Some good old photo’s coming out of the closet on here, that McPhees Aki artic looks the business, good run down on the Waugh’s motors too. I remember my Dads mate Bobby Duggan left Steenburgs to drive for Waugh late Sixties and one day a few weeks later came steaming along the quay horn blearing and threw the lot on scattering the group of drivers having a natter, mad as a hatter. While they had a bit crack it gave me a chance to have a good look in and around his Aki, always thought it was a proper macho wagon. As he was leaving someone asked where he was going, he shouted back, The gaffer said ‘Bobby ya gan ti Hyde’, but a haven’t fund anywhere gud enuff ti hide yit! Just the sort of daft patter that’s gone on for years and you don’t miss until its gone. Cheers Franky.

Bumper, its time you reminded all of us senile Tr-uckers about the time and venue of the next get together.PS.Do you think Harry Long Retired’s electric bath chair could make it cos i’m sure lots of us would like to meet
or be re-aquainted with him.

Well Harry, You’d better bring your Barley Water if your needing a drink cos Geordie Walton is well known for his short arms and VERY deep pockets!! I know “Young Geordie” so I hope he turn up also, If my newly re-aquainted old pal Brian Hair turns up he will be able to tune your 8lxb bath chair to "big ■■■■■■■"standard and you will always be at the front of the queque on pension day. regards kevmac47.

Brian, that brings back memories, i’ve just been talking to Eric Burn about this gathering on Dec 27th
he’s going to mention it to Davy Blyth so he might be there I really hope so!!! Have you got any pics of
MTN835R (Adolphs Revenge) my old 1418? Kevmac47.
P&G City road The Merc is a 1619 nicknamed the sewing machine which was on the day and night trunk
to trafford park with the truck from HELL STY 38S THE DEVIL himself made that truck not
SEDDON/ATKINSON.
Poor Billy geoheghan got the 1619 for general work as it was taken off the trunk as it was not up to it
and was replaced by the First V8 Mercedes 558S carnt remember the first three letters.
Kevin remember this ? Eric got it for the 6 months it was on demo and Joe pepper got the 2300 DAF for six month.
Tried to get a picture of the daf but MR PEPPER just drove off.
It had an automatic or semi-automatic gearbox i think new for scania at the time.
The Atkinson with the red grill in the background is BJR 628K. Gardner 180, 6 speed David Brown gearbox,
kirkstall front group rear axles.

Theres another name from the dim and dark past.I’m sure Bob Duggan finished his driving career at Durham Chemicals.
Iremember his younger brother Jimmy also worked for Waugh’s for a short while.

Well named “Cracker” there was a man who lived life to the limit. His party piece in the pub was to hang himself up on the hatstand
so he could get more beer down his neck. This guy only had one lung after being wounded in WW2 he was as hard as nails but such a lovely man, sadly missed.
I remember but it was BRIGHT YELLOW and looked daft mind i still think they should have given that motor to
Ronnie Marsh as it was just the right size inside for him.
I painted Tommy Fletts double bumpers in silver and red when he got his N-reg 250 ■■■■■■■ didn’t get out the yard i
had to re-do it in the white and black strips.
it looked amazing Tommy tried to persuade you know who but he was having none of it.
GVK 369N, Gardner 240, 8-SPEED DAVID BROWN GEARBOX, Group axles front and rear.
This was Kris Christensen’s motor from new but the driver who had it after Kris, when the photo was taken was Terry Middleton
who can be seen in the back ground talking to John Hook who is standing beside GFT 145N .
The original GFT 145N had a Jennings sleeper conversion but was involved in an accident and came back with just the day cab after repair.
Brian are you going to make the effort and get to the get together on the 27th. It would be good to see you, its been along time!! :

Yeah Durham Chemicals rings a bell Kev, I’m sure he was still there when he became ill with Leukaemia and passed away at an all too early age, I remember the old man was quite upset when he heard, they looked like each other and sometimes got taken for Brothers. Bob was always game for a joke or wind up, poor Ray Cardwell the mild traffic manager at Steenburgs was usually the ■■■■ of these jokes, they had him demented at times. Franky.

Very tidy! This looks like the Atkinson ‘Nightingale’ sleeper conversion, with the full roof

Wouldn’t it have had a Group rear axle and a Kirkstall front axle? Our 1974 Borderer has that combination, and I’m not aware of coming across a Mk.2 Atki with a Seddon front axle
Nice pics of a tidy fleet, by the way!

You have me thinking now ? twas a long time ago all the M reg motors had kirkstall fronts and the early
N reg did RTY 17N did but Tommy Fletts 250 ■■■■■■■ N reg and this N reg and KFT 511P had the group front axle
as the kirkstall front and rear axles never gave any problems, but the group axle front was all ways wanting its bearings
adjusted and the rear was a disaster hub oil seals and diff pinion seals and shimming they were so much hard work.
mind you i could be wrong.
Re-RTY 17N Yes it had the full roof sleeper as did another N reg Tommy johnson — 396N was its driver, RTY 17N had the two large square windows in the rear and Tommys — 396N had the normal narrow long rear windows.
I used to service an N reg Borderer. It had a Kirkstall front axle as I remember it cracked through at one of the u bolt holes.I seem to remember talking to an FTA inspector who said that was a common fault with those axles.
I often wonder where that unit went.It belonged to W & M Watson of Broxburn who had it from new.
