Hello
Anybody remember browns saw mills in darlington back in the late 50 early 60 me father worked for them when I was about 8 years old on school hols I would travel all over with him in a Thames trader artic flat bed delivering window frames or staires. It later turned into magnet joinery.or aycliffe transport. He drove a 8 wheeler AEC tanker Those were the good old days too true.

001.JPGParked up for the weekend at Kirkley Saw Mill depot, Regards Larry.

The death of Harry Nichol ( H Nichol Gateshead ) was announced in the Journal this morning. For those who cannot remember Harry was mainly a coal merchant but also ran quite a few tippers on local work. The yard was on South Shore Road Gateshead Spillers Mill was almost exactly opposite on the other side of the river.
He was 96 years old on his death. RIP

Just checked the Chronicle web site. Church service for Harry is Wed 20th at 10.15 am at St Annes RC church. The only church of that name is on Rokeby View, Low Fell. More or less behind the Rapid (JET) filling station, southbound old A1 just out of Low Fell. I think that will be the right church as Harry lived just up the road from there.
If you travel south out of Low Fell take the slip road just before the Rapid for Harlow Green / Wrekenton, turn left at the mini r/bout up Peggy’s Bank, take the first right onto Waverley Road and Rokeby View will be on the right.
Hope this helps.

Checked the DVLA website for the reg no MBB 432X. Was a Ford, original colour red, first reg Feb 1982 and last tax expired Nov 1994. Like crowbar says cab could be home made. Looks like their is a pattern of holes in the front instead of a rad grill, could it have been off some kind of security wagon made for carrying cash ■■?
On a further note that white building on the right and the buildings immediately behind that was Johnson & Watsons’ slaughter house. I think it was Mackley Pumps on the left just out of the picture. There was a pub on the right opposite the bottom gate of the slaughter house, think it was called the Eagle or the Phoenix or the Raven ■■? Perhaps someone can put me right on that one !!!

Hiya,
Two of my friends worked for McPhee’s George Walton (driver) and Peter Roberts
Peter was the transport manager long since deceased I used to drink with these
lads on Friday nights when I was home. George lives in Seahouses and we phone
each other regularly.
thanks harry, long retired.
