He was manager at Leyland Daf at Blaydon in the late eighties / early nineties then he was manager at MAN Trucks at TVTE for about twenty years.

He has been retired for about two years now.

Cannot remember his surname !!!

Tyneside.

Aye its Jimmy Riches, I bought my first Leyland off him when he was at Lex Tillitsons at Hull, He was only there a short while, & our first new Leyland Roadtrain was also from Jimmy then at Blaydon, He lives at Cramlington now I believe & still works a day or two at the valley for MAN, Regards Larry.

That’s the man

Thanks Larry. Not remembering was driving me nuts !!!

hi all
while you lads that no about mcphees can any-one tell me if they ever found the reason for a very bad accident involving one there 8wheeler guys with a load of steel plate on,he ran up the south-bound slip road for normans but did not stop at the top, this took place more years ago than I care to remember.i had parked up at normans on a dodgy at that time.
regards
sm1

I recall my Father telling me this when we approached this slip road during the 80’s, he went with me on a day trip when I drove for Van Hee, it must have been around the Sixties when it happened. My Dad knew the driver and it seems the word at the time was it wasn’t a mechanical fault although there didn’t seem to be a specific conclusion as to how it happened. It may of been speculation but many at the time thought the driver knew what he was doing and sadly it was a tragic outcome. There may also be others on this site that were around at the time and know more. Sad tale.

hi snowman1,in them days some of mcphees used to stop at the bedale hunt for a liquid lunch, then head down to ma greens that lad had not be on mcphees long, just had 1 too many and got it wrong going up the slip road, :frowning: :frowning: day

Well as far as I know Bumper it was purchased from the late Melvyn Armstongs good lady Illeen by a concern from Spennymoor who in fact do a lot of restoration work on old vehicles including buses etc, I will find out a bit more about it from Colin Hogg the next time I see him, Regards Larry.
