Old Hull Haulage companys

HI all,
How the memorys have come flooding back seeing all those pics and company names from Hull.
But one not named was the Dutch company GELDERS who had a depot in Dairycoates Hessle road. My father drove for them when they started in Hull in the 70’s right through to the 90’s by this time they had morphed to become IPEC and then into the mighty TNT and he and the rest of the family where all down in Northampton. He then went back to Hull and drove for Willow transport my cousins outfit.
I followed my father and worked for a subbie called Ron Pattison from Knottingley on a Bedford TK out of Gelders before moving down to Northants and joining Gelders employment and spending many a trip poodling around Euroland.

By the way Graham wells of “Wells Cargo” (way back in thread) was an old pal old mine and now is a driving instructor.
Don’t know if any of you were on the net in the late 90’s when I set up and ran a site called truckersinfo.co.uk (don’t try it took it offline years ago.)
All the best

Hullo John,
Is Barry Wilson your cousin then?. I remember when he started that up in Hedon Road, about the early to mid 70’s. And Graham Wells I do remember. He had two very tidy TK Bedfords running Groupage bits for MAT. If you still see either of them, give them my regards please.
Cheers, Archie.

Yes Archie, Barry is my cousin after he sold up he moved down to Uppingham but after a couple of years he went back to live in Hull. I havn’t seen Graham for 30 years or more since moving away from the area but if i do will pass on your regards. John

To true, my old man reminded me of one of his many ex employers from the days when I was a toddler “Valley transport”

Hullo all,
Just a thought, but does anybody remember Ted Jarvis ? A real good bloke and a trier, the last I remember of him he opened a sort of clearing house, on Hedon Road, just as you came onto Hedon Road from the roundabout at Drypool Bridge, it was at the top of Strawberry St, and just over the road from the Monkey House.
Cheers, Archie.

one of the first Daf 2600’s in the UK

I think there have been photos of Gelders posted on TruckNet before and I am certain I have mentioned them. If I remember correctly it was a light (larkspur) blue and white livery they used. Were they the same Gelder that became IPEC. I am still looking for pictures of Jac W Herreveld. I remember Thompsons of Beverley had photos of both companies on the walls. Arnold Worrall was a close friend and was keeper of the pictures I think.

I remember a Pattison but not Ron, Did he have a son? he dropped a loaded trailer in Wembley Cafe at Newport and me as a 15 year old lad was dispatched with jacks, blocks of wood and a spare landing leg in Bill Malcolmson’s land-rover to help the embarrassed driver out.

I used the pub & cafe opposite Ted Jarvis office many times

Hullo Malc,
Maybe the Pattison you have in mind is Roger Pattison, from Market Weighton. Although I don’t recall him having Artics, only a couple of four wheelers. Gelders as you said were blue and white, their main sub contractor at the time was Alf Wilkinson, from Holme on Spalding Moor, also blue and white. p.s. Driving Bill Malcies land Rover at 15 ?, you should be ashamed of yourself
Cheers, Archie.

No it wasnt Roger Pattison although I do know of him. This Pattison bloke lived on the Snaith road at Gowdall.

(EDIT) I just remembered he was a very good piano player and did a turn around the local pubs and clubs

Driving Malcies landrover at 15 was nothing. I had been shunting from the Black Hut to Finnanglia or 19 shed since I was 12, and that was in an F86

Here’s three photos of Fred Cook vehicles,a Hull haulier, the last photo shows a Proctor in BRS times.

Chris Webb:
I remember John Foremans when they were running out of BP at Saltend,F86s I think and I was in an AEC MK3 or a MK5 if you were lucky.
I worked for A.E.Evans Sheffield depot and we had a Hull based driver called Kenny Vint working out of BP and Amoco at Easington North Sea Gas terminals. He had an accident somewhere near Patrington, the Mandator and 6000 galls of gas condensate overturned, caught fire, killing Ken.I’d left Evans then but I think it was around 1979/80 when this happened. An old pal of mine,ex Evans, sent me these photos of the AEC and trailer when it was in Foremans’ yard.

It was on this bend where the wagon went over. That’s my mates’ Buffalo in the lay-by and the wagon finished up in that field.

Kenny drove for another company out of Saltend before he worked for Evans, maybe Harold Wood,I’m not sure.He was a great bloke and was sadly missed by the lads that knew him.I do recall he was ex Royal Navy or Merchant Navy as he used to take the p*** out of me,being ex RAF  .

After this incident BP built a pipeline

Hiya, I’m new on here ans used to work in road haulage in Hull from 1972. I’ve got a fair few pictures and some very clear memories of those times if anyone is still interested in the old Hull subject? Here’s a taster, it would be interesting to hear from anyone that wants more pictures etc, cheers

Don’t be teasing, let’s have the photos posted, I’m sure they’ll generate loads of intrest from the Hullies on here

There’s also been a thread on here about the tragic crash at Ottringham which involved the tanker. I had joined the fire brigade by then and although I can’t put an exact date on it off the top of my head, it was the Friday before Hull & Rovers playing at Wembley and was the day of the night when the fire officer Ian Cameron got killed on Beverley Road when the fire engine turned over.

If you look now there is still no bark on the trees where the tanker caught fire, the crash was instumental in a pipeline being put in rather than leading the hazardous stuff by road. Sorry to waffle…
