Leyland600:
Lawrence, that Atkinson of Brian Pattersons looks like an ex Hansons of Newmillerdam, Wakefield always a source of good Atki 8 wheel tippers sold through Comberhill Motors of Wakefield. Looks like it is YHL registered thus majking my assumption fairly certain.
Cheers, Leyland 600
Hi Leyland 600, Sorry to dissapoint you, The Reg is 130 VHL,Purchased brand new in 1959/60, By Brian, It had a 150 Gardner in, But he went on to fit the 180 when he started pulling the trailer, He ran it well into the late 70s, & replaced it with a Foden 28 Tonner, He already had a Foden the I sold him in 1976 a 24 Tonner, Regards Larry.
This is the Foden , It was new to Corbits from Weardale, Then Golightly took them over, Then T.Boiston & Sons bought it, It was a 24 Tonner then But the Boiston Lads lengthend it & got it uprated to 28 Tonne, They took it to Fodens at Carlisle & they gave it their approval, It could carry 19 Tonnes payload, Brian went on to put the S80 Cab onto it along with the stearing box which was powered of course, Brian got all the Gen from Fodens Technical Dept at Sandbach, I sold him the cab & stearing box off the S80 tractor unit we had, Im hoping my pals the Patterson Lads can find a photo of it,so I can post it, Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence, Re the Atkinson perhaps Brian bought the Atkinson through Comberhill Motors thus the Wakefield registration. The late Ken Philips, Fodenās Northern area and Scotland service manager and the late Harry Jakeman Carlisle depot manager would be the men to authorise the modification at that time both Foden men through and through.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Thatās correct āLeyland600ā He did buy it from Comberhill Garages, He told me that he got a better deal there than he would have got from The Theater Garage Ltd at Sunderland who were Atki dealers at that time, Regards Larry.
Another old pic of Westgate Rd but the main reason I put it on was the six wheeler in the foreground seems rather strange, I canāt identify it and it also looks as if the roof has been pushed down on the drivers side with no sign of a windscreen either. Despite enlarging the photo the wagon is too dark to make out any detail apart from the front panel seems to extend quite a bit forward. Iām wondering if someone has tried to Photoshop the cab and made a hash of it as all the other vehicles in the picture can be seen much clearer. Any ideas? Franky.

First glance it looks like a Leyland Hippo but as you say Franky cab has damage to roof and front off side

Hi Frankydobo, my guess would be LAD cabbed Dodge. doors not right for Hippo Pete, Leyland Comet and Dodge sharing the LAD cab with short doors, a 6 wheel Comet would be rare if at all, have shaded the pic a bit for more detail.
Cheers

Hi Oily,
This was the type of Hippo I thought it was,but looking at the wheel arches I aināt got a clue?!
Cheers chaps, it does seem an odd one and I thought of the LAD cab but there is too much cab to the rear of the wheel arch and too much front ābulgeā, if the pic hasnāt been touched up then I donāt believe its a British motor nothing around then looked like it. The roof shape seems suspect too and compared to the Bedford over on the right which is well defined this mystery motor looks dark and shapeless, Iām reasoning the pic might have been poor there and someone has tried to make it look better and it could well have been an LAD type which appeared in 1960 although it was thought this picture was from the 50ās. Cheers Franky.
Just blew the pic up to a higher resolution and noticed the two Trolleybus cables in the front of the picture run across the cab of the motor, you can just spot them coming from the back of the load then disappearing again so it seems someone may have tried to get rid of the cables with Photoshop and altered the shape of the cab in the process, I got the pic from another site so its possible it wasnāt the original, oh well good test I suppose! Franky.
Hi Franky, I would suggest a Holmalloy cab on either a Leyland Hippo or an AEC Marshall they did have a pronounced dash in front of the windscreen. The roof curves look similar and cab door windowline. Here is a photo of a Beaver in New Zealand with Holmalloy cab.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
I would suggest homemade job or as franky says maybe pics messed, with looks like none of the suggestions, Maybe old german . Yank , or Berliet or some thingā ā ?
Just had a thought one of these would be more likely plus someone trying to get shot of the trolley lines and distorted the cab, this can happen if they didnāt have the brush size set correctly when they done it, the Sabrina fits the amount of cab behind the wheel and the pronounced front end!
It did occur to me earlier that it might have been one of those Albions with the cab shown below. And if the trolley-wires have come down and damaged the cab roof, distorting the lines of the design, it just still might be one. Just a thought. Robert
