All taken in Norman’s I notice. It was a sad day when Norman’s closed down. Didn’t matter what time of the day you pulled in there was always somebody in you knew, and if you were skint Mary would spring you a buckshee plate of chips and gravy. By the look of the kerbstones it must have been when Hughie was supposed to be gettin the lorry park tarmacked, but I believe he got “gypped”. Do you remember when young Hughie was walking around with a black eye, seems somebody took exeption to him knocking them up in the middle of the night for their parking fee.
Does anybody know when Normans shut for good? Must have been the 80s sometime I think.

greek:
Think it is Norman but never pass it theses days Glendining did have the job one time but hes gone now, not sure whos doing it, could be Simpsons or Fergusons. Used to load backloads a lot out of Tilbury Purfleet etc with your lads, one of the last i the old type General hauliers & tidy moters.
I`ve got a link with your end me Brother used to manage the Burlington Hotel

That was one of the first Roadtrains put into service. Leyland had an official unveiling ceremony at Hargreaves (main dealer) at TVTE. It was all very dramatic with smoke machines and flashing lights.
I think it would be the last Leyland Redpaths bought, they had a mix of Volvo, Scania,Foden SedAk and Mercedes.
Cheers Tyneside

Stanfield:
Got these today at M6 Forton services nr Lancaster

JOHN

Stanfield,Ferguson"s brought out a firm in Plymouth,Devon,Broads Transport,Norman Croad,Torquay.

6LX:

greek:
6LX Siddle C Cook sold up in the sixties to one of the big groups. Elddis started up about1972 yes same family the Cooks

Greek,Is A.E.I. cables still trading in Chester-le-street,used to load back off them for Plymouth
my boss had the contract, untill he was undercut,he lost the job,the other firm who got the work put in a lower rate, they kept breaking down, lost the work,my boss got the work back in the end…Norman Croad,
Torquay

It’s still going but it’s a shadow of its former self I’m not sure who’s pulling out of there now

IIRC It was Henley Cables before AEI Took over, F,Short & Sons had some of the work out of there in the 60/70s, I used to load for the Pits in Yorkshire with big cable drums & reload with the emptys, The also had a depot in Headingley, Then later on IIRC It was J R Holland Transport had the work they took over R & N Transport who had their depot on the side of the Ouseburn off Byker Bank, Regards Larry.
