Willie, Harry Gill is working for Matthews from Great Yarmouth. I think we are on about the same guy from Longton? used to share a yard with him when he had his own trucks, a couple of old Magnums, one an ex Nobby Dentrasangle one, that he used to go over the water with. He packed up a couple of years ago, thats when he started on Matthews, He drives an FH on cloggy plates, can see him him a mile off cos of all the crap he keeps in his windscreen!, Parks down Mossfield Road, on the rare occasion that hes home. Have heard many a tale off Harry

Bugcos,

Thatā€™s who drives it then, Iā€™ve seen it parked there a few times myself when going to see IAE

Regards
Ant

Welcome gaz,
Ashley Transport was started by ā– ā– ā– ā–  Chapman,(One half of Chapman and Ball),and big Ron MacDonald after C & B folded.
It was called Ashley Transport because ā– ā– ā– ā–  Chapman lived at Ashley, near Market Drayton.Their big job when they started was hauling fly ash in silo tankers.
ā– ā– ā– ā–  Chapman passed away some years ago and big Ron was living in Spain, donā€™t know if heā€™s still alive.

Ant Donā€™t know about the nickname only met him the once a larger than life character and very chatty iirc.

Does anyone know or remember Albert Dale a Beresford subbie who lived at Ash nr Dover.I have a few cuttings of when he got a then new MAN 22 361 I think .I know one piece was a LDD in Truck & Driver. Will have a dig around at home.

As well as the LDD in T&D, featuring Albert, there was also a cracking LDD afew years before.
A JCB liveried ERF Bseries going to Germany if i remember rightly (Truck 1978 ), i have got the mag but its in the loft at the mo. A very good read if your interested in Bresfords.

Hi Mark
I have the JCB ERF article but where I cut it out its welded itself in one of my albums. I asked Dreva the resident LDD man on here but he didnā€™t have it so if you manage to find it would be good if you can get it on .I have a lot of other Beresford cuttings and interviews but its hard to prize them out of albums. Will have to think of a way round it.

Hi Bestbooties
I see you have resently spoken to my brother ā€œthe Heavy Mobā€ about our father Peter Millington from Whitchurch.I am the brother that went ME with him two up in a day cab 110 in the spring and summer of 1976 for Chapman and Ball. You just mentioned C+B Folded, did they go bust ,as i thought they were taken over by someone in Manchester. what year was that? and am i right in thinking the Ball in C+B was a sleeping partner. some one said he used to have tippers in SOT.

Regards Keith.

has anyone found some chapman ball photos yet they seem to be the one firm thats missing

Hi Carl
Here is a few photos we took at our yard near Whitchurch in 1976 when we sub to C+B Has any one got any more?
After our first trip with a tatty tilt we were entrusted with this brand new one with boxes and 500 gallon bellytank. the square water tank did not last one trip before it cracked on the corners, back to a barrel:
Thats me leaning in the cab with my father Peter Millington by the door. there was not much room in there for us both but we kept it going so not much time to sleep. I was only 19 at this time but still took my turn driving as soon as we crossed the water. Also note the extra fuel tank strapped to the rear of the cab as well as a Hatcher type tank across the chassie.
The lad on the bike is my brother Robert ā€œThe Heavy Mobā€

cracking photos mate didnt know they ran scanias ive seen the fiats on there brief appearence on destination doha

Hi Carl
We were only subing to C+B for a short time and do not remember any other Scanias on at that time, although i beleave Robert Dodds-Brown had a 141 with a ā€œMagic Carpetā€ mural on the cab side but are not shore when that was.We only saw Fiats when we were there. There was a firm from just north of Bristol along side of the M5 that ran two or three Fiats in C+B colours the same time as us.
There was a friend of ours called Freddy Brown from Wigon who did a trip to Iraq for them. He had a bad trip with weather and brakedowns taking ten weeks his first and last trip. He had a Daf 2200. I havent heard of him for thirty years, he had two sons the eldist called Steven was last heard of doing UK. Does anyone remember them.

Regards Keith.

It is probably unusual to see a Graylease Truck and Trailer in the desert. I imagine then, as now, it would be difficult to take a hire truck to a far away destination like the middle east. When Robin Gray started out he had many smaller customers and there were a few owner drivers from Hull who dabbled in the Middle Eastern routes. Bob Bradshaw (Early Riser) Kenneth Matthews (BB Read and Matthews Transport) and John Dobson (Dobsons) There were also companies such as Wake Transport who had been to Nigeria overland.

I will send a link to that picture to someone who may be able to help.

Could anybody tell me the Relationship between G B Lovatt and E & E Transport?? i know they share the same address and a simular livery, are they sister coā€™s or has one bought the other?? If anybody has any photos of their ERFs in the 80ā€™s and 90ā€™s it would be very helpfull, Cheers, Chris

Pictured in the yard September 2001, and with a very fine-sounding Straight-8! I used to love the E&E lorry names - hereā€™s ā€˜Attila the Hunā€™, and there was also ā€˜Hannibal of Carthageā€™.

Iā€™m not sure of the relationship, and I was a customer! But they shared the office, the yard and the livery, and Lovatt seemed to be emerging as the dominant name, although I may be wrong. I havenā€™t seen an E&E-liveried motor for some time, though.

Although I worked for C & B for two years before they folded, thatā€™s the one firm I didnā€™t get to take any pics.
I do now have some pics, they were sent to me by truckerash so he has the copyright.
I donā€™t recall them running any Scanias of their own but they did have several Scania driving subbies, including Robert Dodds-Brown.

Hi gaz,
Funny you should mention that particular F88.AEH 754H was the one I had when I first started on Carmans.
I did a couple of weeks tramping in her, then spent a week in the workshops preparing her for my first M/E trip to Baghdad.
She got there and back, but only just.Found out when I was having trouble on an unmade road over Mardin that the diff lock had been removed!,nearly lost the old girl but stuck with her and got home.I think she was retired after that.
Here are some pics of her.

great pics ian

i will dig the pic that i have of the old girl & post it up,

some more of your toprun pics have inspired me to do models of a couple of the trucks that you used to drive, the first 1 being the carmans ford transconti & the yellow with blue stripe either the 141 or the 142 ive not decided yet, although i might do both if i can get hold of the unitā€™s

cheers mate

Cracking picture and a cracking motor! I saw a E&E livered EC11 olyimpic a few weeks ago on the A13, but i must say that i do see more Lovatt motors than E&E. I remember that they had an E16 6x2 unit that they converted into a chinese 6 rigid, out went the 320LYT and in went a 6LXB180!. I seem to remember that it never stayed like that for long as it was converted back to an artic!Retaining its Gardner 180 i ithink it ran with a single axle trailer. Brilliant pic that 240, i love them big 8ā€™s, proper engine!!! Cheers

does any body have any pictures of jack critchlow truck or Nixonā€™s from sandyford ,Spencerā€™s transport or any other company from stoke
