Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

To Consettbell.
Thankyou for uploading the Siddle C Cook photographs and also Garry Pratt for his permission,The Scammell shown SPT 500E delivered a Kue Ken crusher to a quarry in Pontypridd South Wales when it was almost new in 1968.I can remember it as if it was yesterday the Scammell was pulling a drawbar trailer with the crusher which weighed in at around 55 tons.I wonder if that driver is around today?.The crusher was made at Armstrong Whitworths in Gateshead.
regards graham.

hiya,
Never give the 80 series a thought Chris but they gave me nightmares don’'t know how they managed to get rated as twenty tonners they could’nt pull the blankets off a cot,the first time i climbed into the cab i was impressed, the first time I let the clutch out i was dismayed, don’t know about Simmo’s don’t particularly see many motors now i’ve become a back street driver now since i got done for speeding and picked up three points and the cost of three decent bottles of single malt.

A bit out of town but what about Ridleys from Allendale with red wagons and was it Crawfords from Haltwhistle? - anyway blue wagons I think, their yard was near a cafe on the A69 going towards Brampton. There was another haulier from Ponteland but I can’t recall the name.
Harry, you are right about that lot from Bedlington with tippers - James was it,they ran at max warp and I never saw one parked up either (probably 'cos I didn’t park up much mesen) Have Burn Brothers been mentioned and Simpsons from Stocksfield and there was another from Rookhope Co Durham.

I often wondered what ever happened to Ridleys.

There seem to be threads for every part of the country except the north east, so howzabout setting one off. Theres plenty to go at and a few have been mentioned elsewhere such as Cawthornes, VanHee,Clarks, but what about Murray Hoggs, Jakey Adams, Fergusons of Blyth, Bells of Ashington, T T Walkers, Elddis, and what about a mention for Norman’s cafe at Brotherton a favourite watering hole for scores of North East lads.

yes i remember normans very well when i worked at flowers transport at york we use to fiddle home regular from their, how about Barn FatherWilks to add to your list

quote= beefeater spent many years using Normans sleeping in the rooms long before Steetley replaced the Leyland 8-leggers with Foden sleeper cabs always plenty of grub a good meeting place all good lads who used it, a sad day when it closed.

I,was talking to Andy Mitchell a few weeks at the “Derry” he is long past retiring but still
works three days a week for the consett airforce. He told me he did pack it in but got
bored after six months and went back to work. Hello Bumper, did you know that
Ralph Crow had a bad accident last friday? He has been clearing out his yard and got
knocked over by a forklift truck he was trying to start after it ran out of fuel.
His leg is badly broken and he was going to have an operation earlier this week
but I havnt heard anymore news as ive been away all week.PS,104 weeks to
go and counting !!!

hiya,
Should’ve known that, my son in law is the under manager in the confectionery wholsalers (Hancocks) which is right next door to their Drum Ind Est depot, from there you can see Simmo’s motors going in and out and parked up, very nice fleet they used to subbie to Cookies BRS out of the Jarrow steelworks years ago i think.
thanks harry long retired.

some great photos on here, love the siddle cook ones. the marley tiles photo looks like witton castle truck show, i took this of my f10 about 1988
