Lonewolf Yorks:
Interesting read through this lot but apart from LTC and Rice I hardly recognise a name
However noones mentioned a company we subbied for a few years since, Kingtree. They certainly had an office on Hedon Road there somewhere and we hauled timber for them off the docks, 3 tree trunks and that was it, 40 ton.
Only pic I gotā¦
Kingtree are in Newport now, on the site of the old Wembley Cafe which became Matthews / Barry Read, they are still regulars on the Portsmouth / Poole boats with cabins
Hi Malc, with you being The Oracle Of Hull can you help me with a couple of questions.
In the eighties were there two companies called Britannia ?. one I think was Britannia Removals and the other was a small clearing agent who we used to use on King George 5th Dock. I remember the guy was called Bill and seemed a really good lad and I have a feeling that he bought a Scania later on and used the name Britannia Freight.
At the time we used to backload tractors in Transylvania for either North Cave or South Cave and deliver then to what looked like an old small ex army camp, it could of been an ex amunition store or something like that.
I am not sure if I have asked you this before but does anybody recall anything about these things.
Hi Steve, there was a Scania with Britannia Freight livery running to Italy in the eighties, if my memory is correct they used to run magazines back to UK.

There is a removal company Britannia Appleyards who are still running and took my stuff out to Africa in a container, the other company was Britannia Freight Services as you say from Alexandra dock in Hull, it was owned by a bloke called Sellers, maybe still is according to the website. The tractors were going to a company called Universal Tractors which was run by an Irish bloke called Walter Graham. Before opening the new depot in South Cave they were at Slipper Bridge in Gilberdyke and Walter lodged at my Dads pub.
Not sure who she is, but certain she was never there or I would have been a trarctorr driver instead
I remember John Foremans when they were running out of BP at Saltend,F86s I think and I was in an AEC MK3 or a MK5 if you were lucky.
I worked for A.E.Evans Sheffield depot and we had a Hull based driver called Kenny Vint working out of BP and Amoco at Easington North Sea Gas terminals. He had an accident somewhere near Patrington, the Mandator and 6000 galls of gas condensate overturned, caught fire, killing Ken.Iād left Evans then but I think it was around 1979/80 when this happened. An old pal of mine,ex Evans, sent me these photos of the AEC and trailer when it was in Foremansā yard.
It was on this bend where the wagon went over.Thatās my matesā Buffalo in the lay-by and the wagon finished up in that field.
Kenny drove for another company out of Saltend before he worked for Evans, maybe Harold Wood,Iām not sure.He was a great bloke and was sadly missed by the lads that knew him.I do recall he was ex Royal Navy or Merchant Navy as he used to take the p*** out of me,being ex RAF .
Wheel Nut:
It was a bad road to Easington once you passed Saltend towards Hedon Chris. Still is really, not a lot of chance to overtake.
Arrow Bulk were quite big in BP and Orobis before becoming Adibis
It may have been Arrow Bulk he worked for Malc, not out of Saltend or it could have been Bulk from Paull who did work out of there.
Yes,it was a bad road and especially so in winter. We worked nights occasionally on that job and of course it was wintertime when most gas was being used so Iāve had some backend twitching experiences.Amoco had a proper covered gantry, load yourself,24/7,in and out in 3/4 hour.BP was a 90 minute loading job,0800-1600 and no shelter so you being an East Coast lad will know what I mean.
Going back to that accident,I never did find out what exactly caused the motor to go over,Kenny was a good driver and there was never any rush on that job which was to Immingham Storage or the NCB refinery at Wath on Dearne.Even my old pal who sent the pics is a bit hazy about the incident.
This is a photo of BP Easington in the 70s,my mate just finished loading. His Mandator was YWW 983G,ex LPG Morley - remember them?
Went in the Earl de Grey with Ken once,is it still open?
Thanks for the info Malc .
Was there a King George 5th Dock in Hull or am I getting mixed up with the docks in London .
Universal Tractors was the place in South Cave where we tipped we used to bring seven tractors in on a 40ft tilt.
The wheels were removed and loaded against the headboard, the rest of the tractor was on a wooden frame at a forty five degree angle so that you could get seven on side by side. All the electrical parts were fitted at South Cave I.I.R.C., we also used to backload Roman Diesel parts from Brasov and deliver them to a place just outside Zeebrugge.

Hereās a question for you old 'uns - does anybody remember a haulier called Fred Cook, based in Hull in pre- BRS days? (And maybe after). He had a Proctor (HVF 919), a Foden DG 8-legger (HKH 952) and a Maudslay Maharanee tractor with a Scammell bow-front trailer, (JKH 102), amongst others. The address on the cab doors was Pickering Road and the registered office was at 45, Bromley Street. The big question is - What colour were theyā ā ? Iāve already built models of the Proctor and Maudslay, and need this info to finish them. Can anybody help?
I remeber Blackeys having the longest non trombone trailer in the east riding. And the ten bob a tone roundabout is known by everyone who ran into Hull. I worked for Mat transport and ran out of MIFT in Manchester but spent a lot of time in Hull. We used to have our motors serviced on nights and used to stop in digs run by Archie Pace, I saw him on here last week. Hull was alive with hauliers back then and the fish trade was just in decline. I worked for Mat for 13 years and still have great memories of nights out in Hull going to Rayners, the Monkey bar and the Earl-de-Gray.

Falkingham rings a bell were they Light Blue and part Dark Blue.was that what Hull & Glasgow became.
It was the same company, Transport House. James Reckitt Avenue.
Falkys were dark blue and maybe red bits.
Just remembered Wilkinson Transport in Thomas Boags yard when you mentioned light blue
Saw Wilkinson Brothers and suddenly remembered the āexposeā on TV , IIRC It was Tankerās carrying Hazardous cargoes in tankers think it was for Huktra ?
The filmers obviously dramatised it as they do, but it portrayed to the public that Acid was being carried around in Plastic Buckets.
There were some safety issues that were worrying and I think this brought the demise of the brothers ( stand to be corrected )
Can You guys remember the programme probarbly 15 years or more ago
