Hi JAKEY,

When you next speak to Colin please tell him Richard & Angela send their regards we used to ship out with him Alfie & Jock who were also on H&M,from Southampton to Le Havre on a regular basis. I think Colin was a Policeman before he drove for H&M, great days.
Regards
Richard

My first motor when I started with Progressive.

Hi Oiltreader
Is there any of the Progressve management stil around?

oiltreader:
Dieseldogsix,
A load of Triumph Spitfires, most likely on their way to Honeybourne, note the headamps blanked awaiting glass, this would be fitted at storage. Standard Triumph leased storage at Honeybourne airfield in Worcestershire. We used to load Cowley made cars to Coventry then 2 Coventry/Honeybournes, then load from Honeybourne to wherever.
The motor in the pic if I remember correctly would be Brockhouse built with an electric lift for the top deck and skids for the bottoom, we had similar 9 cars but built by Carrimore.

Hi Oiltreader again the traler and body on this vehicle was built by Carter at Tamworth

Hi MaggieD , was that the late Jock fulton , who then went to work on BRS ? , colin is a bit down on his luck these days but he is always smiling ,

Hi transporter man
Progressive management in my time at Cowley were Harry Hopkins, originally from Coventry, where he previously had his own delivery contracts taken over by Progressive, he lived at Shabbington (near Thame), Ricky Jones lived in the flat above the office, then there was Bill Haines, he left and went to manage for I think Lathams at Ramsgate, then after Bill Haines there was Graham Jenkins, he left Cowley(1968/9) to manage a new depot at Southampton for Progressive. this was to move Renaults from the Docks, the contract didn’t last long and the depot closed. Hopkins would have passed on some time ago, the other three may still be around.

I still do not have a clue, magnifying seems to make it less readable.

Muckaway,
These may be of interest. The field with the fair vans was at the bottom of Bell Lane, Cassington

My uncle uses his daughters’ laptop to look at the Smiths pages, I’ll put them onto that and see if one of those Guys was his. Although I think by the time those pictures were taken, he’d got a Foden S39 (bouncing cab version!) The Super Comet the Guy is passing was driven by either Percy Stratford or Tony Gillam as Smiths only had 2 of those lorries. Hatwells are still based at Cassington, although a purpose built winter quarters is currently being built for several showmen at a farm on the Freeland Road, Eynsham being made with crushed rubble from the demolished '50s MOD housing in Carterton (where the Osprey pub used to be)

I gather these are now “Valley Solutions” based at Kings Sutton…

Seeing the picture of the Smith & Sons of Bletchington Foden on Bubbleman’s thread reminded me of when I used to run up and down the old Banbury road in the 60’s. In the evenings there was always one of their motors parked on the side of the road, overnight, outside a cottage. I must have passed it for well over twenty years so obviously a long time servant of the company. Anyone remember it or know of the driver?

Hi George, a picture has at last surfaced of this truck and driver, courtesy of Neil B who put it on the Smiths thread;

and RMC Gaz posted this one of it years later as a dumper (or scrapped by the look of it) at Ardley.

It made a nice noise apparently

Hi Nathan, Yeah did see it on Smith thread, but didn’t like to intrude. Isn’t it wonderful that so many questions can be answered on here and how many people can add interest to so many topics. I bless the day I stumbled upon this site as it has brought me a great deal of pleasure, but this particular topic, I feel, is very humbling. Thank you all. :sunglasses:

This is how to close a road with a Travis Perkins lorry.
Drive straight across road and wedge your rear under run bars into the ground as you go uphill.
unload goods with hiab and have another go.
If all else fails call for help!
Loadall from Matthews Plant hire Hook Norton gave a lift to rear of lorry and saved drivers embarrasment !

No roadtrains! The cruisers were all day cabs except a couple of sleepers.
These are the days when BRS took over the running of Alcan Transport.
Prior to that Alcan ran some loveley Scania 112’s I think they were supplied by salford van hire !
