Thanks for that Boyzee, I had quite a collection at one time Garanor, Pantin etc.
Can well imagine them as collectors items now as you say worth money.
You are correct supercube jed clampit had this f88,when terry bought it of f eddy morgen it was white with orange chassis and roof, eddy still had his long six wheel 86 at this time. After driveing a D1000 pulling heavy trailers the 88 was heaven, the 88 never broke down and terry earnt well out of it,when it was swopped for the 290 it had done 980,000 miles.
.
Had the pleisure of working for Cabmont…when bert petchey was the TM.
Teddy snipp was indeed a senior driver to me…and a Charlton boy like me…
we had a very small yard in Blackwall lane Greenwich and served the lift industry well…
Anyone remember Sumners Transport, I think they were from around the northern end of the Blackwall Tunnel. What happened to them?
I remember JH Moore’s from when I drove for Roy Bowles in 1967-69, their yard in Pump Lane, Hayes, was next door to Bowles’s (with a small cafe in between) and Annis were across the road. Moore’s used to do a lot of work out of the Rockware Glass factory in Greenford and what with the loads being on flat trailers and about 15’ high, they had quite a few shed loads and a couple of rollovers as I remember (one in particular on the A40 Greenford Roundabout). In the 70s, after the Rockware Plant closed they did a lot of moving and storing of large packing cases for the Ford Motor Company. Seem to remember him being a bit af an Atki man and i believe he was a cousin of Roy Bowles.
Can’t remember too much about Annis although I’m sure they had a couple of Diamond Ts back then, I should know more as I have worked with his son Roger Annis, I’ll have to ask him next time I see him.

Charles Poulter was part of the (in)famous Davis Bros empire.J& H was Jeune & Hayman who ran regular trunk motors to & from Liverpool - they used to do changeovers at Markyate.
charles poulter and thomas potter preistley were run by solly davies and his son ronnie in the highway stepney, davies bros were based in wapping high st and run separately, there was also goldsmiths run by frankie davies in the minories by tower bridge, later changed to bowbells trans. as i remember j&h had the first scania vabis and ran trunking services to liverpool and newcastle from that cafe site on the A5, they were then in direct competition with that new company railfreight, no speed limiters then.
Hello,
First post for me, be gentle. My old dad used to drive for Davis Bro’s at Solebay St Mile End and then at the old gasworks at Wapping High St. Also mixed up with them were, Tozers, W D Monger and C Bristow, as well as the above mentioned, Poulters and Goldsmiths. I used to go all over the place with him when I was a kid and stayed in some real salubrious digs
While on Yiddles, he had amongst other things, a Leyland Comet 90 and a Hippo of uncertain vintage that had the make more noise pedal to the left of the brake. It did 19 flat out when he first got it, but after a tune up at Solebay St, it did 28, did I hear someone say ‘man can’t live at that speed’.
We used to spend a fair bit of time at Marston Valley Brickworks, loading six thousand bricks (handball of course). If we had to go to the other works (can’t remember where that was, but it wasn’t far away and not Stewartby), we could only just get out of the Valley: first gear, foot to the floor, engine at idle speed and putting up a smoke screen that a Destroyer Captain would have been proud of… then of course, he had to stop it
I’m hoping this pic’ comes up, if so, it’s just like his old motor, maybe even the same one. Well I’ve waffled on long enough.
jessicas dad:
my dad worked for yardleys of leeds out of their vauxhall depot at fentimen rd. when they shut that yard he worked out of leeds depot on the euro stuff. when that went pop he went to portways out of new covent garden and the fruit. that job ended and he started on myers beds from vauxhall, that yard closed and everything went to huntingdon. next up was smith meters (ugi) from streatham south london. then we moved to leeds.at yardleys … mickey mouse foden then the merc 1626.
portways… erf a series.
myers … tk bedford
ugi… tk bedford, ford, volvo f6 then a MAN.
Here I go with me second post.
I used to work for Yardley of Leeds out of Fentiman Rd. What was your Dad’s name, I’m Peter Mahood. Does he remember Wilkie the yard foreman or heavy breathing (can’t remember his real name). Then there was Tommy Spreadborough, Danny and a few others whose names escape me. Tommy used to work for charlie poulters (aka yiddles). At the time we had nearly all Fodens with 180’s some ERF’s Guy Big j’s and Ergo’s. We also had some LAD Leyland six wheelers plus at least one beaver ? unit. We had a Foden with a 240 Gardner and air assisted clutch. I went to the gardens one day to load up and Danny Venables said ‘stack it up, you’ve got plenty’. So Away I went to Southampton St and started putting trays of grapes on, up above the headboard. All of a sudden the runner came round and said I had to go up the top by the floral hall, so I slung a quick cross round the back of these grapes and went to take off, which is where the air assisted clutch came into it’s own !
I sat there letting the clutch in nice and steady when all of a sudden away it lurched, the grapes went arse over head and I had to pick 'em all up again, you can imagine how pleased I was.
me dads name is sandy broadley and he remembers ted burlow, ted tunsey, old bill, danny venables and wilkie. my worked there till they closed the london yard and then moved to the leeds depot. he worked the markets as well then moved onto the euro side.
do you have any pictures.
cheers from alex.

Peterm - You mention ‘Danny Venables’ I used to work with ‘John’ Venables a few years ago in Milton Keynes and he used to work for ‘Yiddle’ Davis back in the 60’s - could it be the same man If so I think he moved away to Portugal or Spain some years back, He could tell many a good tale about the Davis brothers
Jessica’s Dad,
Don’t remember your Dad’s name, but Ted Tunsey was probably Ted Tunesi, he used to do the Biggleswade changeover twice a night.
Me and Danny Venables was always arguing. When did they close the London yard and what happened to Yardleys in the end ? did they fold, or were they bought out ? I’d be interested to know.

Yeah could be I s’pose. If he worked for yiddles he probably needed to change his name My old man had a few stories too.
Jessicas dad.
Forgot to add, sorry, no pic’s, but another name I just remembered is Bill Brandon. He used to roll up in a ■■■■■■■■■ Bentley, I think he inherited it, nice motor though.

Do you mean the savoloi stand on the cobbles ,in front of the church ? his name was Tony . I used to park in King St. next to the Mermaid pub ,there was a cafe nextdoor .
I got a snap of that old hippo tucked away somewhere ,I will dig it out when I get time.
This is the best I can do .I mucked about with the original & then mislaid it.
He he, that front one’s about right. I do remember the old stand in front of St Pauls, but I was thinking of one down Southampton Row, on the right heading away from the market.
You mean the Savoy ?
Have to say thatv Southampton Row was a little out of my manor ,I was mostly King St. ,James St.,Long Acre . The only times I went down S.Row was when I walked. Or…many years later when I did exec car work .

ive heard the name bill brandon. when they shut the london yard my dad moved to the leeds depot… well he was still based in london but went on the european side. they folded in 1981 due to the general haulage side but the euro side was still making money but it got dragged down as well. ted tunsie is the same bloke i just got the spelling wrong.
