Don is still there, although he is counting the days as he turned 65 last year. Don’t know the other fella, thats where i started with them , on the cars, 3 years ago.

You have got good collection of photos, have you got any older steenberg photos, me dad used to drive for them in the sixties, I think they used to have a lot of seddon’s

I thought your dads name was familiar, he would have worked at Steenburgs with my dad, Ernie Dobson in the Sixties, they did have a lot of Seddon’s my old man got the first 32 tonner with a 150 Gardner, wasn’t quick but could pull once Seddon fitted the right rear axle after he broke three halfshafts when only a few weeks old. They had Fords too with a sprinkling of other makes but stayed quite loyal to Seddon and had good service from Longfield Motors. I worked there in the workshop for a short spell before joining the army about 1970. Other names around the late Sixties were Bill Ashworth, Nigel Smart, Jimmy Simmons, Tony Hyde, Tony Chapman, John Dickman, Ronnie Hodgen, Alan Patrick, Bob Duggan and I believe Don Brydon and another young lad we called Asbestos Joe were just starting off their driving careers then, lots of others I can’t quite remember at the moment.

I work for the Fire Service now and a couple of weeks ago in the workshop I was talking to a Fireman and he mentioned his Grandad had his own vehicle paint business years ago and had painted and signwritten lorries, I asked if his name was Jimmy Gill as I remembered he done a lot of Steenburgs motors as well as many of the other firms near by, he said it was, this lad actually resembled his Grandad prompting me to ask in the first place. Its a small world in the haulage industry!

few more of ouseburn

Some more great pics ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– , I presume that was Don’s motor with the bloody nose, was he smiling so much cos he got rid of it or was the happy face before it all went wrong! Maybe he was after a sleeper cab. I’m busy building a model of an Ouseburn Motor Panels cabbed Seddon, I’ll stick a pic or two up when its done.
Cheers Franky.

Hi Franky, don said that seddon with the bloody nose was Geordie Collis,s he ran into the back of another motor around the wetherby 20 and Don went to piggy back it home

Cheers Davie

hi philbutler
as a young apprentice i was always fascinated when watching your dad sign writing the truck he always made it seem easy and effortless. grady’s finished altogether in 1995 I think they moved out of the work shop and used what was the tyre fitters workshop as a garage, they had two fitters and five wagons at that time all tippers.

Ha ha, Geordie Collis, haven’t seen him for a while, he was in the office at Elldis last time I spoke to him, I remember Dad liked him and Bob Aitchison, they were the young guns at the time and Bob got dad’s old Seddon with the 150 Gardner, he told me he was chuffed to have a ā€˜big’ motor even though it must have been about 6 or 7 years old then, could you imagine a young driver today being glad to have a wagon that done 40 mph flat out, had no power steering, a heater that blew two speeds cold and colder and gave you back strain every time you depressed the clutch! Smashing lad Bob.

Bumper, I know where Scania’s workshop was in the photo but I’ll leave it for someone else to guess, does anyone remember Johnson’s. Cheers Franky.

I wastalking to Geordie Collis about three months ago. Although nominally retired he was drivng a scaffold truck, can you think of anything tougher for a 67 year old than throwing 21ft tubes about? but knowing George he will thrive on it. regards kevmac47

Hullo Bumper and Frankydobo,
I have a feeling that that photo was at Killingworth. Am I right ? Do I get a pint of Federation
Cheers, Archie.

Don’t apologise Brian, IMO a fitter can repair-rebuild- make new parts- and generally make things FIT!!! a technichian can read a computer print out and transplant parts. regards Kevin.

I’ll put you out your misery Archie, it was Railway St, it should say so on the side of the Anglia van but its not too clear in the photo, it was guessed correctly before I put my last post on but I thought I’d let the old grey matter get going, it does you good to stir it up a little now and again. Now maybe someone can answer this for me, I can’t remember the right name for the Ford dealer in Newcastle, Crossleigh or Crosslings, neither looks or sounds right, amazing what slips the mind!

Sorry can’t offer you a pint of Fed Archie, Franky.

Hi Tynexdaz,

Thanks for mentioning about your first 7.5 ton truck, do you have any pictures of it, if so please post them on here.I do remember a bloke with a M A N flatbed called IONS. My dad did some work for millbay, but mostly worked from stanley. - I didn’t work for Brian Mcdonald on his agency, at Team Valley, but he now works at co-op rdc as a Day shift Transport Manager. I think he has brought a few drivers over from the agency to work at Co-op since he left there.

Phil.

Hi Mark,

I must say it was quite a shock to see a pic of Sean Whelan, and an even bigger shock to have found out he has passed away. I used to work with sean for a short while at coopers transport at killingworth (beside Alpha Recovery) at about 1996,work for Netto - we used to have a good laugh and joke, but he was always a grafter.
And after that we both worked for TR Trailers in Birkenhead, for a spell, he must have gone onto DMC FREIGHT shortly afterwards. He belonged Jarrow i think, and his missus and kids were great too.
The last time we met up was about 2000, but i’ll remember him as a great bloke, a hard grafter and a decent all round good guy.
(Any more info about him would be appreiciated).

cheers

Phil

From what i can remember.
Cars-Pearson’s top of the west road. Patterson on scotswood road. Strakers south gosforth.
Longs buxton street.

Trucks.- Longs buxton street behind the car dealership then they had the new premises built on Whitley road/top of station road, which is now BELL truck sales Mercedes.
If i remember Henlys took over Longs but could be wrong.

Could that scania dealership be the place Peter Simpson and Neville Kemp started out unless they were apprentices at Killingworth? Will have to ask and see,
