Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Hey Larry, was that paulton, down the A37 the other side of Bristol, big paper mill there,i took a load of pulp once from inveresk paper mill Denny,Stirling,to paulton…these paper firms paid well in them days…i used to deliver to wiggins teape in wideopen, opposite Waughs TPT…Norman croad,Devon…

Yes that’s the place, It was handy as you could park there overnight, And there was a hole in the hedge where you could walk through into the Golf Club Bar next to the lorry parking area, The barman alllways welcomed the drivers, Of course some of them could put quite a bit of beer away,so I suppose it was extra revenue, The Wiggins Teape place you mentioned was at Benton just along from Waughies Depot, I don’t think its still going these days, there has been so many changes over the years on this Trading Estate, Even Waughs has gone Now owned by Fergusons at Washington, Regards Larry.

I Wiggins teape was next along from Waughs bottom yard workshop but in the middle was a small triangle of waste land and Sir Bob tried a few times to
buy that bit to expand the yard but the chap that owened it would not sell at the time.
You can see one of the wiggins teape bedford 4 wheeler in the background outside the W/house in the photo.

Ralph, last time I saw Davy was a couple of years ago, (predictability, at a funeral) I haven’t heard any news since, so as far as l know he’s still around. Regards Kev.

This Guy looks like an ex Harrisons Limeworks of Flusco, Penrith wagon they did have identical looking LAO 776 and LAO 937 and were supplied by County Motors Ltd Carlisle later to become Eden Commercials Ltd .
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Was this on a P reg with a 240 Gardner in it. When i worked at Clarks he bought 3 motors to shift steel from Sunderland docks when we came back off strike in 1979. Two of them were ex-Redpath motors, a F88 number GHN 255 N and an ERF on a P reg. Just wondered if it was this one.

Yeah, that’s them. I had GTY for a spell, it was rotten as a plum but it pulled like a train. I drove the ERF a few times, it had a “round the houses” Fuller box which could catch you out if you wern’t thinking and tried to go from 3rd (which was 4th) to 4th (which was third) if that makes sense. The 88 and the ERF were still on the fleet when Fergy bought out Clarks so they did a full circle when he also took over Redpaths. Here’s a pic of the Volvo with Bob Lilley driving it on the A74, and a not very good pic of the ERF on Sunderland Docks.
