Nigel Matthews plant Hire (Banbury Plant Hire)
This truck was driven by Bob withey,

I see the rumours were true about the new Scania  I think I’ve loaded that old tipper around ‘99-2000. Didn’t Matthews have one with an asphalt body aswell but with a yellow cab and the writing quite small on the doors? One of their drivers was involved in that fatal accident with an elderly man in Chippy a few months back which was the pedestrians’ fault so I’ve heard (stepped out without looking?)

Thanks LIGHTSWITCH . Only driver I knew on Banbury was Ken , think He drove a SCANIA 84 SERIES .

Hi Lightswitch,
Just wondered if you were still in contact with Bob (the animal) Withey and what he was doing these days, I’ve known him for over 40 yrs and last time I saw him was in Hooky about six years ago and he was driving a machine for someone. Hope they have’t given Bob that new Scania it would be like giving a gorilla a loaded machine gun.

One of Sheehans’ Hinos loading 40mm shingle at Gill Mill. I bet getting 19t on with those low sides is fun-and keeping it on going around roundabouts

Another one borrowed from Bubbs’ Scrapbook Thread, Which Curtis was this then, Baynards Green, Botley Road, Swindon?

That’s J Curtis from Oday Hill, Abingdon. They used to own JC Waste which was sold to Hales (now Biffa). They’re still going (just) but with no lorries, Tuckwells do their haulage for them. Apparently Curtis have more ground to dig near Abingdon Marina but their plant is ancient and I think what staff are left are all well past retirement age. I’dve thought Curtis and Tuckwells would’ve worked together as they’ve both got ground scattered in the area. Curtis and Tuckwells seem to make money on small loads ie builders collecting ex pit rather than bulk jobs

One for you Jakey, hope it brings back memories, pic was taken in Whitecross Metals, Wootton. According to a note I made on the back of this pic I had used A638 the day before to take a load to Rugby.

Taken Pony Rd, Horsepath outside H&M Yard sometime in mid 70s.

I spent 5 yrs on British Leyland Transport Dept, Cowley as a Young HGV Driver Trainee, 1980-85. 2 pics here show how the fleet changed. Note for you Jakey, Den Thompson’ is the farthest Roadtrain in pic, always immaculate.

Taken sometime in 70s up Horsepath Rd, anyone know whose she was?

The old Exhibition trailer, had some nice days out with this at various motor shows etc.

Not much help but obviously a Conbloc vehicle and parked behind the Premix “indoor” plant in Horspath rd Cowley.

At BRS we had 4 trunks a day from Cowley with Unipart spares, they had all fixed head buffalo’s at that time late 70’s, they were a great set of lads the Cowley drivers, IIRC one of them (Pete?) had a bus snack bar just south of Banbury.

The Conbloc Defenders’ no plate rings a bell; Maybe worked on the fair later on?
I remember seeing the Austin Rover promo wagon around Witney, probably at the Trade Fair, would be around '85? I remember showing more interest in the lorry as Dad drove a Leyland at that time.

Taken up by Car Factory Cowley, anyone driven her or for them?

Keith was always polishing & painting this one! It was Pete Hawkins who had the snack bar on the Banbury road, I think he lived at Deddington.

They’re based in the old Bletchington Station Goods Yard at Enslow. They used to be “Diamond Fuels” I’d presume that unit would’ve been either repainted or bought secondhand after the name change.

As you can see there was a serious identity crisis going on in our fleet in the early 80s! Some of the wagons had British Leyland on, others had Austin Morris, B.L. Cars, Austin Rover or Leyland Cars! But we had 1 hell of an assorted fleet, flatbeds, tautliners, containers, car transporters (covered & open), tankers, dust carts, skip loaders, Marina & Sherpa vans, a great place to do an apprenticeship!
