Thanks to the small minority of keyboard heros, Animal and Victor, this thread has sadly died off to what it was !
Bring back some more Glenny´s banter and pictures…Just my opinion, but as has already been said on here, since the previous two named characters started knocking the Glennys posts, the number of posters on trhis thread has totally diminished.

There’s nothing stopping anybody posting on here including Glendinnings. Maybe they’re just running out of stuff to put on, after all most of us have been posting for nearly a year now. I’m sure most of us find Glenny’s stuff interesting, it’s just when the sniping starts that it gets tiring, after all this is supposed to be entertaining and informative. Some of the name calling reminds me of when CBs were popular and you ended up with channel 19 full of bucket mouths. Just keep it friendly and everyone will enjoy it.
Cheers, Bri

Agreed but it seamed that nobody else was welcome in that " click" if you know what I mean

Was all good at 1st but then it did get a little bit out of hand & tbh boring but we have now had a break & other things to discuss has brought back some of the interest ie the “Rally” that is coming up also the “do”

Sorry I was the spoil sport but no way should you not post but please let other users post & not feel intimidated by it

I was’nt going to comment on this any more, but i agree with Animal on this matter, mainly because twinspitter had to fetch names into the subject.Any way heres one to show no hard feelings.

This might be not strictly to do with this thread but where did you take your test and on what?I took my class 3 in 1974 at the East Durham Driver Training School which was based at the old Sunderland Airport at what is now the Nissan factory. I was put through it by the Dole as I was unemployed at the time, and passed on a Leyland Boxer. I took my Class 1 in 1976 and this was paid for by my employer Clark’s Haulage and passed on a D series Ford. Also what was the score with driving before the HGV licences came out, could you drive wagon on just a car licence? Harry will probably know the answers to this.

Bri, you could drive a wagon on your car licence ( providing you were 21 or over ) before the HGV licence came out around 1970 and to qualify for a black book you had to have driven the class for 6 months out of the previous 12 months and it had to be signed by your employer and vehicle registration numbers put on the application form. I took mine straight away as I had been driving ballast box Scammells in most of the qualifying period so I took mine in a Scammell Highwayman.
cheers Johnnie

You had to be 21 to drive anything over 3ton unladen up to about 1970 then the HGV licence came in Brian & you got grandfather rights your gaffer sighned to say you had been driving whatever class3/2/1 etc. I was just short by a few month so missed out although the old Trader I was driving was 2t 19cwt& something just under the 3t but you could legaly carry 7t not tell you what we carried sometimes  Was making £13 at the time not much work about unless you wanted to work at Consett steelworks so watied till I was 21 & went on to the Northern Buses did 4 yrs with them then paid for my own class1 a week at Scotswood then test on the Mon £90 at the time. Can`t remember the instucters name think it was something like Olly but he was an ex Glenny driver

Dear ANON. I did but keep it quiet as the raffle was bent as I made sure that all the tickets had my number on. :unamused:

Here’s some pics from last years Tyne Tees Run to whet your appetite, taken at the finish at Gypsy’s Green, South Shields.

whens the tees run■■? where does it go from

The HGV license rules seemed to spawn many training establishments through out the country and that done well out of the requirements for not only first time HGV drivers but those drivers like my old man who missed out on the Grandfather rules because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was driving for Owen Pugh at the time on a four wheel tipper (an International Loadstar) and had been for about Six Months so dipped out. He did try and get Pugh to sign the required paperwork along with two or three other drivers in the same position but he wouldn’t do it, if anyone has had any dealings with Owen Pugh then you will know what a mean old sod he was.

Anyway he didn’t stay long after that and went back to Steenburgs and they sent him on a course with Mid-Tyne Hauliers Training Group and he passed the test on 4th Sept 1970, some ten or so years later than when he first drove artics. He did though say he enjoyed the course but was still a bit nervous during the test. I felt sorry for him in the days leading to this, he knew he had to pass it, which he did no problem but some didn’t who had the same artic experience as him but were much too nervous on the test. Did anyone else pass their test with Mid-Tyne North Shields, they seemed to be around for a while. I still have his certificate of training and his old HGV licenses all of which he kept and most importantly to him his official test receipt with ‘Passed Class 1’ on the back.
Cheers Franky

Been meaning to put these on for a while, hope they will be of interest to at least some of you.

I think it was pot luck as there was no training for any of us at Pickfords we got a leaflet to read and a test date but this was as soon as they came out and we all went very early and the first 7 all passed and it was one of the more experienced drivers who failed first time and in the morning he had moved a load from Chapeltown to the railway goods yard which was about 130 feet long. I know my first licence number was 900 and something starting which a few 0s as I was first sent being the youngest and having taken my PSV a few years earlier they thought I would make a good test case or idiot.

The Tyne Tees Run is on the first Sunday in June, the 5th, and starts at the retail park that used to be the racecourse in Stockton just off the A66. It runs via Sedgefield onto the motorway to Chester-Le-Street Civic Centre for a half time halt and then via Penshaw Monument and Sunderland, along the seafront to Gypsy’s Green Stadium at South Shields. They usually have an entry of about 100 vehicles including wagons, busses and vans and is well worth seeing. Hope this helps.

TUCKER JAMESON & RICHARD MINTO

Tucker! he’s some man. his nephew mark drove the F10 in the picture, E603DJR. its advertised for sale in the back of the classic commercials mag. unfortunately its been spoilt with a non volvo globetrotter conversion and a shocking paint job. I remember the guy who bought it from tucker coming to look at it when we had it hired in during a busy spell at kirkheaton. Dad always said he should of bought it. Dan.

I worked for Miles Druce Metals (Hebburn) at the time the test was introduced, although I qualified for a class2 licence I really wanted a class1, so the company sent myself and Malcolm Wilson to the group training school in Southampton,(that was just a weeks paid holiday as we were both well able to meet the standard required). We took our tests at Sandy Lane N/cle. On the day Malcolm took an empty artic to the test station and I went out delivering around N/cle. I made my way to the test station and we swopped over vehicles,I took the test and Mac delivered the rest of the load. We both passed the test but even if we had failed we could still drive the vehicles legally until our licences ran out. Ps that would be about 1970. regards kevmac47
