Old london firms

Thanks mate, I don’t remember the two artic’s , but 22 AUG has carried me around a bit. We had two like that in London, one was a 12 speed, the other was four. One of them, I think it was the four speed was called rock n roll, it handled like a wet blancmange when it was loaded, and no power steer in those days, only armstrong.

You mean the Savoy ?
Have to say thatv Southampton Row was a little out of my manor ,I was mostly King St. ,James St.,Long Acre . The only times I went down S.Row was when I walked. Or…many years later when I did exec car work .

I am a berk ain’t I. I meant Henrietta St  don’t know where I got Southampton Row from.

Does anyone remember Wentmore International.Had a yard on the Barking Rd between East Ham and Barking with a lone Daf 3300 in the 70’s 80’s iirc. Then I think they moved somewhere else in Barking last time I saw them the firm had progressed to a Gold Magnum. There tilt was like Bowlers only the white band round the top had London-Paris-London.Any idea if they’re still going■■?..

Yes Bob i remember them when they were at Roy Searles old yard at Barking just before the old bridge where the 406 goes through now you had wheels rent a truck in there to Wentmore used to have blue and white 2600 and 2800 dafs and stepframe tilts i think they are still going

Anybody got photos of The Metal Box Co, they where in Riley Rd Bermonsey, and used to have Seddons, with huge Queen Mary box trailers.

Any pics would be welcome.

Little Al.

Easy ; Henrietta St ;first right ,S’hampton Row…

And I thought it was only me short term memory. :unamused:

Well Jessicas dad, that old 8 wheeled Foden of Yardley’s was one of the lorries of theirs that I have driven. The reg. was 22 AUG and was known by all the drivers as 22nd of August. It was involved in an accident one night on the A 1 at Newark when two airmen (RAF) hit it up the rear. This would be about 1965 and they were both killed as the car (a mini) ended up as far as the back axle. A day or two later I was in Southampton docks with another Yardley driver who was telling someone about the accident and pointed to the rear where the car had struck. He noticed a bit of string like material stuck to the chassis and pulled it off. You should have seen the look on all our faces when we realised that there was a human eye on the end of it !! Sorry to relate a story like that but I remember it like it was yesterday and the drivers name was Ernie Hews from Southampton.

When I was on Yardeys, it was either 22 AUG or the other 8 wheeler that was called rock n roll cos of the way it wallowed when loaded. One was 12 speed and the other was 4. Can you remember which was which ?

Happy New Year all,

A few firms I thought would already be listed…

C.A.G from Bow sidings, I think it was Caroline Anne Goodwin, red bulkers carting coal, I think they had the contract for Aldermarston once.

Another tipper firm was Truders who had yellow motors.

Clarkes of Mitcham had red Atki. 6 wheel tippers, I took a photo down at Blue Circle cement at Shoreham tipping clinker.

I was a subbie for a while on Seabourne Express from Barking, I started when they were down River Road next to Deanes, then they moved round the corner into Thames Road opposite Wilkinsons (LEX).
A few Seabourne drivers had done the rounds, some came from SCA, and Monks (MIT), where are they all now? Fred Bown, Tom Brown, Peter (Norweigen Jack) Fricker, Alan Smart, Charlie, Alan Stroud, Brian (Yogi)Levitt, and a load more all decent blokes to work with!
On my first trip over the water in 1975 at a very naive 22 years old all of the Seabourne lads looked out for the rookies, even as a subbie they made sure I knew what T forms, Carnets and transit forms to get stamped, does it still happen or is it every man for himself?

As a teenager I worked in the holidays for a fruit and veg wholesaler, we took veg from Bedfordshire into Covent Garden and brought fruit back, we parked in Endall St. not far from Pouparts and it was my job to load the fruit as the barrow boys threw it at me, and tried their hardest to bury me under New Zealand apples or Jaffa oranges or tomato boats…ring any bells with anyone?.. I still have the bruises!

thought my eye site had gone all together, was sure that pic was a leyland , any one remember leadhams ?

the firm i used to work for had its head offices in croydon the firm was called london carriers they had depot in sywell Heywood and Hamilton the trucks where silver with a blue strip

Are you sure about the colour. When I worked for London Carriers, they were green. They were owned by Philips electrical, and ran out of what was called ‘the croydon unit.’

I worked for London Carriers out of Croydon,Beddington Farm Road,in '69/'70., doing the 80:2:20 run.Cambridge,Potters Bar,on permanent nights.I alternated between a Guy Invincible and an Albion 4 wheeler.Occasionally I did the Sywell run with a Guy Big J and drawbar trailer(which had a dolly under it) so they could split it for deliveries.A mate of mine one Alan ■■■■■■ also worked there. They were indeed green with white signwriting but later, after I had left the paint job did change to grey with the blue stripe along the side. The depot has gone now, replaced by Comet and various other factory units. It wasn’t the best job but at the time it paid the rent.Hope this info is useful, regards to all,900X20.

Hi Peterm, I will alway’s remember London Carrier’s having smart green motor’s in the 70’s and the 80’s and you saw them all over the country. My mate John took this photo when he did a bit for them which I think was in the 90’s.
I prefered the green livery myself.

Go The Bronco’s  .

what do these numbers signify,80:2:20 are they just depot numbers ?

Hello all,
I was wrong,it was the 8:2:20.It was the code for that run .There were a lot of different runs mainly Depot changeovers i.e. Sywell,Southampton and more.I cannot remember them all.The colour scheme changed after I left - the photo is correct.Hope this is is of some help,900X20.

yes you are right they did run in green i think my dad still as a photo of him and me when i was a baby. they did run in sliver and blue then in the late 90s early 2000 they went to wight
