My Father, Frank Walton, was PG ‘Piggy’ Walton’s brother. PG had a yard back of Gateshead High Street in 1950s & 60s. During WWII my father worked with PG. Attached is a photo I have found of my father (Frank) taken. I think, at Wallsend during the war years. Note the masked headlights for blackout and the starting handle. They also seem to have had containers way back then.
Here is another of PG Walton, Guy Formidable Tractor from about 1959, it was a small pic so it didn’t scan so well.

Yes I can remember his yard in Chandless Street Gateshead, He then moved to Saltmeadowss Road were he had an arched shaped building, He also had a ramp that I used sometimes when I worked for Smiles for Miles , When down the Smoke on a Friday if there was no return traffic we used to go along to East India Dock & piggy back the the wagons as to save fuel, Happy long gone days, Regards Larry.
P.G.Walton, Some old drivers names come to mind, Eddie Bates, Dennis Cook, Joe Duffy, Pye Clark, Joe Dimmick, Any of you oldies remember anymore, Regards Larry.

“release date” as yet, while there I asked him did he know of P G Walton’s, he said
he had only heard of them as far as he knew there was no relationship

He did in fact have a Jag GTY 7 IIRC & he did live in Darras Hall at this time, I met him a few times when using his ramp, He was a really nice bloke when you got to know him, & He certainly had a head for getting on in life in the haulage industry, He was way ahead of a lot of hauliers in the early days, & The drivers that I new that drove for him allways spoke well about him, Regards Larry.

As far as I can remember Dennis they were Meadows Powered units, I Think they were supplied by K & B Motors Ltd at Benwell at this period in time, There was a few companys at this time in the Newcastle area who ran Guys, EI, McPhees Transport Ltd, J.W Capstaff Ltd, , Ridleys Transport from Condercom Rd Benwell, Of course some of them had the other engines in that you mention, Regards Larry.
Re PJ Walton, my dad used to drive for him when it was Saltmeadows storage co early 70’s.Any chance I was in that wagon next to him going all over the north east. This one time I was stacking empty pallets on the back of Bedford box vans ( ex P & G ) after a full day of handballing a full wagon load of pet food and flour from Spillers when " Mr Walton" came over and gave me a £5 note, now that to a kid of 8 years of age was a fortune. After the " no no, it’s ok I was told by my dad to " put it in your pocket" . That was this man all over such a gent.
Not sure about his son being in the Monte. Maybe a bit too young in the 60s. That would be my cousin, also called Phillip. I joined the RAF early 60s and lost touch with PG and his family. Living in Australia now. Digging out old photos brought the one of my Father to light. I think PG and my father were alike - both real gentlemen.

Hiya,
Yes Greek, I’m glad I got away at retirement age the job wasn’t what it was,
fortunately for me the tacho didn’t apply to me working for Northumbrian
Water we still were treated as local authority drivers and used the old log
books the ones where you drew the lines “to suit you” I think it’s only in the
last couple of years the tacho has been introduced, some people soldiered
on after age 65 but it wasn’t for me you’re a long time six feet under and I
wanted a bit of pension money back before I popped my clogs, just hope you
enjoy being out of collar and getting away with the caravanette.
thanks harry, long retired
