Old Firms in Oxford Area

I remember that daf 2100 but not the cruiser , didnt they run roadtrains as well ?

No roadtrains! The cruisers were all day cabs except a couple of sleepers.
These are the days when BRS took over the running of Alcan Transport.
Prior to that Alcan ran some loveley Scania 112’s I think they were supplied by salford van hire !

I can remember when they ran AEC’s

Were the cruisers not a bit gutless for curtainsider trailers ? , infact 2100 were a bit gutless as well .

NAP Transports’ new lorry, Renault Kerax which has impressed so I’ve been told.

That nearside cab panel is a rare old shape en’it! I can see the point of all the glass, but is that middle bit to accommodate the door latch? only seems a bit over engineered.

I’m with you on that one BigG, I can see the sence behind it for all round visibility, especially on building sites etc, but it must be like driving a greenhouse! not sure I’d like it. And thats a lot of glass to get cold in the winter, at 5 am you’d need a good heater to take the chill out of the cab, or is the rearmost glass panel double-glazed?

I seem to remember only being overtaken, can’t realy remember overtaking much !
Only realy had flats with the cruisers the tautliners didnt come till we got the 2100’s
Tautliners still better than roping and sheeting especially on a frosty morning !

I wouldn’t want that much glass in the door, given the amount of times branches have bent my passenger mirror round and when on the old 4000s, knocked off the beacons. the drivers’ dog likes it though! Driver told me it’s a little thirsty (probably down to using the hiab) but it’s been no trouble and great off-road.

A bit of a contrast to the trucks of today. This Morris Motors 1925 Leyland ran between Cowley and Coventry.

The Alcan motors jogged the grey cells again, back in the 60s giving an trucker mate(older) a lift when going north, he pointed out a collection of ramshackle wooden sheds in a field about 100yds off to right, Mollington area, with the story of the dummy “ally factory” which during WW2 was lit up while the “real factory” was blacked out and kept very busy with war effort. I googled and found this link which may be of interest.

I was thinking about that in the week Ed, then forgot to post it. Wouldn’t have found the link though, so just as well I didn’t. Remembered my dad pointing it out and telling me about it. That old Leyland also reminded me of a tale he used to tell me, when he had a similar sort of motor, but a Ford left hand drive with a throttle setting on the steering column . He used to collect the milk from farms around Horspath and on cold winter mornings he would set the throttle and run alongside the motor steering through the opening above the door. He said it was the only way to keep his feet warm.

Oiltreader A Good story you remember, here is the real thing !

Found this on bubbs post !

Hello Jakey.
Never took many pics of the cruiser thought it was a bag of c***p so was a bit embarrassed about it !
looking back I wish i had taken lots, this has been the case of quite a few I have driven, if it didnt like it
I didnt take a photo.
Worked for Brs on the Alcan Contract out of Banbury and left during the Daf 2100 era after that I think they had Man’s
I left there in 1990 and went to work at Bookers.
I was on £165 for a 60 hour week at Alcan/Brs and £270 a week for 40 hours max at Bookers. job and finish.
Had to move really !
Brs was still at Merton street when I started !
And Yes Great pic of that Cruiser coming out of Alcan gates !
