Hi all
Have been with Gilbert Harding’s son Stuart today,he has sent me some pictures of Carmans Transport and Chapman & Ball for me to post. The picture below was the first ever run that Carmans did to the Middle East, Gilbert Harding drove the Scania and Ron Snape drove the Volvo.

Hi there, excellent pic, please post more

My late father - Arthur Sproston - worked at Carmans/Brit European from the mid Sixties until mid Nineties. He worked with Gilbert and Ron.
If I recall, that first run Gilbert did to the ME was for Twyfords, a load of toilets, etc for a new hotel in Abu Dhabi.
Some clever person put a sign on the back of the trailer. It said "BOGS FOR THE W*** !"but don’t quote me as it was way back in the early Seventies.

Also 2 things I remeber about Ron Snape, he used string to hold his trousers up and he had a new Datsun (Nissan now) every year. Always booked 1st August off as a holiday so he could collect it at midnight !!!

I am sure BESTBOOTIES (Ian Taylor) on here has lots more stories to tell too.

I have mentioned many of my old mates on Brit European in various posts on this thread and the Astran/Middle East thread.
I think Brits biggest customer in the early days was Twyfords,we carried bogs to every destination in the m/e.
I was speaking to Gilbert’s son at the drivers reunion at the Moat House a couple of years ago.
Sam Costa was there,he for one didn’t look any older!Well at least I could recognise him which is more than can be said for many more drivers there.
Must finish my book before I’m too old, many anecdotes, but no names,to protect the guilty!

a few pics sent to me by bunchy from breezey’s collection . enjoy
