One Harry might like!

How did that work, presumably there must be some sort of turntable on the wagon that the load is chained onto. Would this type of arrangment be legal or was it a case of getting away with it in those days?

hiya,
This method of moving long loads was quite legal and normal practice, yes you had a turntable on the motor bolted at a prefixed point and in our case on the drag which was a standard trailer there was another turntable about the middle of the drag, the steering on the trailer was locked up and the drawbar hooked up to the load we did’nt have any dollies like in the picture i suppose they would have made the job easier and unlike our depot the Scunthorpe lads normally returned empty, we got the two turntables lifted up to the headboard and loaded what we could carry as a backload, hard work but interesting and of course you always had the second man to blame if everything was’nt just right.

Do any of you lads on here know of any nightshift jobs going, change overs or shunting, nothing too strenuous, and not too far from mackemland as my car’s not too fit.I’ve been on a gap year and it’s time I was back in the saddle, our lass is busy lining up some decorating so it’s time to make myself scarce. I’m not too fussy who I work for but Ferguson’s is out of the question. Cheers, Night Shift Bri

can you remember tommy fitch a driver at youngs he was around at that time started off with an f86 artic then had an f88 iirc he used to run to wales and back with stone
mick

Aye know Tommy never seen him for a while he used to come in the Ox now & then.Lot of the lads didn`t have much time for newbies you know what these tipper drivers are like & the it was always job & finish but there was a good lad called Lol Dobson would always help you out remember tipping top of the stockpile of dolomite at Motherwell first time with an artic& some of it was frozen in the front of the trailer arse nipping time trying to shake it out,but lol stopped & gave me advise He ended up working with me at Collinsons

Thanks for that one Greek. As you say it’s a fair hike to Prudhoe from here plus battling round the Western by-pass every night doesn’t appeal, but thanks anyway.

Did 4 yrs on Northern buses then got my Class1 !974 started for youngs leadgate rounabout the october that yr, same as you Harry nightshift Dolamite to Motherwell But it wasnt the best move they were stock piling at Motherwell so worked 2 wks paid off for a week worked another 2 wks paid off again coming up to xmas wasnt to pleased, had been earning good money on the buses. Never bothered going back then started for Collinsons Jan75.
Collinsons had some early 86`s 1969/70s would be nice to see that Hutchinson one on the Tyne Tees run.

hiya,
May have posted this before, but when at Young’s i turned up one night for the Motherwell trunk the weather was atrocious sticking snow certainly not suitable for artics but on arrival at the yard was taken to one side and told to take a six wheeler rigid which had been converted from a tractor into the rigid six wheeler by marrying a double drive Leyland Octopus backend to the chopped off f86 unit all nicely painted up and it did look the part, off i goes and it never missed a beat stuck to the road like a limpet, load had to be tipped in the plant got in position shoved the box up and it broke in half brought home on a rigid bar with the lot held together with chains and the propshaft in the back but was able to keep the engine running for a bit of heat but the journey seemed never ending, it was repaired and the chassis done to a high spec and it was quite a decent motor.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi,
Recall J R Young ran a four wheel rigid tipper with a drawbar tipping trailer,At one stage they built tipping bodies for their
own vehicles and other hauliers.

Depends on what you would like to do really
