Old london firms

marky:
Charles Poulter was part of the (in)famous Davis Bros empire.

J& H was Jeune & Hayman who ran regular trunk motors to & from Liverpool - they used to do changeovers at Markyate.

charles poulter and thomas potter preistley were run by solly davies and his son ronnie in the highway stepney, davies bros were based in wapping high st and run separately, there was also goldsmiths run by frankie davies in the minories by tower bridge, later changed to bowbells trans. as i remember j&h had the first scania vabis and ran trunking services to liverpool and newcastle from that cafe site on the A5, they were then in direct competition with that new company railfreight, no speed limiters then.

Yes Annis’s were in Pump Lane Hayes, I had an Uncle who worked for them back in the 60’s, they used to be Red and Black and did a lot of Low Loader work as well as general Haulage, I’ve got a picture or three somewhere, when I find them I’ll put them on.

Does anyone remember another old Firm from Hayes called ‘EVERLEY BROTHERS’ - NO not the 60’s Pop Duo

You’ve got me going now Lemon  .I reckon there was another firm at Pump Lane as well as Annis and yes I vaguely remember Everley Brothers as well.I worked down there for about 3 months on a Presto fruit and veg contract in autumn 1987(I was there when that Michael Fish not -coming hurricane arrived :open_mouth: ).There was a Tarmac? plant there or something like it.I’m sure this company I am thinking about ran in an off-white livery but I’m more than likely getting mixed up with somebody else.

I shalln’t sleep now. :grimacing:

my dad worked for yardleys of leeds out of their vauxhall depot at fentimen rd. when they shut that yard he worked out of leeds depot on the euro stuff. when that went pop he went to portways out of new covent garden and the fruit. that job ended and he started on myers beds from vauxhall, that yard closed and everything went to huntingdon. next up was smith meters (ugi) from streatham south london. then we moved to leeds.

at yardleys … mickey mouse foden then the merc 1626.

portways… erf a series.

myers … tk bedford

ugi… tk bedford, ford, volvo f6 then a MAN.

I think the name of yer man on Pump Lane,Hayes was J.H.Moores or something akin to that.
Somebody let me know if I’m right or I won’t rest tonight. :grimacing:

Yes you are correct Chris, J&H Moore’s yard is still in the same place in Leighton Buzzard near the Test Station, but I’m sure their main place was Hayes, had Dark blue and red wagons, I’ve got a picture of one of their Scammells somewhere, I’ll put it on when I find it - with the other ones :unamused:

Merry Xmas to you and all others on the forum.
Just going to open some Xmas spirit. :grimacing:

This must have been one of Wincanton’s old has beens as it still has the name on the door - ‘Green Dragon’ and is a Zummerzet reg

Happy Xmas to all

Nice one L.M…Definitely ex Wincanton that motor. They were still giving their tackle names up to “G” reg 'cos we inherited a load of ERFs and Mercs at Maltby when Wincanton started a contract there.Drivers gave their own names to some of them as you can imagine.
That Annis motor looks in quite good nick.  .

Well, its a small world! I used to work for wincanton’s at Bletchley about 6 or 7 years ago and we used to go to Maltby regularly, the ERF’s had gone and we had a fleet of Dafs then, got some pics if you want to see them

When you say Bletchley L.M. do you mean Milton Keynes?I was at Maltby depot for 27 years,11 years under the Wincanton banner  .I was a shunter and got to know some of the M.K. drivers when they came in to collect chilled product.
Our paths will have crossed mate.Just trying to think of some names now - Tony Mitton may have been one.
I was made redundant there in July 2005(second time redundant there) but I heard that the M.K. depot closed.
Put the pics on mate I’d really like to see 'em.

Yes ‘Milto’ closed down just after I left them so I missed out on some redundancy dosh  The old depot has now been demolished apart from the new warehouse they built about 18 months before they shut it  I’ve been told that IKEA are using it as a store, The name Tony Mitton rings a bit of a bell with me but cant really remember, Some of the lads were - Dave Borritt, Barry Norman, Dicky Hart, Tony Critchley, Gary Morris, I knew most of them and apart from the odd 1 or 2 they were a great bunch to work with.
I’ll dig a few pics out soon and put them on.

I remember Gary Morris, used to have a laugh with him.
I’ve spent a small fortune on coffees for Milto/Chippenham/Gloucester/Trafford Park drivers.
That’s why shunters had never got bugger all!

Someone mentioned Dormers but was this C.E. (Charlie) Dormer who operated out of what looked like a great big bus garage in Leytonstone?
I worked for them in the late 60s after they took over Hedley Shaw’s small fleet from Stapleford, Nottingham after he retired hurt having set himself on fire paraffin-starting the pot bellied stove in the small room at the back of the garage. :unamused:
About the same time Dormer’s took over Reg Cooper’s fleet in Wednesbury and we all ran in more or less integrated fashion for quite a time with a multi coloured fleet of Charlie’s green, Reg’s red and blue and Hedley’s red and marroon.
Dormer had a big Calor gas contract out of Saxmundham and were ■■■■■■■ with G.L.Baker too, maybe he bought them I don’t know. Anyway I think the whole shooting match eventually ended up in the British Oxygen family.
I did spend some time delivering gas bottles with my Kew Dodge and 4-in-line trailer round London and the south east, leaving it there at weekends to come home after living in digs during the week. I remember Nuttall’s driver being regulars in the digs also.

you are right spardo, it was the old bus garage in lea bridge rd, i was there in 60s when they had some vans on the alba contract, we worked out of balcombe st at the back of old st, away all week with something like 60-70 drops, it is mind boggling now to think all those gas bottles you refer to parked inside that building, hse would think all their christmasses had come at once now.

That’s it, Lea Bridge Rd., it was on the tip of my tongue but I couldn’t be bothered to look it up (just back after a week in Blighty and overwhelmed trying to catch up  ).
I eventually took my car down there so I wouldn’t have to hitch hike back and forth at weekends, when the job finished I mounted it up on the trailer to come home.
Are they still going or have they gone the way of all flesh?

dormers was taken over by brains when it was just c e brain before they used brain haulage name in 1969 and it was ran as ce dormers as was dales transport tankards and george battern fand ceb transport

Thought I’d got a picture of a J&H Scammell but I’ts turned out to be an Akki :unamused:

Nice picture Lemonmouth and a nice-looking Atki.
Those four-in -line BTC trailers were a pain if you got a flat.
Another first name I remember from Milto was Danny,he was on regular nights. The Tony Mitton I mentioned was from Chippenham.Sorry,me memories not what it was.

Lemonmouth - there is a J&H Scammell Handyman picture in one of the Peter Davies books - perhaps its the Lorries in the Sixties??

All I know is that a former colleague of my fathers drove it infrequently, and the picture was at Markyate on th A5.

Thanks for that, but what became of the British Oxygen connection? Mal, who left this site a couple of years ago to start his own, says he remembers Reg. Coopers yard in Wednesbury as a depot for BO and I seem to remember G.L. Baker’s lorries appearing in Transhield livery. Are we talking about the same Dormers?
