Boatchaser:
Did Bassetts have a small depot in Tipton on the corner Locarno Rd. Across the road I think was Triplex Glass ■■?
Hi Boatchaser,
It was the Triplex Foundry, demolished and houses on site now, I cannot remember Bassets there but a Scottish operator had a yard opposite Triplex may have been McKelvies, You got me thinking now Bassets may have been in County Cranes yard corner of Locarno Road and Upper Church lane? will ask at weekend for you, Cheer’s Pete
I’ve only one thing to say (unusual) Basil Ainsworth
Bloody hell, Tony - you can’t half rake 'em up - yet another blast from the past! Is he still around, do you know?
All Edgar’s Mercs came from him, and I remember once trying (without success) to get ET to buy a Spanish Dodge from him too. He didn’t - and bought me an F88 instead!
BTW - I wasn’t able to make contact with Rob while I was home; I’ve asked my daughter to go round and find him when she has a mo. I’ll let you know.
Steve
Do you remember Regent Motors at Derby down Ascot Drive ( still there) and started in Regent Street Street in Derby.Barry Biffen and Mick Harris.Carl ( Mick’s son ) now runs the job.Barry called on me soon after my wife Val died and he is a very sentimental chap and still in the real world, none of the board meeting ■■■■.Go and lean on a gate and deal.
Tony
Basil died a few years ago.He used to come down from Mertrucks to have a chat with me at T.C.H.but I think it was a find out situation. In the area I did get mentioned to me Basil quite a bit, he sold quite a few B.M.C’s.I think he sold Fred Harrison some who of course is in the selling job at Clifton (not heard anything about Fred is he still about ? I sold him a couple of Traders one whilst sitting on a window cill at the Bowling Green at Ashbourne. It was hard work selling then but more enjoyable dealing with “down to earth chaps” I used to like going to see owner driver’s in the evenings when they were were relaxed but even then the company so called dealer managers weren’t aware of that this went on and didn’t know how the job worked.I don’t know if you can remember but Basil sold Sellers and Kent a six x two B.M.C.
He did a bit of wedding car driving for Stoddard’s I think too.
Mick Richards was another chap I came across a bit from LLoyds of Stafford, now Bristol Street and he would go anywhere at anytime.Mind you he did get a driving ban after having a cellebration after the deal was done.I think the Clifford Alms was on his list.I think his daughter used to drive him round to do his job.I hope I won’t get sued for this talk in case I’m wrong your Worship.

Is this the Northern Powerhouse we keep hearing about ■■?
Brilliant.
I have just been looking at Bassett’s yard on Google Earth as I can remember an old transport café called The Woodley which was southbound on the A34 late sixties/early seventies. Can anybody tell me if The Woodley was the same building which is now The Computer Centre as I am sure that the café was very close to Bassett’s.
Regards Steve.
Steve,
I believe it’s been a Little Chef now for a good many years.
There was another café a few hundred yards further on, was it The Silver Birch? and is that not now Malcolm Harrison’s?
Although I drive down to Tittensor several times a week, I turn left to visit my sister in law in Barlaston before getting as far as that so I must admit, I’m out of touch with such a local stretch of road, must drive that bit next week!
Ian
Had the opportunity to drive down the A34 again last week and was able to see the sites mentioned.
What was The Woodley and then a Little Chef is now The Bengal Lodge, and what was the Silver Birch, later Malcolm Harrison’s, is now the Stone Van Rental.
Love the colour pic of the Beresford Foden 6 legger. Looking at it my guess is that it has a load of pottery flints on the back - up from Darenth, or East Cliffe in Kent, and to be shovelled off - back-breaking work. This would have been in the fleet when I worked at Beresfords in the mid-60s. I have always preferred this earlier colour combination to the later grey, green and yellow of the more recent fleet.
