Chris Webb:
Are Carless Chemicals still going at Longport? They used to be known as Carless,Capel and Leonard, main plant was at Harwich.
I think these photos were taken at Longport, the plant was near the railway and Shelton steelworks IIRC.I haven’t been in there since mid-70s.A mate of mine took these in later years.
quote]

I went past their site last week on my exercise walk,(lost over a stone in 6 weeks),and the Carless site is derelict,There’s a waste removal firm using half the site,in fact there are quite a number of waste processors down Chemical Lane,it’s big business now.
I’ll try and take some pics next time I’m down there.

I haven’t seen Pritch for a few years,Carl Cornes was night manager at ANC/Fedex until a few months ago, don’t know where he is now.I saw Bunchy and Ray Gould at the drivers reunion at the Moat House.I think we will have to have another reunion while there’s still some of us left.

Herman Tideswell was always an AEC man.
Like Vic Wild was always a Gardner man,ERF’s or Atki’s.
That is until Gardners had just brought out the 240 and Vic Wild was in the process of updating the fleet when Gardners went on strike, this would be 1973-74.
The next 240 Atki was going to have been mine, but I had to wait.
Then, one Sunday afternoon,Vic was mowing his lawn when he heard the unmistakable sound of a Gardner 240,and saw one go past,in Herman Tideswell’s colours!
On the Monday morning Vic rang Gardners up and wanted to know why an AEC fleet owner was able to get a 240,when an established Gardner user had to wait.He told Gardners they could shove their 240’s where the sun don’t shine, and a week later he bought a brace of DAF 2600’s.
I had one and I’m not sure if the young John Taylor didn’t have the other one.
The expression Chalk and Cheese come into play here!

Working for Cooke & Copestake was my first driving job after leaving the army in 1968.At the time I was there, they had two artics, both Albion Rievers.
They were based at Smallwood on the A50 about 5 miles south of Holmes Chapel.

Hi All,

Tetragaz, sorry to here about your misfortune, I’ll say hello if I see you about.

Bestbooties, re Cooke and Copestake, the 2 Cooke sons had there own company based out of Parkhouse, PHI (parkhouse International) they used to run to Spain with JCBs before Brit took over the contract, bought a couple of Eurostars off me, good lads, also had a garage on parkhouse were they ran from.

Anyway back to some photos for you all, had these off Lee Durose, the 1st one being a very young Lee himself with his Dads AEC at Mosspack Trentham.

The next 2 are of Lee’s 1st truck when going on European as Lee Durose International for Frans Maas, this was an ex Mark Young motor, 1st photo taken on Neiderdorf border Venlo 1990

Regarding the query about Carless Chemicals in Chemical Lane ,Longport.
I was down there this morning, took a few pics.
As can be seen from the first pic,as I said before, most of the site is now derelict, used for parking some old trailers and skips and piles of scrap.
A small part of the site is run by Castle Envoirenmental,a local waste disposal firm. There were 3 of Billy Bowie’s in there this morning.
(Didn’t see you down there Gaz!)

Ant,
I never even knew Eric Cooke had two sons, but there again, when I worked for him they would have been very young. The only other member of his family I knew was his brother Percy who was company fitter when I was there.

hey ian

Hi ya I’ve just been given these. Can anyone better these photos of Beeches Diamond T.AND WHERE IS SHE NOW■■?

Thanks John.

With the Holmes wrecking gear, that’s identical to the one we had on Keele MSA in about 1971.

Hello everybody, I used to know a good old boy by the name Pete Willis (Cooperman on the CB) who drove for Longton and N. Staffs transport. Does the name ring any bells with anyone, we had a few nights out in the early 80’s and I’d love to know what he’s up to theese days. Cheers, Haddy -Gt.Yarmouth.
