We have done the Cafe thing elswehere but the cafe’s where Wheelnut expanded his stomach on the A63 were Woodside, near Goole /Rawcliffe then to Mayphil at Boothferry bridge, this one looked more like a 1950’s holiday camp. Closer to Hull was Normans Cafe and Swifts near Eastrington and then Wembley Cafe in Newport close to the old BP/Mercedes Benz garage.
It sounds like the Woodside Cafe that mushroomman remembers

Apparently Robertson Dale Haulage was named after 2 Film stars from the olden days
Wish someone had some pictures
Going back to the days of black and white T.V. on bakelite T.V. set’s there was a guy called Dale Robertson who starred in I.I.R.C. Wagon Train and Wells Fargo.
Maybe I should nominate him on " Who Is The Oldest Driver " thread as he was still wagon driving about three month’s ago on Fox Classic’s on satellite T.V.
Chris Webb:
I remember Reader Bros well. They used to pull Dutch trailers off the dock and drop them in Humber Street (I think) loaded with lettuce and I used to go and load my wagon when I worked out of Sheffield market in the late 60s.
Here’s the best i can do for a picture of an old Readers truck.
Taken on King Edward Street Hull in 1963 hes just coming into the picture from the left

Some good pictures of Hull Corporation trolley buses too Moomoo. the front one with the ROSS Fish advert.
Any more of Hull Hauliers?

You must have an encyclopedia of owd Hull hauliers.
Why couldn’t I remember The Eclipse Motor Transport Company,Ferndale Transport and Willow Transport?
The Woodside’s getting full now Malc!
But you don’t recall Thompsons of Hedon - livestock carriers? Their yard was past BP further up on the left where you turned off for Hedon village - I think
Ran a lot of Leyland/AEC motors, brown livery and I think a couple of drawbar outfits.
they are now KLMS winter
they still do livestock and was a coal merchents until a couple of years ago
Cheers DeanO. I did think KL & S Winter were who Chris was thinking of, but I do have a clouded vision of Thompsons of Hedon. I just can’t remember them or the trucks.
Hedon had a few companies running out of there but never as many as North Newbald. There were something like 70 trucks pulling out of there on a Monday morning, there were only about 50 people lived there
A couple of other companies who came to mind recently were Sid Howard who ran out of Capper Pass at Melton,
Ray Allison who was in Welton, Ray retired from haulage when times were hard
and then he got a job as an electrician at Crossroads Volvo. I wonder what he would think today, as he thought he got out when things were bad.
Hullo Wheelnut,
Youre certainly right about the ammount of trucks coming out of North Newbald each day. Do you remember though that they were all the nicest turned out vehicles you ever saw, Albert Fishers in that beautiful Pale Blue and Grey, from that farm just past Newbold on the Marker Weighton road, then there was Johnsons, with the first two 140 Scanias that I remember seeing, they were Pale Blue with Johnson in large red lettering on the sides, Glasgow and back each night, and over the old A66 at that. Then of course Tery Cawkwell, LTC, in that very distinctive White and Yellow with Red lettering. Then just up the road not far before the old twisty railway bridge was old man Hydes
wagon parked outside his house each night. There were I think also more O/D`s in the hull area than anywhere else. And me in my old TK or my single cab Scania 110
Hullo again,
I have just had a thought, when I was subbing for MAT Transport, there was a chap called Graham Wells also doing work for them out of TEPS with a couple of TK Bedfords, they were really posh looking Dark Blue with large Gold and Red lettering WELLS CARGO.

Fishers is still going Archie, still a tidy fleet too.
Terry Cawkwell LTC was named because of his wife. Lorraine. It stands for Lorraine and Terry Cawkwell but was regularly altered to Leveritts Travelling Circus as that was her maiden name I believe
Len and Ted Bayram also ran 2 companies from North Newbald, the haulage and the timber.
In fact most of the hauliers were related, not just because it was a small village but just that there were some large families having ties to the local transport industry.

many people may have seen the white FH powder tankers operated by Simon Gibson who also hails from Newbald.
Other local hauliers were John Thompson from Sancton and Ernest Waudby in North Cave who ran a Scania Vabis and a 140 before the 141.
Just down the road was South Cave and Cleminshaws Transport (Transportkunst) and Sid Howard (Cappers).
Another name to tempt you with, did you have any dealings with Miss Forbes

