Old london firms

Jess b woodcocks had a driver do his first trip to Swiss & stopped at the St.Louis /Basel border . He noticed a Swiss Customs walking towards hih The customs man did an about turn & the driver recognised him from the back. He ran after him & knocked three bales of ■■■■ out of him. When the Swiss cavalry asked him why he attacked him he told them that he had been a POW in Germany & managed to escape. He made it to the Swiss border but this guy had turned him back. No action was taken & the swiss was moved to the other side of Swiss.

No worries about W/sides,have a good Xmas - might try a Jamesons now.

A few that I remember…
Gains Transport services out of plough way Deptford
(Did convoys work, Timber, packing cases from Parkers to docks, and subbied a lot for Polish Ocean Lines on containers and Charlei Robsons on the beer/Sarsons work)

A E Drains Blackhorse Road Deptford
(Seemed to subbie exclusively for timber merchants)
I think they moved out of London in the mid 80’s to a yard on the A12 at marks Tey

Brains Haulage took over the old Parker Packing Yard and had a depot there

A company whose name escapes at the moment but ran a tidy fleet of leylands (brown in colour) from a Yard in Jamaca road

Who was the company who were on Choats Road on the lane to London and Coastal oil wharves? Now Transport Developments Group.

They ran some old Leylands and AEC painted in a real muddy brown. Still going I think.

I think this might be them Rikki but I cant remember them either. I posted this question in the SCA Express thread. I remember the former manager (John) from Tankfreight Purfleet ended up driving for them.

Done a bit of digging…
The company I was thinking of was “Chas Armstrong” he specialised in running older motors that were well looked after and restored

I doubt if he is still running

Couple more while thinking on …

Gunns out of Greenwich, still going I think
used to transport a lot of scaffolding and building site stuff

South London Storage used to run a cold store and fridge artics, (I seem to remember they had a little problem with the ministry many years ago and “pheonixed” into SOLSTOR )

Robinsons , did a fair bit out of Convoys wharf, I think their yard was at the back of Deptford Church St

That was him, it surprised me but I saw a motor recently. within a couple of years anyway. I dont go into L&C anymore, maybe someone on here does and can grab a picture

gunns are still going rikki i passed there yard friday there now at belverdere/erith

Pic of MMD Volvo looks about right driver with his feet up :unamused:

Spent hours in there loading get your notes by 5-30 already done a full shift then some bod in the office comes out with (got to be in Gateshead Market by 4am drive)
My Responce

MMD driver with his feet up.Never!! That driver was probably dead. There was a sign in their office saying " Mummy,is Daddy dead? No dear,he’s Waiting to get his bloody notes !" All the time I worked there it was go go go!

Charlie, are Pitters still going in Southampton and what about Summerfields - they used to work out of International Synthetic Rubber at Hythe,on the way down to Fawley.I remember them both in the 70’s as I used to tip and load in ISR and sometimes South West Tar Distillers at Totton.

in the early 80s we either tipped stratford LIFT  or at a firm called IIRC Hanamays at Ditchburn Street near the top of the Blackwall - looked for the street again about 10 years back but seemed to have disappeared under a DLR viaduct?

In reply to Chris,Pitters are still going strong, but as far as I know Summerfields have gone. Will ask TIR Original about them. He is a Scummer, sorry Southampton lad. No offence meant.

There was a London company called J and H Transport (I think). I used to mix 'em up with G.L.Baker.Then what about Charles Poulter ,I heard a lot of rumours about that company.
And who was yer man from Pump Lane at Hayes, used to see them all over the place but the name escapes me.I think they were mucky white colour and had some low loaders as well.

Charles Poulter was part of the (in)famous Davis Bros empire.

J& H was Jeune & Hayman who ran regular trunk motors to & from Liverpool - they used to do changeovers at Markyate.

Was that not Fred Hope from Pump Lane at Hayes. And was he not the inventor of the Hope Anti Jacknife device.

I remember the Hope Anti Jacknife device Charlie but I don’t recall that name at Hayes.I’m sure it was summat else.

:bulb: Hold on,was it Annis and Co?They had some oldish tackle IIRC,ERFs and Fodens maybe.

There was an Annis and Co. But wern’t they a dirty red in colour? Youv’e got me wondering.now Chris. Will do a little reserche.

Yes Annis’s were in Pump Lane Hayes, I had an Uncle who worked for them back in the 60’s, they used to be Red and Black and did a lot of Low Loader work as well as general Haulage, I’ve got a picture or three somewhere, when I find them I’ll put them on.

Does anyone remember another old Firm from Hayes called ‘EVERLEY BROTHERS’ - NO not the 60’s Pop Duo
