Old Hull Haulage companys

Looked the match date up, I think the crash at Ottringham was 2nd May 1980…

In the 70’s we also had a car club in Hull and we were part responsible for getting a load of trucks together at Melbourne near Pocklington for truck drag races. Anyone interested I got some pics of those days too and also pics of most of the fire engines that have served in the area since the 60’s, just let me know, enjoy!

Glenn R:

Hi Glenn,

Welcome to the site, What happened to Chapman Shields? where they bought out by someone else?

The photos are great

Bulk Storage (Transport) Limited

S80 Foden, what were those headlights about? I beleive that Chapman-Shields just dissolved into nothing a while after Bill got killed…

I just remembered they bought a second had 6 wheeler Leyland just before I left maybe it used to belong to Nellist fruit? I know Brian from Nellist came to drive for us, he had a logo on his truck ‘Five Boys’ with the names of his sons on it.

They also got a second MAN LAT 492P same spec as the one in the photo’s. After I left they got a second hand ERF (so they must have been going bust!!) with a sleeper cab.

Chapman- Shields started container storage in my latter years, storing and repairing Russian Morflot boxes, some of the firms that used to come in to load were, Fred Gathercole, Cockerill’s of York, a Liverpool firm who’s name escapes me, John Scholey, Hammond Emmes.

Here’s some pictures of the truck racing at Melbourne near Pocklington back in 1978.

Sorry, I’ve not got any Hammond Emmes ones but I bet your grandad used to come into our yard to pick containers up, what’s the name?

Ken Downs, He also drove for Robertson Dale and IJ Blakey Haulage

Do you remember where Hammond Emmes where based? :grimacing:

Hi jon,

Fairly certain Hammond Emmes where on Scott Street just down the road from where maizcor mill stands now but on the other side of the street

Not much down Scott Street, Wincolmlee or Lime Street did “look” big enough for artics, it was a scary prospect the first time I had to load in Chambers and Fargus and was helped out by a Van Den Bosch driver in about 1981

CALLING ERIC HOLLAND!! I recently got an e mail frfom an old Chapman Shields work colleague, Eric Holland - probably through his son. I opened it and then lost it (an age thing I think!) if anyone out there can contact the above and pass on my details I would really appreciate it. It’s ok to contact me on glennram@glennram.karoo.co.uk - thanks.

Hello all. I’ve seen the name Jim O’Keefe on a couple of posts. He was at AS Haulage along with Bill Fraser n Andy Tucker. They done a management buy out. I worked for them from 2004-2009 when they folded up, I moved back down to Bristol but as far as I know KnJ Logistics took over the yard and Jim was running it, he got the push and the last I heard Jim was working for ravenscroft which was started by chris Wilson an ex AS driver.

Who where the main international hauliers in Hull? i only remember Brian Yeardley ,Mat and Huttons

Brittania Freight have a depot in hull, but they no longer do any european work. They now pull Smeet’s trailers and do some container work from immingham and Hull docks. I retired from Brittania at the age of 68,i thought i had done enough. I spent most of my driving career working for a one transport out of leeds, doing european work for them. Regards. (Alan Bennett) :grimacing:

Panalpina were on the boat every week with Neill and Brown, Hull Ships Stores, Wake Brothers. ETA Brooksbanks and recently mentioned was Brekkes. There were a couple of caravan transport companies too, one was RCT who I had the pleasure of working for.

Hullo,
I used to sub a bit of work from Alf Battams when he was in Oxford Street, that was in about '73,/'74. Then I think he moved over to Hedon Road, just before Haller Street, near to the Sportsman.
Cheers, Archie.
