Hi Bumper, Would this be Rutherfords from North Shields that the late Davey Forster drove for I wonder  , I remember them Doing a change over on the Forth Bridge years ago with four wheelers loaded with shell fish Etc, Regards Larry.

Rutherfords had a workshop next to ours in Alfie Ellis’s yard at Little Benton Farm late 60’s, two blonde haired Brothers were the fitters but I’m sure they were Rutherfords too. My Apprentice mate Ritchie Hewitt went to work for them when Ellis sold out to Crows, my other pal there Phil Webster went to Turk Plant Hire who also had a workshop on site, these were old Nissen hut buildings. Phil later set up Webster Plant Haulage which is still going. Happy days Franky.

Larry, Ray Thompson, was one of them on a dodge 4 wheeler think other driver was Stuart cartwright nearly sure the both started at waugh’s when rutherford pack up.

Jim, Ray and Stuart were at Waughs when I first started there. Stu Cartwright was there till he retired as far as I recall? Ray Thompson was on a piece of elastic! He was back and forward several times. Hope your well Jim? It’s a good job we had an earlier than usual spring gathering this year eh? Regards Kev.

Can anyone confirm if Elliott Earthmoving from Springwell, Gateshead bought a Mack Interstater around 1979/80,and if they did
has anyone a photo of it ?

   you’re right there Jim, both of them went through the Transport Directory at least once.

I know Ray worked at Steenbergs for a little while too, probably mid 60’s. I remember Dad told me him and his mate Bill Ashworth were loading 200cwt bags all handball one day and the gaffer turned up with Ray saying he was a new starter and with his build he would easily show them how to load those bags. They all set about it but it wasn’t long before Ray was struggling he was just grabbing the bags around the middle and waddling up the trailer so was soon knackered. Bill stopped him and showed him how to get the bags onto the shoulder in one movement and into place. Despite Bill being slightly built although wiry both him and my Father knew the technique. Give Ray his due he said he’d learnt something that day and it wasn’t all about having muscles. I got on well with Ray at Van Hee’s it was a shame to hear a little while back he was suffering with dementia, anyone know how he is? Franky.

Sadley he passed away some years ago, He was one of my best mates from school at Seaton Burn, He was big Ray & I was little Lawrence, But I was his minder    , He was a very laid back lad in those days but of course when we left school & started going to various dances there was allways someone looking for bother & he seemed to attract it, I remember once when this ruff looking lad cracked him out for a fight, Ray said he didnt want any bother & this lad said he was too scared to take him on , So I stepped in I said look if you want to fight him you will have to fight with me first, He was very taken back & said well I was only kidding you know & walked away, Mind you I was pleased that he did, I might have got a pasting  , But once the word was out that he had a short arse minder he never had anymore bother Im pleased to say, Happy young days,   , He allways called me Lawrence right up till he passed away, Regards Larry.

Ah sad to hear Larry, your right he was quite laid back but always willing and able to give you a helping hand, one of the old school. Cheers mate Franky.

Hi Crowbar
Sorry I do not have the original Or any other photos. I found this one lurking in the depths of a Gateshead local history forum on the dreaded Facebook. ( yes it is useful for something ) A relative of the chap in the photo had posted it.
I keep an eye on the local history sites for anything interesting re the local transport scene and copyright permitting I put them on here.
Pleased you enjoyed this one anyway !!
