anyone remember gilyott & scott used to have a yard on sutton fields were mc brides aerosol site is now.
use to run light green scania 110s finished in the late 70s to early 80s i believe. anyone got any pics of them
or ex drivers out there. regards johny rose63.

Gilyott & Scott had the warehouse at the side of Mayphil Cafe as well John. It was Econofreight, Yorkshire Storage and eventually became TDG.

Your man baldrick worked for them for a while.

Gilyotts were a shipbroker who teamed up with Scotts and became Gilyott and Scott (Transport) Ltd They eventually sold the barges to Dave Hornshaw from Goole (Remember them John) Mustard coloured Volvos who worked for IFF iirc

They finished in 1974 and the manager who ran it had a string of failed business behind him, including Link Transport

I remember G & S When I worked for F.Short & Sons Ltd they had a depot in Oxford Street in Hull. opposite Drapers Shell Filling Station, Short used to get a bit of work from them in the 60/70s, I have asked on this thread a few times if there is still some of Shorts Hull drivers still about, But no

replys up to now, Regards Larry.

Key Warehousing and Transport has already had a mention within this thread.

Excellent thread lads ! Really enjoyed trawling through the pictures and stories about Hull transport era ! As i used to tip and backload out of Hull on a regular basis, used to tip at the royal ordanance, and have backloaded out of Mayers on the dock,TDG,Ideal standard, MBM timber to name a few… And can remember most of the companies mentioned…

Cheers lads

Here are a few oddments from an old mate Dave (Deano) Dean who lived in Hull before moving to civilisation

There has been a few mentions of Chapman Sheilds throughout this thread.

Bob Bradshaw was known as Early Riser and had it painted on his new fridge.

I didn’t know him, but remember one of his trucks, I was 17 at the time (1974) and working at Associated Fisheries in Brighton Street, and in came this brand new F88 with fridge trailer, with Early Riser written down the sides, liked the look of it then, and probably would now, does anyone have any fotos of this truck, would be much appreciated,

Ron

I haven’t got one of the fridge which is a great pity, but this is the F88 straight out of the paint shop. If i remember correctly, the lines continued along the fridge and then went up at a steep angle at the rear and it had Early Riser written on the panels.

It is, just the bucket handle obscuring it.

I am trying to find a piece of history from Crossroads Commercials in Hull, so far the website has given me the info that Valletta Street opened in 1972 and an old family friend, Ray Alison from Melton who previously ran his own vehicles and an auto-electrical business became an Electrician with Crossroads. Through him and the sales manager we used to get an invite whenever they opened a box, or a new model was launched and I can remember the line up of new Globetrotters, most of them for Brian Yeardley who was still based in Hull.

The local haulers were forever being whisked off on a Jolly to Gothenburg to drive these new wonder trucks and Volvo had a good customer base around the area.

I have emailed Crossroads to see if there are any photographs of the Hull operation or of the launch of various models through the years, the place still stands and has hardly altered from those days. There is still a lovely old F12 Globetrotter running on Middlegate which is ex Brian Yeardley

These were the Brian Yeardley lorries that JJ72 mentioned in another thread. They were registered A541 OAT through to A546 OAT

I have had several replies to this request from Crossroads Commercials managers & staff old and new, some great information and memories. I am hoping to be able to share some of this in the near future. I don’t want to bite the hand that feeds me though.

Crossroads have opened a facebook page and there are some photos of the open day when they became a VOSA ATF

I have since discovered a bit more about the formation of the Crossroads group. Ray Alison was one of the gentleman who owned the workshops before Crossroads took the Valletta Street depot over in 1972, Ray carried on for a short time afterwards, the company was called AJH Commercials which stood for Alison Johnson and Hobman. Does anyone remember any more of them?
