Hi Larry WVK 952 WAS December 1955 and MJR would be Dec 1957 to July 1958.
You must have a hell of a good memoiry because we onlt had one mark 5 Seddon which came from COXONS at Anfieldplain when they closed down, and it was a LPT REG No.
REGARDS crowbar
Well now I remember the first time I saw the Seddon It was painted black, a nice tidy motor I thought, Bobby Brown was driving it we were both tipping at Thos.Potters with nuts & bolts from the Scotia Factory at Airdrie, great loads in those good old days, never moved & a one sheet job.Regards Larry
Yes it was black and bobby might have had it that day , but it wasAlfy Beesons regular motor in fact he hit a cow one night in the fog on the A1 at Stnnington. The waggon was a write off Regards crowbar

Hi Lawrence
a question regarding the carrying of spratts. i worked for Grady hall as a fitter starting in 1974 as an apprentice. i can remember the old fitter i was working with telling me about the time they used to carry spratts which was prior to me starting there so could have been late sixties early seventies. he used to tell me it was like carrying a liquid load and that they were always on the move. Another story he told was one of gradys losing a load of sprats in north shields when he changed up a gear and the load moved backwards and burst open the tailgate resulting in sprats all over. did you find this was the case when you were carrying spratts.
regards
mick
Aye they were dodgey things to carry , We never had any problems as we had ramp fasteners on the tail gate, they were at their most dangerous point when they were fresh landed very sloppy indeed, it called for some very carefull cornering, they have been known to go over the side, but once they settled down they werent too ,bad, They sometimes caused a problem if they were on the trailer a long time, they tended to come out in a lump when the tipper was only half way up, & it could damaged the collers on the rams, it was a good pay job. All gone now, Happy days Larry.
My old man lost a load just outside Edinburgh when the tailboard came open on a Neville Dumptrailer. Went to court over it, but as he had travelled from North Shields up there the union solicitor got him off as it was put down to mechanical failure.
I am here: maps.google.com/maps?ll=55.003472,-1.723595
I mentioned a firm back there, Smart & Cardella, does any one rememeber them ? their yard was next to the old Cattle Market on Scotswood Rd, Geo.Smart is still about, Im going to try & get in touch, he might have some old photos, but if anyone has any it would be nice to see them on here. When I worked for Jonny Baxter on the Quay Geo had an office in the Baltic Chambers, he was allways good for some work, he also had loads back from Liverpool, & London, it was mostley imported doggy meal, it used to go Edgar Robinsons, EPRO PRODUCTS, Eldon Lane, Newcastlthen they had a place at Byker. Regards Larry.
Hi Larry We did a fair bit of tipper work over the years for George Smart. (never knew who Mr Cardella was)
George seemed to disappear off the scene for a number of years then out of the blue sometime in the early eighties he turned up at our yard. He was digging up the ballast from the old railway lines around Witton colliery near Bishop Auckland and we shifted it all for him off site but I cannot remember where to.
Two things I was told at various times but not sure how right they are.
George bought one of the first (if not the first) Range Rovers that Rossleighs sold. For the younger ones Rossleigh was the Rover and Jag dealership in the concrete building opposite what is now the Centre of Life and just over the road from the S&C yard.
He also had a scale “sit on” replica Scottish & Newcastle" wagon that was battery powered.
George must be a good age now.
Tyneside
Well Tynside, I was speaking to him a while ago at Jack Sharkeys Funeral, he is still getting around, but has to use a stick for support, we chatted about the old days on the Quayside, he was into all sorts of work, in later years , the track ballast job, we did a few 4 wheeler loads for him, as well as boiler ash, he had a massive stock pile at Dunston, Newcastle Council were one of his regular customers, The track ballast we hauled went to the Mink Farm at Kirkley Mill, it was used for the filter beds in their drainage system. Im trying to locate him to see if he has any photos of the old wagons & loading shovels the had. Regards Larry
