Bill Kevin had 4 Dodges the other 3 were driven by Phil Fox, Clem Humphreys and Bill Tranter sadly all 3 are no longer with us. I dropped for a couple of endorsements and did a job swop with Brian Carr (Alans brother) who worked on the tar plant with Charlie, Tom Grindey and Dave Ball, which was good money but 68+hrs a week. I stuck that till i moved to Tideswells in 1969 and retired in 2005. Also did few years for Gordon Eaton, B i S, Pandoro & Tarmac Cauldon Low. Who was the haulage company from Newcastle on Tyne who loaded the bagged lime out of Gregory
s ?. Hope you are keeping well, Dave Barber
Dave
There were only two Dodges when I was there so the other 2 must have come later after I left, Clem was still driving for A Clowes as I was at that time, nice chap Clem. I remember Phil also, in the early seventies when I went back to Kevin but working from Tilcon, I had my last wagon off Phil TRB131K a Foden S50 half cab. But it went quiet in the mid seventies and it was all short runs which I wasn’t too keen on and I wanted artic work so I got a job at Manor Bakeries (Mr Kipling), I was there for 14 years, it was a good job the one drawback was that you didn’t have your own motor you were a fleet driver, so you drove everything from artics to 16 ton rigids.
After that I went to Swift Transport Services at Elswick Road Fenton, they were quite a large company with depots all over the UK. They were taken over by Christian Salvesen and later after my time taken over again by Norbert Dentressangle. I stayed there until I retired in 2001.
The name of the firm from Newcastle on Tyne was Armstrong Cork Ltd, blue Leyland Comets. I’ve attached a photograph taken at Stafford 30 years ago, where has all the time gone!
I think the last time I saw you, I was on Kipling and I picked you up around Hanchurch and dropped you off somewhere down the M5, do you remember? More happy days. Hope you’re keeping well also.

Dan,
Would this be outside Longtons?I’ve only one thing to say (unusual) Basil Ainsworth
Bloody hell, Tony - you can’t half rake 'em up - yet another blast from the past! Is he still around, do you know?
All Edgar’s Mercs came from him, and I remember once trying (without success) to get ET to buy a Spanish Dodge from him too. He didn’t - and bought me an F88 instead!BTW - I wasn’t able to make contact with Rob while I was home; I’ve asked my daughter to go round and find him when she has a mo. I’ll let you know.
Steve
Basil died a few years ago.He used to come down from Mertrucks to have a chat with me at T.C.H.but I think it was a find out situation. In the area I did get mentioned to me Basil quite a bit, he sold quite a few B.M.C’s.I think he sold Fred Harrison some who of course is in the selling job at Clifton (not heard anything about Fred is he still about ? I sold him a couple of Traders one whilst sitting on a window cill at the Bowling Green at Ashbourne. It was hard work selling then but more enjoyable dealing with “down to earth chaps” I used to like going to see owner driver’s in the evenings when they were were relaxed but even then the company so called dealer managers weren’t aware of that this went on and didn’t know how the job worked.I don’t know if you can remember but Basil sold Sellers and Kent a six x two B.M.C.
He did a bit of wedding car driving for Stoddard’s I think too.
Mick Richards was another chap I came across a bit from LLoyds of Stafford, now Bristol Street and he would go anywhere at anytime.Mind you he did get a driving ban after having a cellebration after the deal was done.I think the Clifford Alms was on his list.I think his daughter used to drive him round to do his job.I hope I won’t get sued for this talk in case I’m wrong your Worship.
Tony

Strange point that the last picture shows a BE registration which I think would be Grimsby registered and not a Stoke (Longtons home ground) Reg number although I stand to be corrected

Hi Tony
Mick Richards now there’s a name from the past used to follow him around the Stafford area when I started at Chatfields in 96 - Chatfields took the Iveco -Ford franchise from Lloyds and I used to call on customers down there and they would say, that they had had a visit from Mick from Lloyds trying to sell them trucks only the other day !! He’d been retired for a few years and Lloyds no longer had the franchise - !!! Obviously couldn’t let go

Brilliant.
I have just been looking at Bassett’s yard on Google Earth as I can remember an old transport café called The Woodley which was southbound on the A34 late sixties/early seventies. Can anybody tell me if The Woodley was the same building which is now The Computer Centre as I am sure that the café was very close to Bassett’s.
Regards Steve.

Steve,
I believe it’s been a Little Chef now for a good many years.
There was another café a few hundred yards further on, was it The Silver Birch? and is that not now Malcolm Harrison’s?
Although I drive down to Tittensor several times a week, I turn left to visit my sister in law in Barlaston before getting as far as that so I must admit, I’m out of touch with such a local stretch of road, must drive that bit next week!