Hullo again Wheelnut,
I thought Terry`s missus was Levinia, still as you say it was a combination of his and hers. SHIELA FORBES eh ? A most formidable woman. She lived exactly opposite the LTC yard. I used to get the Scania serviced in there by a moonlighting MAT Fitter, I came out rather late one night from a Service, it was snowing, I had to swing wide as I came out of the Yard and on turning to go up the road my offside rear wheel was in the gutter, on the snow and slush and slight gradient I got stuck, diff lock, no difference, just spinning. I eventually after chucking some sand and gravel down got moving. The next week I got a summons, SHE had got out of bed clocked me, got back into bed and then did me. Do I remember SHIELA FORBES ■■
Cheers, Archie.
Hullo Wheelnut,
Do you remember the Town Copper in Beverley in the late 50s early 60
s with the big handlebar moustash ? Bill Rice, his son started off with a small wagon in about i963 if I recall a TK. Look at him now, you see him here, you see him there , you see him averywhere. Nigel Rice.
Cheers, Archie
I wasn’t 100% on the Lorraine / Levinia name. It was also Levitt as I was mistaken and mixed up with Levericks. but it reminded me of Liz Levitt who also has a couple of trucks running from North Newbald.
I didn’t know Bill Rice, probably before my time. But Bill Draper was a copper who turned into a haulage contractor.
I’m interested in the moonlighting MAT Fitter, was that Dave Clark from Northern Commercials?
I worked for Mac Bulliment and he used to make fun of Miss Forbes, I think he went to Market Weighton school with her
He was still frightened when she came in the yard though
Hullo again Wheelnut,
I remember Bill Draper he used to live in the last terrace in Marfleet lane, just before the lights. I never knew he was a copper though, I should have thought he was too short to be a copper, maybe he was a halfpenny, live and learn eh? There was though an ex copper that ran a couple of trucks although I dont know his name. I do know that Graham McNiel from MAT passed his HGV with this bloke though. The only time I ever met Matt was years ago, I can
t remember exactly when it was, I went down to his place ( on an old railway line I think ) to look over a Marathon that he had for sale, I never bought it though. And Liz Levitt, thats a name from the past is
nt it. The fitter was a bloke that worked for Dave Clark at MAT, Johnny Hutchinson, a big friend of Johnny Mann, you must know Manny, still going strong and back and forwards to Italy each week for that Firm on George Dock the name escapes me at the moment, no Ive got it Neale & Brown. John Hutchinson I believe went on to opening his own Workshop´at Holme on Spalding Moor. Another thing I see earlier that you lived at Slipper Bridge, who was the Dutchman up that way that ran some really nice motors ? a Nurseryman, bulbs and all that sort of stuff, I think maybe Bob Bradshaw did some work for him, I
m not too sure though. We must have been in Hull at about the same time.
Cheers, Archie.

Bloody hell Archie. John Hutchie was the man in Holme. I know John Mann and he is still doing Italy for N&B.
There were a couple of driver trainers. Don Thompson who bought Huon Haulage and Richardsons. then there was Steve Ropers dad who ran Greenwood Transport and Training.
As for the Dutchman there were several. Bob Bradshaw was known as Early Riser and had it painted on his new fridge. Does Cor Van Dijk ring a bell as Ken Matthews grew with him. I lived at the pub at slipper bridge that was eventually sold and the business opposite was taken on by Peter Hutchinson, M R Bullliment had a spell there too.
We must have crossed paths in the past, my transport upbringing was through Bill and Alan Malcolmson, Glen Holt and Alan Jackson who had done there time with J B Kay, Standrings and J A Holt

Hullo again Wheelnut,
Bloody hell is right, a small world eh ? Ive seen Manny a few times on the Ferry in the past few years, a real top bloke, I
ve known him for 36 or 37 years now. I dont know if Hutchie still has the spot at H.O.S., as I
ve not been there for a many years. I know the name Don Thompson but cant put a face to it, but Greendale Training, that was partly owned by Geoff Dale (Dale Foods) and Brian Greenwood, I took my training with Brian just after I had left the Sea, and just after he started up. Bob Bradshaw I saw last Summer in Bradford at Redheads, when I was doing my usual bit of driving work. The first Scania that I bought, a 110 super I bought from that truck sales that was at the junction on the A63 at South Cave, it belonged to a chap, I forget his name but he traded as North Sea Trailers, and possibly was or did work for Welton Transport I had it painted just over the road at Bill Malcomsons. I dont know Ken Mathews or Peter Hutchinson, at least I don
t think I do. I do remember Ken Mathews opening his yard, at the old Wembly Cafe though. The last time I was in the Rose and Crown was about seven or eight years ago, I had parked just along the road towards Howden in that lay by, I was doing a bit for G.E. Smith of Malton and I was meeting a friend. We went along to the Pub for a meal. I remember just over the road were two rather weather beaten dodgy looking old wagons, If I remember right one was a Transcon, I walked over to have a look and speak to one of the drivers who was still there, he was a right miserable bugger, I wished I hadnt bothered. There was also a guy in that area called Dave White he was a big friend of Dave Clarks
he drove a really top class Scania for Norman Lewis. He was a nice bloke too, unlike Clarky who was a Prat.
Cheers, Archie.

