Hullo,
Probably the smartest lorries in the Area were ran by Peter Fletcher and his Brother ( I forget his name ) Followed I should say Terry Cawkwell who was at Newbald, as you can see from the photos posted previously, and Tom Fisher’s also at Newbald. None of these had all that old B*****ks on, they were just well kept and well maintained. What do you say Malc ?
Cheers, Archie.

Colin Fletcher was Peter’s brother, they also ran Farnborough transport that did animal feedstuffs out of fishers at Hutton Cranswick and kept a couple of motors parked up for the pea season.

Edwards was originally started in 1946 by Geoff Edwards who sold out to Ideal Standard and was run under the name of Edwards of Hull until about 1998 when they changed the name to Edwards Logistics.

IJ Blakey also had vehicles running as North Bridge Transport and Humber Bridge Transport

Correct spud my grandad drove one of North Bridges orange F86

Re Coxinental, at the time i was 10 so Roof racks, air horns and TIR plates meant everything lol

Hullo Spud,
Yes you are quite right Colin Fletcher, that was the other Brother. And yes that’s right also they were running some as Farnborough, they were four wheelers, mostly TM’s as I recall, and the Pea wagons used only in season running all hours into Bird’s Eye Foods. If you ever see Peter Fletcher give him my very best please.
Edwards were also very smart, that lovely livery of Biege and Brown, especially on those ergamatic cab Leylands looked fantastic, are they still operating? And Ian Blakey, the first bloke I ever pulled a load for, a really nice guy, but you could never say that his vehicles were ever tidy.
Good old times in Hull, those were the days eh?
Cheers, Archie.

My DAF still had the blue chassis with yellow hubs I think, the cab had been freshly blown over white by Thompson of Beverley. It came on a C plate and was a 2800ATi with the ZF box. I needed a 6 wheel unit and it was cheap.

I have to agree with Archie that Fisher ran some nice tidy tackle and Newbald was a beehive of small transport companies, bling has never interested me much, just a nice paint job that was kept clean.

Hullo Greyhound,
What a really smashing bloke Alf Battams was. When I first knew him and did a bit of work for him, he had a tiny lock up wharehouse on Hedon road, just before the Sportsman Pub. Later he moved to a larger place in ■■■■■■■■■■ Street, he did a lot at that time with Alec Sharples of Manchester and rented a bit of the storage space to him. It was all four wheeler work, I think he only ever hasd one Artic, that was a 1418 Mercedes. THey were really happy times.
Cheers, Archie.

SEG.

Administrative history:
Wholly owned subsidiary of Stewart, Esplen and Greenhough, a subsidiary of Rowntree Mackintosh.

hm-waterguard.org.uk/Bond%20 … 202002.pdf

Taken from the retired customs officers newsletter in the above link.

My wife, who at one time worked for Rowntree and Co. of York, recently dug out a copy of C. W. M., (“Cocoa Works Magazine”) dated spring 1969.
C.W.M. was Rowntree’s equivalent of “Portcullis”, bringing news of developments in the company, staff
appointments, retirements, and other appropriate information.
An interesting read in itself; but one item drew my attention, and may be of interest to others, so I reproduce
an extract.
" Raw materials from overseas are imported mainly through the ports of Hull and Liverpool where the
port stores of our subsidiary warehousing company, Stewart, Esplen and Greenhaugh Limited, are
used to regulate the flow direct to the factories…Imported raw materials have always flowed to the
chocolate factory at York from the deepwater port of Hull, by means of the river Ouse. Each year we
bring some 30 000 tons of raw materials through Hull, by means of the River Ouse… in the craft of
our lighterage company… Containerisation is occupying an increasing place in the export business.
For example, containers used in the transport of Kit Kat to the United States are packed in our York
factory, and unpacked in the U.S.A."
I am certain there will be one or two about who remember those days.
Below is reproduced a photograph accompanying the article, entitled “An S.E.G. vehicle collects a consignment
of goods from the Hull docks.” I wonder whether anyone might hazard a guess as to the
name (unknown) of the vessel in the background?

Thanks for the info Malc,I didn’t know SEG were RM’s warehousing department.
I don’t know if you’ve seen this, taken at Arrow Bulks yard about 1969.Evans used to clean out there and the MK3 in the photo, fleet 137,was my steed now and again  No,I didn’t whack the derv tank
You can see the “Brothers” bit on the back of the other motor.

Bloody hell, that wash bay was still like that when I started using it in 1979, there were many a driver got it wrong and ripped a mud flap off on that kerb. The drumming shed was opposite and I have spent many a happy hour in there with a load of linseed from Seatons.

I didn’t know Rowntrees owned SEG either as we used to do cocoa beans into Rowntrees, Terrys, and Needlers from Hull Docks

Might be wrong but i believe Arrow Bulk became Calor Transport.■■?

I am not sure about Arrow, Chris. The wash bay pictured became IBL and Calor at the time worked out of BP as well as spot hire. Ted, the guy on Formans wash with old Jack drove for Calor, then went to H&P before finishing off driving at John Dobsons on Nijman Zeetank.

BP had an identity crisis or rather the additive side did, with Adibis and Orobis liveries on tanks operated by Sutton, P&O LPG and many others I think. Some British Celanese lads had a steady number with one load a day Spondon - Saltend and back iirc

Did John (Stanfield) once post something about Arrow Bulk?

Archie Paice:

Wheel Nut:
I am a lot younger than you Archie but reading my post it makes me look senile. Sorry I confused things. Norman Lewis Tankers was and still is at Hensall near Selby. Dave White moved out that way and got remarried. My mate Danny went out with Pat Dale and I used to shoot at Cherry Burton Gun Club when Geoff Dale was involved.

Triangle Garage was dead opposite the yard which became Woodbrow Bulk Liquids. It was originally Dennis Standring before being taken over by Alan Jackson. The paint shop I worked at was opposite the Rose and Crown and Malcys yard was 800 yards towards Howden. Im not sure if we painted your Scania but we did do all the Atkinsons that Glen Holt bought and we also painted all the Mercedes that Triangle sold. This painting and commercial repair business was owned by the Richardsons who were involved in Caravan transport and bodybuilding.

I will go back to sleep again, it is great to exercise some brain matter though.

Hullo Wheelnut,
Thanks for that, I am obviously a little bit confused with my memory of that area, wasnt the Wembly Cafe, where when it shut Ken Mathews had his yard ? and are you certain that Bill Malcolmson didnt have a yard right on the juction, right on a large corner, where the old A road left the then not quite completed New Road , opposite Triangle. Getting a bit senile I think, as you say I`m an old bugger now.
Cheers Archie.

It has taken a long time coming but could the place you had your motor painted have been Paul Bayrams? He owned the yard opposite Triangle between Dennis Standring and Alan Jackson. Bill Malcolmsons wife was nee. Bayram, could that have been the link. I have found a bit of a timeline for the Hull area and it quite surprised me how quick time has gone.
