Mark, the fairies that sat and watched you are no different to those that did the same to me years ago they will be able to quote H&S chapter and verse as an excuse. regards Kevin. PS when I worked at Waugh’s one of our own drivers once drove over my sheets rather than help me,he is still around. Hope he reads this.

Apart from my dad, Bob Casey the only other 2 names i can remember from Archbolds were Kenny Hudd and Newton Tweddle. They were bloody high loads those cigarette filters, it was a long way to throw a rope for a 12 year olds arms. I have seen some Bells photos on here somewhere.

Hi TYNEDAZ… did your father ever work at Fergusons ■■

he was kevin they gave him this one, this was a couple of year after he got it

Thanks for the info on the ex tennick scanny Greek.
Nothing the matter with a bit of roping and sheeting…keeps you fit if nothing else… …how many of the new drivers can do it…i bet not many.

you still doing the bricks topboy,

does vosa still just allow the drivers to use a net, or do you have to use the trailers with the tilt boards.

hiya,
Robinson’s only ran the half shed Fodens on trunk these was straight through trunks and had a shunter at each end, London and Teesside, the long distance nightman going to bed whilst his motor was turned round at both ends,I used to meet up with one of the London guys on a regular basis at an ICI distribution depot at Cricklewood him with ICI dry ice me with ICI perspex i did on one occasion drive his motor off the dock and park it up so’s i could get mine on with his permission “gone for a cuppa” it was the only time i’ve ever driven a Foden “i did’nt need to change gear” seemingly old man Robinson told one of the magazine’s that his drivers loved the half cabs, it was’nt the impression i got off the departing trunker and the incomeing dayman they said they hated them, i suppose they was easy to keep warm and the trunkers bag was no bigger than a sandwich tin, very basic and not for me no room for “cab traffic” well i was only a lad and single.
thanks harry long retired.

Is that you in the last photo ■■■■■, i didnt think you were that old

Old Scania Trucks When New:

These Scania Trucks were painted at a Commercial Vehicle Paintshop in South Moor Stanley Co Durham circa 1981 - 1983.They were supplied by Union Trucks - Main Scania Dealer. My Father - Peter Butler was involved in this business as a Signwriter. The first 3 trucks were signwritten by him, and the last 3 were done by a local signwriter when my dad took ill.

As the art of signwriting is a dying trade, its great to see how many trucks back then were painted and lettered properly, and not using cheap and nasty graphics.(IMAO).

I hope some of these pics bring back good memories to all drivers who remember these trucks.

Regards

Phil Butler.

hello phil.
their will be a few lads out there will like them pics , i think this one was done at stanley, this was taken at normans cafe about 1984

Hello Greek. I take it that was the Amercan Air Filters work that they used to do for Valenbeck, i used to work in the Transport office at Valenbeck, Gallachers used to charge us an extra 30 or 40 quid for sheeting them, did the brothers ever give you any extra for sheeting?

Hi Mark,

Yes i finally managed to post over on correct forum listing, and only just finding my feet so to speak. Thanks for helping me with that. The R112 unit probably would have been done at stanley, - most of New Scania’s and Volvo’s at that time were painted there.I remember the first P112 4x2 unit arriving in 1981 and it went to an owner driver from Hartlepool who subbied for “Mr Chris” cakes, and the first R112 (X-reg) that was painted went to G johnston of Berwick, its was a long time ago, since i was only 13 at the time.

Phil.

Hello Phil, did your dad do any sign writing for Millbays the MAN dealer that used to be in Birtley?

Hi Tynexdaz,

Yes he done work for Grady Hall, when they had their yard at Burnopfield, and then they moved down to birtley(where Chatfields) are now.(Late 70’s - early 80’s).I remember seeing him doing a Leyland Octopus 8 wheel tanker.I think in recent years another local signwriter who works for M.A.N has copied his style of lettering, as i’ve seen some of his work.

Cheers