Thats right, Edwards was originally Ideal Standards in house haulier, then it went into “Logistics” and is now owned by a certain Mr Betz.
quote]
Of course I stand to be corrected Malc, but as far as I remember,Betz only took over the Genk operation of Edwards Logistics, the UK side stayed the same.
Betz did indeed take over most of the work that was done by Genk, all the good Ideal Standard jobs we had to Italy,Spain and southern France are now done by Czech’s,Bulgarians and Poles.
They even took over most of the automotive work too,in fact I think there’s only a handful of Belgian trucks in Genk now.
Edwards is indeed part of the huge American Standard Group, which includes Ideal Standard,Armitage Shanks,Trane and WABCO.
I’d be very interested if anyone had some old Edwards pics they could put up.
I remember a bloke called Daniels who did Ideal Standard work Keith, maybe he took on the rest of the work.
Hullo Wheelnut,
Sorry but I never saw your last message. When I knew Brian Greenwood he had not long before that been diagnosed with heart trouble, so had to come off of the road, he was a little bit later though able to open his Driving School, I am not very sure how Geof Dale became involved, as his business was Dale Foods, also The Hull Cartridge Company. Brian had a Green TK Bedford with a 30ft, traler at the school and ran it fron the old Victoria Docks, this was in 1972.
I still cant think of the bloke that had my Scania before me, Bob something or other maybe, he may even have been Dutch, but I do remember then that he would have been about 60
ish, I know he bought a new Mercedes 1926 from Triangle, thats how I came to buy the Scania, it was his part ex, for the Merc. I did
nt realise that Bill Malcolmson had another place up the road, I thought it had been painted in his haulage yard. Yes you might have rubbed it down for me, who knows. The Colour that I had it painted was, White with an Orange roof, wings and bumper. Black Grill. Signwritten on the doors with my name in Pale Blue, Black edging, phone numbers and address also in black. Sounds a bit flash I know, but it was really pretty, looked the dogs b…ks. That was I believe 1972/73.
I never knew Norman Lewis had a yard there, in those days he was somewhere over in the West Riding, Dewsbury? maybe. Dave White used to keep the Scania at home, that was a really beautiful truck. Are you still on the road yourself? I still do a bit myself when I am home in the UK in Summer, I am 71 now nearly 72. I do a bit for either YDL (Yorkshire Distribution Ltd) or Ward Bros, Dennis Bros or G E Smith. All in the Pickering or Malton Area.
Cheers, Archie.
I am a lot younger than you Archie but reading my post it makes me look senile. Sorry I confused things. Norman Lewis Tankers was and still is at Hensall near Selby. Dave White moved out that way and got remarried. My mate Danny went out with Pat Dale and I used to shoot at Cherry Burton Gun Club when Geoff Dale was involved.
Triangle Garage was dead opposite the yard which became Woodbrow Bulk Liquids. It was originally Dennis Standring before being taken over by Alan Jackson. The paint shop I worked at was opposite the Rose and Crown and Malcys yard was 800 yards towards Howden. Im not sure if we painted your Scania but we did do all the Atkinsons that Glen Holt bought and we also painted all the Mercedes that Triangle sold. This painting and commercial repair business was owned by the Richardsons who were involved in Caravan transport and bodybuilding.
I will go back to sleep again, it is great to exercise some brain matter though.

Hullo Wheelnut,
Thanks for that, I am obviously a little bit confused with my memory of that area, wasnt the Wembly Cafe, where when it shut Ken Mathews had his yard ? and are you certain that Bill Malcolmson did
nt have a yard right on the juction, right on a large corner, where the old A road left the then not quite completed New Road , opposite Triangle. Getting a bit senile I think, as you say I`m an old bugger now.
Cheers Archie.
