Old Hull Haulage companys

Ken Matthews did buy the Wembley cafe and built up his haulage firm in there, he originally had one truck when he started from Newbald, A TK Bedford I think, then he too bought a new Mercedes from Triangle.

Bill and Alan Malcolmson only had that one haulage yard for W & A Malcolmson Transport and HCA. Before that they were double shifting one vehicle from their Mothers house near Eastrington. They did split the businesses later on and Bill kept the trucks and Alan sold tyres.

My mind is all over today. I just remembered another North Newbald haulier who you may remember. Rowley Adamson who ran a Leyland Mastiff

Hullo Wheelnut,
My apologies, I was sure I had my facts right, it just goes how to show how wrong you can be eh ? Time plays funny tricks on us all. No I don`t recall Rowley Adamson, not at the moment anyway.

Hullo again,
I have just had a thought, when I was subbing for MAT Transport, there was a chap called Graham Wells also doing work for them out of TEPS with a couple of TK Bedfords, they were really posh looking Dark Blue with large Gold and Red lettering WELLS CARGO.

I remember beardy Graham Wells, he had his father in law driving the 10 ton tk and rolled it or crashed it on the sth cave slip road just off the A63.
I can also recall running ouT of MAT & TEPS a father and son outfit called edmunds or edmonds haulage they ran 2 very smart little 7.5. tonners mercs with sleeper cabs

Hullo dm46,
I thought it was Grahams, brother in law that drove the larger tk, whatever happened to them do you know? The only father and son that wre in MAT,s yard in my time there, were Old man Kirk and his son Arthur Kirk, the old man was a butcher, sold the shop at the top of National Avenue and bought two brand new Scania 111,s. They were bright blue with A.G.Kirk in gold on the doors. Another Hull haulier we,ve all forgotten is Ted Jarvis, good old Ted, he tried so hard.
Cheers, Archie.

What about wakes,scanias.

Hi Archie.
You are correct, it was his brother in law, don’t know what I was thinking. I can vaguely remember Arthur Kirk. I can also remember Jarvis freight from the top of Hedon rd. Can you recall Stormet Ltd, they had a couple of 7.5 tonners working out of mat / teps I know the son was Keith but cant remember his dads name they also had a yard / storage off Bontoft Ave in Hull

What about ‘Petunia Haulage’ doe’s anybody remember them?
I know they were around from 1970-72 because of an incident that happened to one of their lorries when it was on an overnight stop in Oldham in 71. In the summer of 70 I started my first job in a traffic office for a general haulage co; ‘Thomas Harrison & Sons’ of Chadderton (Oldham) and their yard was just alongside the A62 part of the Hull to Manchester & Liverpool trunk route and we used to backload quite a few of the Hull lads and sometimes they would drop in the yard for diesel or pick up, drop off invoices, ropes, chains, sheets that might have been borrowed or lent between Harrisons and some of the Co’s;

This was obviously before the M62 had fully opened and Oldham still had a big lorry park right in the town centre and it was always full and was well known for a great night out.    Anyway this day a regular Petunia driver came into the Harrison yard late in the afternoon, after we had given him a backload of tin plate out of Manchester/Salford docks, to get some diesel and then off he went for his night out in Oldham. Next morning the old bill were at the Harrison yard as the load had been nicked, estimated value £30,000. considered a fair amount in those days. The driver had been arrested and was believed to have been in on the theft :open_mouth: In our traffic office this wasn’t really taken seriously at the time as this lad was a regular in our place and was well thought of and just didn’t seem the type to be mixed up with lorry/load theft. But as the enquiries proceeded it turned out that he was actually involved and had thrown his hands in to his part and IIRC it wasn’t the first time it had happened :open_mouth: Think he got three years and don’t seem to remember much of Petunia after that. :exclamation:
This incident is the only reason the name ‘Petunia Haulage’ sticks in my head and as it was long time ago I can’t remember names or anything like that
Hope this adds to the Hull thread
Regards
Dave Penn;

Petunia were at Woodmansea, they were nurserymen and growers who diversified into transport. It was known as Petunia Group latterly but I believe it has gone back to just greenhouses.

They were at Woodmansea just down the road from the old Wiles Fertiliser Works

Thanks Wheel Nut, I was only 16/17 at the time and the greeting ‘Hello Petunia Haulage/Transport’ always used to always make me laugh when I rang them to say we had just given 1 or 2 of their lads backloads and they were in the yard at the moment getting a drop of diesel of us and were on their way home. Don’t know why it just did

Dont think so m8

Apparently Robertson Dale Haulage was named after 2 Film stars from the olden days

Wish someone had some pictures :frowning:

Here you are I stole it from the Bubbleman, I am sure he won’t mind.

Associated Humber Line became North Sea Ferries which became P&O

Here you are Malc,Dale Robertson, born 1923,made a lot of Westerns and still alive.I remember him but never saw him driving in Hull or parking up at the Woodside.

Thanks Chris.

According to Wikipedia

Dayle Lamoine Robertson was born in Harrah in 1923

Bloody hell, we will be having modern haulage companies named Enrique Arreola Haulage or Dan Ackroyd Logistics :stuck_out_tongue:

Wheel Nut:
Bob Bradshaw was known as Early Riser and had it painted on his new fridge.

I didn’t know him, but remember one of his trucks, I was 17 at the time (1974) and working at Associated Fisheries in Brighton Street, and in came this brand new F88 with fridge trailer, with Early Riser written down the sides, liked the look of it then, and probably would now, does anyone have any fotos of this truck, would be much appreciated,

Ron

Interesting read through this lot but apart from LTC and Rice I hardly recognise a name :open_mouth:

However noones mentioned a company we subbied for a few years since, Kingtree. They certainly had an office on Hedon Road there somewhere and we hauled timber for them off the docks, 3 tree trunks and that was it, 40 ton.

Only pic I got…
