Hi “tyneside”, Thats a good photo of Youngs motor, IIRC Stan started another haulage Co up at Jarrow called Geordie Express Transport, After the demise of Youngs long standing haulage Co, I remember have a conversation with your late Farther when Youngs were in deep trouble money wise, Stan went to your Dad for advice, But sadley it was all too late, Your Dad was very concerned about this awful situation for Stan, As Youngs was a very old established family firm, Just like Peacocks of Eighton Banks, Stay safe my friend, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry Young’s has some good work and we often helped them out. The work was usually leading timber off the boats around the various merchants on Tyne Dock, sometimes 2 or 3 boats a week. Other times it would be pit props out to the collieries.
“Old Stan” died in the mid seventies and “ Young Stan” took over. Along with my Dad they both had a stint as Tyneside RHA chairman.
The drivers strike caused them huge financial problems and Unfortunately they went down not long after the strike finished.
IIRC the Geordie in Geordie Express had been the fitter at Young’s for a number of years and Stan started the new business with him. Haven’t seen or heard from either of them for years.

Hope you and the family are well.

Tyneside

I came across an old calendar during a tidy and this Mike Jefferies painting of a Brown-Wharrier Transcon. I haven’t heard a lot about this company on here although I almost had a job there at one time but had a choice of another and took that. Did anyone on here know much about them or even worked for them. Franky.

IIrC Peter Brown was ex Cawthorn Sinclair traffic clerk, not sure where Alan Wharrier came, from used to see them quite often in one or two of my local pubs.
Started in the early seventies, I don’t think either of them had a HGV licence. Seem to do really well on the international work but then disappeared as quickly as they had started.

Oily

Cheers for those pics Oily and the reply Tyneside, yes the company did seem to disappear quickly maybe the easing of the continental work hit them. The livery was almost the opposite of Van Hee’s, judging by the photo’s they had a varied fleet too. Franky.

IIRC, Did they move into Capstaffs old depot on the Valley, , Regards Larry.

I Can well remember Cappies opening this New Depot on The Valley, It was IIRC Called The Highway Transport Cafe, IIRC It had a licenend Bar. It was a hit from day one with out of town long haul drivers, And I was told that the nosh was spot on as well by A Bow Bella from London who worked for Dodds Transport London, The good old days in my book, But sadley gone forever    ,Regards Larry.
