Just remembered, my brother in law worked at a B.L. stores out that way, I think it was Stanton Harcourt. Never went there though so don’t know exactly where it was. Anyone remember it or know of it.

It could’ve been Stanton Harcourt as there’s an industrial estate there owned by the Burys (used to have the haulage company based there). BL could’ve used one of the old hangers there (it was a wartime Raf bomber training airfield).

Hi Big J, Yes BMC Ltd leased one or possibly two of the old aircraft hangers at Stanton Harcourt, a lot of the space was taken by pallets of panelwork, spare wings and body components being prepared before distribution to garages. Also a lot of the exhaust pipes made at radiators branch were also stored there if there was aproduction imbalance. In my day it was mostly BMC 12 ton tractor units with scammell mechanical automatic coupling gear and 25 foot flat trailers, all sheeted loads if it was raining.

Did you ever hear a story that an old aircraft engine was found in a crate in one of the hangers? It’s a bit of myth around here, along with the ghost stories…
I can remember going to Stanton Harcourt hangers from Unipart Cowley when I worked for Dines around '74, don’t you love those narrow roads in an artic!

So roughly, what year would that have been? only I spoke to my sister last night and she said my brother in law transferred to Eynsham from Cowley stores some time in the '60s. She said he only went to Stanton Harcourt on odd days, but can’t remember why this was, and left in ’ 75 to go to university as a mature student. I have a recollection of him telling me he was there as he mentioned an old school friend of mine, Mick Davey, delivering into there on several occasions, who was driving for the Morris/ B/L organization, who ever it was at that time. (or could have been J. Harding /B.R.S.)
Nice pic Muckaway and this is a wee bit about the main man and possibly why the Foden is William by name.

Hi oiltreader, Another interesting post you put on there and like you said, a great pic. from Muckaway, well done Nathan. I have been trying to find a local fair operator for some time, for a model I am doing, and had seen an article about Hebborns, but didn’t know what his livery was. Oh a question for you oiltreader, did you get my P.M. last week?

Dad started working for Smiths, based at Stanton pit (nextdoor) in '78 and Burys had the haulage and a contracting division based on what is now the trading estate then. I can remember the ind estate really getting going in the '80s; some of the hangers still stand and at least one still has it’s airplane doors. These hangers generally housed Whitley and Halifax bombers (took part in the first 1000 bomber raid and also attacked the Tirpitz and Scharnhorst from there) rafabingdon10otu.co.uk/index.html
Old Roly! He used to do a bit for Smiths but I havent seen him for a while. He does a lot for SG Harris Groundworks and tips at Newmans old pit at Cross Hands.
Hi BigG-Unit,
No pm received.

Oh! thanks, just tried again then!!
A cracking link to the RAF Abingdon thread Nathan, took me right back to my childhood. I have recollections of the distant past, probably some of my earliest memories, standing in our back garden, and watching the planes flying across after taking off from Abingdon. Dad would be telling us the different makes, but the only ones I could clearly recognize, at that early age, was the Lockheed Lightning, or what I thought was called the Lucky Lightning! Quite a surprise to see the list of planes that crashed locally, don’t remember hearing anything about them! To keep on topic though, it reminded me of the old RAF Bedfords and the Queen Mary trailers. We used to see a few of those about and thought they were colossal in them days, wondering how the chaps ever got them around.
There are a fair few pics. of them on various sites, so easy to Google, but I’m not sure which would be permissible to post.
Another one of Hebborns, I have re-sized from a thumbnail, so the livery gets a wee bit lost.
oiltreader.
Another Oxfordshire Showmans’ firm; Hatwells
Hatwells ran this as a tractor unit for many years. Painted blue it used to pull “The Satellite”
Found on Bubbs’ thread (again-such a treasure trove )
Here’s another one I sifted out of a gaggle on, I think it was, Bubb’s Scrapbook thread, then didn’t get round to posting.
Not sure if this is one of Morris Motors own transporters, anyone got a clue.
