Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Interesting, it could well be this motor you speak of but I still think having looked closer the image has been distorted by someone tweaking the pic, I wonder if anyone has a photo of the Pulkinghorns motor! i remember it because it looked as though it had been in a accident the roof was all bent and no windscreen but did not seem to bother driver also pillars where bent wish i could remember make but long time ago crowbar may have a clue heed

Curiouser and curiouser as the saying goes, so the actual vehicle ran around bent and windswept for all to see! That may account for the distorted look in the photo, it sounds the cab may also have been a homemade job, surprised even in the 60’s it didn’t attract the attention of the law or maybe it did and that’s why it disappeared. Crowbar has a good chance of recalling this vehicle, I believe the Pulkinghorn family business came from Prudhoe, cheers Heed.

Old Tommy Walker was a horse carter in Newburn, and his son TT Walker started a company back at the end of the first war, with his brothers Bob, Billy and George when they switched to petrol power. Here’s George in 1922. As things panned out, TT fell out with the brothers over money troubles in the 1920s and they went off and started Walker Bros, up on the Sandhill in Newburn. Walker Bros diversified into Concrete Products as well. Both Walker companies survived into the 1980s, when Walker Bros packed up after the brothers had all died.

I believe Billy’s daughter is still in the haulage business out at Newbrough, so the haulage genes are strong.

That would be right, Shiela Denham is the late Billy Walker’s daughter. Used to run the old Walker Bros Albion at vintage shows, back in the day.

The Walker family has been in the haulage business well over a century now.

Ludicrous. The funds would be better spent on updating/ increasing driver facilities around the country. What an incentive, spend a few thousand £ to obtaining your C+E (class 1) then parking up in some stinking layby or ind est. Funding training programs and investing in future drivers should also be a priority. By doing this it may help to stem the ever increading driver shortage.

And it’d never work in Britain where the already overcrowded M-ways have exits and entrances every mile. Mind you, it wouldn’t half give those blighters in cars who cut in between the lorries to exit a head-ache! Robert

There is no driver shortage there is a lack of decent employers that pay a decent wage if you look there are many drivers who just can’t get work so a lack of employers taking on new drivers as well

Driverless lorries may still need a guy in the cab but at least he/she will be able to watch the telly, have their dinner, read the sports page and text in peace without the law pulling alongside in an expensive solo unit to nab them and it gives plenty opportunity to stick two fingers up at passing car drivers! :smiling_imp:

Hi Franky, Border TV News tonight full of this new driverless technology coming up the motorway, I wonder what will happen when they get to Jct 41 for Wigton and turn off for a few farm deliveries down our way especially when they get to Sebergham & Doctors Brow !!
I was thinking of applying for a job as a steering wheel attendant.
Cheers, Leyland 600

There are some jobs out there if you look but not as many as they are advertising as when I was looking there was a lot of agencies advertising but when you went in to enquire they had very few

Harry,I also heard that Paddy had passed. Although I hadn’t seen him for a few years, I do remember him as a really nice fella.
It must have been quite sudden, he was out on Saturday for a drink with one of his former drivers. R.I.P. Paddy.
Regards Kev.
