Hi Lawrence
a question regarding the carrying of spratts. i worked for Grady hall as a fitter starting in 1974 as an apprentice. i can remember the old fitter i was working with telling me about the time they used to carry spratts which was prior to me starting there so could have been late sixties early seventies. he used to tell me it was like carrying a liquid load and that they were always on the move. Another story he told was one of gradys losing a load of sprats in north shields when he changed up a gear and the load moved backwards and burst open the tailgate resulting in sprats all over. did you find this was the case when you were carrying spratts.
ive been trailing this thread alot but i havnt seen much of B A C (bishop aucland carriers) mentioned? yoused to be white units with silver tippers & i think 1 red & silver line through the paintwork of the cab. when my dad was on for reeves we used to run with them alot.
Just looking at the Foden. I worked with a guy called Ned Stamp…we both drove diggers for Pioneer plant at Blaydon about 1972. He left and set up as an owner (digger) driver. Wonder if he went into haulage too. Interesting…
Cheers Chris K.
Yes thats him, he is my mate, He had the Foden for about 4 years on distance work, but he decided to go back to a machine, he still has one , working a bit over his retirement, I well mention you to him, I drink with him in the club, Regards Larry,

Do by all means Larry…Name’s Chris Keenlyside, he might not remember me though, I was only 19 at the time. I’m working for Pugh’s now driving an eight wheeler but still go on the hiab and low loader and drive plant occasionally.

Larry. Dont know if you have seen this photo which i have put on the thread earlier of Curries rigid 8 in Powell’s Low Fell.
Yes Ive seen it, I may have even had a ride in it when I was a boy, they had a few of these, 1944 onwards, The driver of this one may well be Dusty Roads ? the last time I spoke to him was in the Derry, he was on night trunk to Newark with a Wagon & Drag BRS. The valley. He also had a son young Dusty was on the parcels dept BRS, But I never met him, the days I had rides in the old Scammell was when Curries were running crane parts for Sir Lindsay Parkinson at their Hewit Hill Opencast site near Plessey Woods. I enjoyed the school hols in those days, when my Grandad used to tell me when to be ready, I was allways up an hour too earley, the excitment I suppose, I lived with him for some time after we were bombed out at Seaton Burn during the war years, Happy days Larry.PS. Great photo I also had a cousin drove for Currie when he came out of the forces.
Well I certainley remember that name, as well Tommy Baty Frankie Rutherford, & in later years when I started driving, it was Pickfords then of course, Alan Hutchinson, I used to see him in Mrs Smiths digs on Hyde Rd Manchester, Regards Larry
