his nephew mark drove the F10 in the picture, E603DJR. its advertised for sale in the back of the classic commercials mag. unfortunately its been spoilt with a non volvo globetrotter conversion and a shocking paint job. I remember the guy who bought it from tucker coming to look at it when we had it hired in during a busy spell at kirkheaton. Dad always said he should of bought it. Dan.

Here it is full bling when mark had it, he used to say it was the bairns that put the flags and the stickers on, he is still with robert burns i think Danscania

That would be Keith driving, he was a longtime subbie at Waugh’s

Just thinking about Keith, we were running togther on the M1 through roadworks just before Woodall when a a loose wheel came across the motorway and smashed into the front of my 1418. I remember it vividly, it seemed to happen in slow motion but it was over in a flash. I saw the wheel coming and braked but couldn’t avoid it because of the lane restriction, it hit the front of the cab and galloped off into the fields, my lower orifice was doing a threepenny bit halfcrown movement !! I finished the trip after Keith and I repaired a waterleak. When I got back the cab was pushed back on the mountings so it was scrapped but there was a spare cab in yard and Ian Forrest worked his magic and MTN 835R was back on the road pretty sharpish. My daydream of a new motor didn’t last long!!! regards kevmac47
