Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Hi Harry, IIRC They were still trading in the earley 70s, They had some Commer Artics at that time, But thats all I can remember about them, Regards Larry.

j w capstaff.jpgHi Harry, NMP. But IIRC This was taken on the North Circuler London, Regards Larry.

NMP. But very good if I may say so, Regards Larry.

Larry I seem to remember Cappies back in the latish 60s getting the odd
load out of Bowkers my then company for the new fruit and veg market
on the TVTE, I can well remember being one of the very first drivers in
the new market with a load of tomato’s from Shoreham, was a quick tip
back then fruit and veg was Bowker’s bread and butter in those days.

Two cracking photos of 2 Guy’s posted by Larry, don’t know much about that model, what year and spec would they have been and we’re they any good…

I reckon the engines would have been either Meadows or Gardner but I wonder if Guys had started using AEC 7:7’s by that time. Cheers Bewick.

Just Done a quick search, looks like the J W Capstaff liquidators were Appointed in May 1970 and the company was finally dissolved and struck off early 1975. Tyneside

IIRC, Did they move into Capstaffs old depot on the Valley, , Regards Larry.

Got a feeling you may be right there Larry. Tyneside

I Can well remember Cappies opening this New Depot on The Valley, It was IIRC Called The Highway Transport Cafe, IIRC It had a licenend Bar. It was a hit from day one with out of town long haul drivers, And I was told that the nosh was spot on as well by A Bow Bella from London who worked for Dodds Transport London, The good old days in my book, But sadley gone forever    ,Regards Larry.

Hiya,
Larry how long did Cappies remain in business they seemed to just vanish,

Harry, I have something ringing a bell in my head about Capstaffs being taken over by HTS , they definitely took the depot over. I think their vehicles and depot (HTS) were used as props in the TV series “The Brothers”. It was a long time ago so I hope I’m not getting confused in my old age!  Regards Kev.

One of Capstaff’s Commer units here in this Peter Davies photo, with one of four of Armstrong’s Comets heading South on the A1 with a Crow’s trailer and possibly a Waugh Road Services Aki in the background, unfortunately no date with this pic. The GUY models were Invincible MkI’s but with the Bowyer Bros GRP cab which was an option to the Willenhall cab by the mid 50’s. The Invincible was originally named Goliath but objections from the German Goliath Crane Co meant GUY would need a name change so chose an earlier pre-war bus name, Invincible. GUY approached AEC to supply them with chassis in kit form to be built up by GUY. The reason being GUY wanted to have the chassis bolted as was their practice and not rivetted as AEC did, so that the cross member locations would be reamed precisely to the bolt size, they also used AEC axles, braking and steering gear. The Gardner 6LW mated to a 5 speed DB box was originally fitted but later the Meadows 6DC 630 engine could be chosen. By 1958 the new MkII Invincible and Warrior range replaced the MkI. Franky.

I see you are in lockdown now , so poor old Larry won’t be able to escape the wrath either . I do hope that you both have ample supplies of amber nectar to get you through the crisis ( that’s if Mrs Dunbar doesn’t lock the cabinet ) . Does it count as essential medication ? No worries with Covid with you two , if it gets in your bloodstream it will die of alcohol poisoning , you could use your blood for hand sanitising lol .
