was used by Van Hee, (and currently for sale) what was formerly the place that
Caledonian had for doing the Nestle’ contract from, seem to remember doing a
bit of daywork out of there when on for Tayforth (Cookies) years ago, maybe in
there a couple of times.Made myself bad stuffing myself with chocolate.
thanks harry, long retired.

That’s right, I remember going there for a job when I was a kid, the Caledonian name was on the place for quite a while after they had gone. I can’t remember now who had been in the place Van Hee took over, maybe Bumper will remember, wonder how long the mural will stay on that wall! Franky.
Hi Harry, You mention Googling the Felling By Pass, two or three days after it opened I had to take a 14ft diameter tank lid from Marchon at Whitehave to Tyne Dock Engineering at South Shields driving my Mickey Mouse S21 cabbed Foden 8 wheeler. The tank lid had been damaged in a small explosion apparently. Although not very heavy, about 2 tons the width needed to be watched, the police were not particularly interested after I left Carlisle, It took me 3 hours to get to the far side of Carlisle from Whitehaven due to the delays waiting for police escorts, as time was getting on I decided to nip up over the military road and did not request an ■■■■■■ until I reached the top of Denton Burn Bank. I managed to get a cop on a motor bike to ■■■■■■ me down West Rd as fast as I could go his words and to the Durham County boundary just over the Tyne Bridge. Eventually another cop arrived on a motor bike and told me to get cracking as fast as I could 42mph and he would ■■■■■■ from behind on the new by pass. After a while I lost him in my mirrors and after turning off at the White Mare Pool I stopped on the lay by there, a guy pulled up behind me in a Bedford TK and informed me thet my ■■■■■■ had suffered a puncture a long way back. It was gettting on for finishing time by then so I went on alone as far as John Reid Rd where I rang the police in Shields where after a long wait two turned up in a Mini and escorted me to the shipyard where I managed to get tipped by the skin of my teeth that afternoon. This would be about 1968/9 I guess. I think I have a photo of the Caledonian depot somewhere, I must try and find it.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

Franky, Van Hee’s place was formerly the soft drinks plant belonging to S&N Brewery, sorry the name of the brand escapes me for the moment.
Ps The Caly depot was a scaffold yard for a lot of years. The roof was removed to reduce the rateable value as open storage cost less. Regards Kev
