Dead easy, Lythe Bank, on the second to top bend just by Mulgrave Castle. Quite a climb 1 in 4.

Cheers, Archie.

Think man, think. If it were Robin Hoods Bay you would be travelling towards Whitby, with the sea on your right. ie: going North. Here you can see clearly the road is going away from Whitby with the sea on the right, ie: north. Looking back you can see the Whitby Golf Club on the Cliff tops, you can see the Old (now appartments) Grand Hotel and you can see Whitby Abbey quite clearly at the top of the picture. Take my word for it, I know the area like the back of my hand, it is Lythe Bank, coming out of Sandsend on the A174, he has just passed as you can see Valley Cottages and is passing the grounds of Mulgrave Castle, two more bends and another perhaps 400 yards and he will be going through the village of Lythe. Go or rather come for a look at the area for yourself, I assure you you will thoroughly enjoy it.
Cheers, Archie

Hiya…one night i had tipped in redcar and got two pallets of felt for whitby.the felt was in the middle of the trailer
(felt stands upright on pallets and isnt very secure)and ive just got time to park up at the customer in whitby.
(working out the milage)so iam pottering down the 174 and see the sign alternative route for HGV,s.well been
used to the buxton area steep hills are a everyday thing,so straight on towards Whitby
By now we have come across steep hill select low gear. This was december about 7.30 pm so you only saw 100 yards
infront.Hell fire wheres the road gone,I had to stand up to look over the wheel to find the road.
that was some surprise, as i went down the hill you could see down a chimney of a small house. ontop of that
i,ve got the felt balaning in the back.anyhow i got down parked up and had a very nice night in whitby.
I scribbled on my map very steep hill and put a pointer to the Lythe bank part of the 174 but I,ll never forget
that night.

Has Paul Rea had any mention in this thread? I searched but found nothing!

Heres a couple for you

Thanks. I convinced an old girlfriend about knowing Chris Rea through one of these Volvos. I went up to the driver and spoke to him, when I came back I told her that Chris had been asking about me.

Iseem to remember that when they were building the sea defences in Robin Hoods Bay,there was a newspaper cutting/photo of an atki borderer stuck down in the main street through the village.Dont know if it ran away or what.I was just a kid at the time on a day trip.It was in the 70s.Anyone remember this or seen the photo?

They must have meant coming down either of the two roads off the A171 to the top of the village, I should think. To get down the main street though would be an absolute impossibility with an Atki Borderer. Unless of course the driver did’nt know the place, or there was nobody to warn him. 150 yards down the road on a 1in 4 hill is a very sharp left hand bend and ten yards further a very tight right hand bend, all as I mentioned on a very steep hill. The only lorries that go down there now are the brewery deliveries in small 7.5 tonners, and Parcel deliveries. At the top of the village nowdays there is a Car Park and a Roundabout, with a notice saying that no vehicles are allowed to go down the hill unless they are residents, or have business down there. I would really like a copy of that photo if you have one. What a mess it would have made.
Cheers, Archie.
