Hiya,
TTB, It’s nice to hear someone mention heavy vehicles being referred to as
wagons or lorries, Trucks are those little things that American housewives
pop to and from Wal Marts in, or fork lift thingy’s in the good old UK.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hya TTB I would have been with one of the Fergies motors at Seaham during the time you describe, as you say there were a few firms running into and out of there when the Steel was on, there was no hanging about either unless something made everything come to a stop for a few moments then you could have a natter, this was my steed below. We had a couple of Subbies too one with a Strato, lad with a beard but can’t recall his name at the moment and young Wilson with his motor, of course they used to go like stink to get as many loads as possible in during a shift.
Cheers Franky.

The steel used to go to Hartlepool pipe mill and also Spartan redugh at Gateshead one of the fergis drivers was a canny lad he liked me mates 111 it was a world away to the MAN he had i seem to recall a ERF E series as well this was a owner driver you may remember my mates company A Featherstone and Sons red white and Blue wagons had all sorts over the years and quite a biggish fleet at one time yet i have never seen any pics on here,
Yeah I remember Featherstone’s motors too TTB but didn’t know the drivers, not sure what happened to them. The ERF was Micky Wilson’s mentioned above I just couldn’t recall if he had that or a Sed Ak 401. We had three MAN’s at Sunderland driven by Bob Lilley nice lad with a beard, Davey Robson dark hair with glasses and Albert big fair lad with glasses too, I believe he lived at Seaham, his name will come later! There was only four of us with 38 tonners then as we done a lot of crane stuff out of Grove Coles with low loaders. Charlie Pierce also had a wagon or two on the job, one a Sed Ak 400 driven by my Dads old mate Ronnie Hodgen an old Steenbergs driver. The pic above was actually taken at Hartlepool after unloading. Cheers Franky.
Good photo of Capstaff’s Guy Warrior. At Robsons we had three Warrior 4 wheelers.one of them had a reg. no. not far from the Capstaff’s one–MNL 454. The others were KNL 358 and LTY 587. The wings, front panel, dashboard and engine cover were all made from Fibreglass, the wings in particular being prone to splits & cracks, due to vibrations from the 4cyl. Meadows engine, also probably being used as steps to reach the sheet rack on the cab roof. One job I remember was to remove the dynamo, the radiator had to come out, due to the long bolt securing the dynamo having to be drawn forwards, making a simple job more time consuming.
Eric.

Hi Eric, This one had a 4 LW Gardner and the Eaton two speed axle, I wonder how it performed when fully loaded Regards Larry.

Aye Franky, Our Nigel was on it a few times with his Roadtrain, It was IIRC £50.00. Per load, It was a canny rate for the 80/90s, Mind you Sunderland rates were better than Blyth by a long chalk, The late Bob Brown used to give us distance work too when they were busy & allways loaded us back, Regards Larry.

Anyone remember Herring"s of Hartlepool,Red Livery, they had the steel work sewn up there…
Norman croad,Torquay…
FVS is still going , nearly if not all the motors are in Prestons colours but the operators licence at the Stockton yard is still Freeman Volkers and Stuart. FVS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Richard Preston and Sons (Prestons of Potto)
Thanks Brian, Albert Kelly I would have got it eventually, good lads those three and showed me the score on moving the Cranes, they were quite particular about it as one lad had been killed trying to adjust the position of his crane when it went over, this was near Newbury just as I started a few weeks before. Yeah the Subbies done ok at Fergies Larry but Bob Brown expected us to move the same number of loads as they did, no chance they never stopped all day especially on the Nissan boxes from Teeside to the factory. Franky.
