hi brothertonmick
the photos of grady halls yard bring back memories when i worked there
matty went on to drive for elddis then went to live in benidorm he is now back in this country living in south shields
my daughter is friends with his son who drives for kuhne nagel and she thinks matty is also driving for them
his brother billy also drove for gradys and i think his motor was the man eight wheeler tanker parked next to mattys f7
i remember recovering that f7 from hawes when matty ran into the back of another wagon and wrote the cab off
mick

Thanks for the info about matty! heres another one of yard. and ive posted above trucks either side of F7. will post some more as and when time available :sunglasses:

Found these grady hall pics along with a few more, which i will put on at some point. The guy that drove the F7 then the MAN was called matty nickname greyhound. Anyone remember or know what happened to him■■? 2

Is that where the DAF dealership is now?

Yes , it was the ldv centre at the front and HGV trucks at the rear the last time i was in the
place, a few year back.

hi consett bell
it is where DAF dealership is at birtley but the workshops shown in the photo have been demolished and new one built in front
grady hall also had a MAN dealership there which was known as Millbay
i worked on the haulage side as a mechanic we had the four bottom bays and Millbay had the rest
mick

hi brothertonmick
thanks for more photos
the two MAN eight wheelers ran out of Hawthorn colliery to Dawdon there were four motors in total running from there and they were double shifted
they replaced ERF eight wheelers which had Gardner 180s and david brown gearboxes

Any of you lads from Grady Hall’s remember a driver called Alan Ward now sadly deceased. I think he only worked there a short while back end of the 80’s.He previously worked for Freightliners at Follingsby. Has anybody got any pics from there. I worked at Ferguson’s with a driver called Doug Tilley who used to be a crane driver at Follingsby. When I worked at Les Samson’s on Sunderland we regularly ran boxes into Freighliners and I can remember S&N bringing Lancashire Flats in there as well as loads coming down from Alcan on them.

Some more old companies that i dont think have been mentioned yet. R & N Transport,Transport Services, Bank House Motors, Brown Wharrior, Brunskills, NMU who used to operate out of Rowntrees. A company that used to run old green motors, mainly Atkis, i think they were called Dunston Haulage and Archbolds had a fair few motors based up here, my old man used to drive a Guy wagon and drag for them before he got promoted to a Leyland Buffalo. They used to do all the work out of cigarette components at Jarrow with the wagon and drags to the ciggy factories at Nottingham, Glasgow and Stirling. I should have spent more time at school than travelling the country in them old motors with me dad

I remember Archbold wagon & drags mainly Big Js always high loads could remember a couple of their drivers by face but cant remember names.
On another note nobody stuck any pics of Bells of Ashington on here yet always looked well ERF`s & 1418 mercs with their van trailers, used to park regular at Sheperds Bush & were all members of Mecca bingo (cheap beer & a chance to win something)

Apart from my dad, Bob Casey the only other 2 names i can remember from Archbolds were Kenny Hudd and Newton Tweddle. They were bloody high loads those cigarette filters, it was a long way to throw a rope for a 12 year olds arms. I have seen some Bells photos on here somewhere.

Hi TYNEDAZ… did your father ever work at Fergusons ■■

Loaded with one of Hendersons when i was on for Collinsons, out of the tracter plant Basildon on a Friday for Midlesboro dock, supposed to be arranged to tip Sat Morning. Well as you might guess no chance so we both dropped the trailers on the dock & bounced home till the Monday morning, when I arrived at the dock Hendersons driver was already there had dropped his trailer under the crane & had picked mine up to do the same, Would you get drivers to do that these days? I have the game on trying to get men I work with to give you awave & Flash these days.
I also remember the rate for the job £30 quid a tracter & we both had 3 even around that time late 70s I dont think it would have paid essex to Midlesboro back to Chopwell then back to Middlesboro :frowning:

few more of ouseburn

Did they have a Foden Half cab on general haulage i can remember seeing one around sure it was them.

Your right Brian they did have a half cab Foden (Im,suprised you can even think that name never mind write it down you must be mellowing in your dotage). I often wondered what the driver did with his overnight bag in this motor. I’m sure Mark will pull a pic out of his magic hat.

Hi kevin

this is the only half cab i have its not a north east company though, i remember the one my dad had at freeways but he did not have it very long.
