Hey LM,that’s nearly brought a tear to me eye! .That was a Barking based motor, really up to date for Evans
.When I started in 69 I was on Mk3 Mammoth Majors, most of 'em ex Shell, with sliding doors and pop-out windscreens. They were well maintained though and I travelled all over the UK in 'em.The money was spot on and that was the main thing.
I was lucky for a start 'cos my Mk3 had a 6-speed box AND two coat hooks. .
Thanks again for the photo, mate and Merry Xmas.

Milehams had a fleet of Volvo F86’s grey with red and black signwriting.
I think they ran out of Purfleet mainly newspaper reels if my memory serves me
when i first worked for milehams they were at the bottom of sugar house lane in bow, very close to the bow flyover, they moved to purfleet early 70s, at the time we had bedford tk and dodge units all with scammel hitch trailers, the f86 and f88 units came much later. i can remember the notice on the drivers board stating what loads can be picked up as back loads, only timber, paper, concrete etc, low value loads only. it was a totally rubbish job.the day they moved to purfleet was the day i left for pastures greener.
I,d forgotten all about A E Evens, i dont think i have any photos of them, but that eight wheel AEC brought back some memories. There were loads of tanker firms around that area back then. I used to like the Crow Carrying fleet from East London, Silvertown i think?.

The list of hauliers from London is endless, i have photos of many of them,i will have to sort them out. I Also remember Crow tankers, GL Baker, Milehams and BJ Myers, and Chris Hudson, i could go on all day!!!
Not to mention all the hauliers from Lancashire, Yorkshire, the Black Country and Scotland who had deopts and/or offices down there - in no particular order, Sutton’s of St Helens, Express Deliveries (Pollock & Munro), Northern Ireland Trailers, Alfred Dexter, W. H. Bowker, Walker Trowbridge, Riley’s of Sheffield, Hanson and God knows how many more

Aye Mark,Crow Carrying.I used to stay in digs on London Road,Barking with some of their Widnes drivers, good lads they were. There was also Thomas Allen from Stanford-le Hope and a firm called W.H.Palmer but can’t remember if they were based in East London.Tommy Allen was taken over by P & O like several other well-known tanker firms.
That A13 was littered with tankers, day and night. United Molasses,Tate and Lyle and do you remember the immaculate Albion Sugar motors, mostly Fodens I think.
I used to load out of Samuel Williams Thames Terminal at Dagenham Dock a lot when John Hudson Fuel Oils were in there, then there was Charringtons who did fuel oils as well.Expect SWTT and the rest are all gone now.
Yes Chris you are correct Guest were from Bath.Went in their yard a few times to tranship A few boxes.
In the 50,s their was A.C.Dormer they had immaculate green Atkinson tankers i remember one parking down whitehorse road stepney. All Yorkshire imperial metals had a yard in lanyard street stepney they had ERF,s and Atkinsons they were maroon realy nice lorries.

Charlie, are Mainland Market Deliveries still going. They had an office in Portsmouth on Hampshire Terrace in the 60’s.I used to load C.I. tomatoes off them for Sheffield market until they stitched me up with Manchester and Liverpool without saying owt.
Yes Chris, Mainland Markrt Deliveries are still going. They were bought out by a Jersey consortium a while ago but are now back on the market. I only heard this morning that Portsmouth City Council are very interested. I’m sure the lads will be very keen to be working for the council !!
This is the only photo I can find at the moment of an A.E.Evans AEC Mk3 8-legger,taken in my home city of Sheffield in the 60’s.I remember driving it once or twice before it was condemned in the early 70’s .
Probably ex Shell Petroleum this was the Ghia version as it has a radiator blind and a foglight. .
And an ergo-cabbed 3-axle Mandator pulling a loco on a low-loader through Banbury.Reg HVG 284G,VG was a Norfolk reg and I thought it might be Pointers Transport of Norwich.Anybody recognise it?
.
Oops just noticed the Mandator is in fact a Leyland Hippo Will have to have another hunt round for a Mandator.
Around 1982 Newbury freight had a yard in ferry lane rainham near the railway crossing, they had two F89,s that were reputed to have the same reg numbers and both cleared customs in dover east on the same day.Terry vales was the owner i remember one of the drivers was wally howes i saw him a few times on the olau line out of sheerness. He was driving a scania drawbar then which i think was the old sammy williams scanny,i dont know if the scania belong to terry vales or danny johnson who i think wally worked for as well. Also in the early 70s a scammell crusader used to park up on the north circular by the crooked billet it was grey with “jackson” on the headboard.I meet the owner driver in amsterdam when we were both pulling for G Parkes of harlow i think his name was phil jackson ther was also an F88 6 wheel unit park there with the name Worth on the cab it was green with red chassis.Any one remember these?
phill only just left danny mart in the summer when danny retired and iremember dormers charlie brain bourght them for the licence along tankards
and dales not alec but marroon d1000s at rainham where cleanawy was by dovers corner
