Dan,
Would this be outside Longtons?

This chap was known as the Barron ,he worked from Kevin quarry with a New Bedford tk 8 wheeler single drive with a leyland comet engine and 1800 Eaton 2 speed ,at the same time walchesters had an 8 wheeler Thames trader .

Pretty sure that’s a Gypsy in Longtons showroom going by the door handle. I remember folk talking about ‘the Barron’ but he was before my time around Kevin quarry, I bet John Wareham and Bill Clews would know of him, is Bill still on this forum I wonder?

Pete.

Evening all,

Pete, you could well be right, about it being a Gypsy. The Land Rover franchise must have come much later.

Dan, do you remember the US kit Walchesters ran? I think they had a Ford ex Mervyn Jackson from Sedgley, as well as an International Trans Star.

Cheerio for now

Not sure really ,I may be remembering from photographs I’ve seen a while ago , infact I’ve some pics ,I’ll have a look tomorrow .

On the subject of Walchesters - does any one recall old man Hall, and his son from Biddulph Moor - they ran Morris Commercials (tippers with greedy boards) and were regular visitors to Beresford Transport? My memory is a bit hazy but one of the Morris Commercials was a chinese six, and am I dreaming but was the other an eight legger?

Hiya Pete,
I’m still on the forum still follow it regularly, many thanks to all who contribute it’s a great site. With regard to ‘the Barron’ I cannot remember him or seeing an 8 wheeler Bedford during my time there but there was a green 6 wheeler Bedford that I remember because it was a pain if you got behind it, she was not over blessed with power.
I worked with John Wareham while I was there we used to be on ‘early tarmac’ we ran many miles together if you could keep up with him - he didn’t mess about. At the time I worked for Allen Clowes from Wetley Rocks and drove a blue Thames Trader. I liked working at Kevin they were a good crowd both drivers and plant men. Other drivers I remember from there are Bailey’s from Ash Bank, Plants from Cheadle, Dougie Beardmore from Plants of Tean, Tim Merrick who had his own truck. Happy days.
I worked for Tilcon later in the seventies out of Kevin, first on a Foden S36 8 wheeler then a Foden S50 half cab 8 wheeler, both good trucks but times had changed and I only did about 2 years.

Bill Clowes

Good to know you are ok Bill, apologies for spelling your name wrongly! Tim Merrick’s lad Duncan had a lorry in Kevin when I left Ballidon (he was attacked by a tarmac gang from Liverpool while delivering tarmac in Macclesfield and had his jaw broken I believe, they didn’t like his Stoke City flag) but I haven’t a clue where anybody is nowadays. John Wareham is still around though and I spoke to Alan Alcock at Caulden Lowe the other week, he drove for Edwards before he came to Tilcon/Kevin and had recently seen Alan Carr.

Pete.

Ah, Shelton Steelworks! We lost half of John Wareham’s Foden cab there, it was hit by a train. :open_mouth:

Hi Paul
I’ve known Joe since the late 1950s when he used to deliver cattle food for C. Leese of Shelton to my father’s farm at Parkhall. He was a tenant farmer and had to leave the farm in the mid sixties to make way for housing development.
Shortly afterwards Allen offered me a job driving working from Kevin. I had little or no lorry driving experience but I was keen to try it – it was s steep learning curve. My first job was on a Thames Trader with a platform body loading from Kevin, 9 tons of bagged limestone for delivery to Talke, sack-truck loading at Kevin handball at Talke, three loads a day 5.30 am start at the quarry.
I did that for about a year, when Joe went on Ballidon work I asked Allen if I could have Joe’s lorry 2758EH, and he let me take it over. I enjoyed the job and developed a liking for tippers and quarry work.
Photographs, unfortunately I have none to offer, very few drivers had cameras in those days so photographs from that era are quite rare, I wish I’d had a camera then; the pictures would have been interesting to say the least.

Little Len at the wheel ! I remember them fitting a turbo to that 180 powered Guy as an experiment, Len said it went no faster just whistled loud

Hi again Bill
I remember that run you used to do to Gregory’s at Talke, I think when you moved on to my dad’s old lorry his cousin John Tatton took on your old lorry on that run, I seem to remember that trader had a lower body than the rest & it had double rams. I think Chris had it from new. some of the other Clowes drivers I remember were Jimmy ex Salmon & Jones, Harry,Dave Beardmore,Eric & George Clowes. With reference to my Dad’s previous job on Leese’s I found a picture of it a few years ago in vintage commercial magazine , so I wrote to them & they kindly sent a few photo’s of it.It was just a shame Dad did not get to see it as he passed away a couple of years before. As I said before it’s funny how we remember all these memories as I would have been about 6 at the time. Thanks for the memories Bill & yes I can remember you also!!!
Cheers
Paul

I drove for Kevin Quarries on one of the Dodge tippers that they had new in March 1965 and well remember the sack truck on and handball off loads of bagged limestone to Gregories at Talke, wages were around £22 a week and like most driving jobs then you took the lorry home. Bill all the names of drivers you mention i worked with including Johny Wareham and Tim Merrick plus many more. Contractors in Kevin then were Plant Brothers, Lymers, Bailey`s, Plants of Tean and a few Italion owner drivers who always ran on the red stuff.David Harber had a lot of short wheel base Traders and the Barron with a few motors did mostly subsidised agricultural limestone to farms. The Barons Bedford TK was a tidy 6wheeler but he ran a lot of tat over the years and collected gv9s like most people collected green shield stamps. Happy days hey!

Bloody hell, Tony - you can’t half rake 'em up - yet another blast from the past! Is he still around, do you know?
All Edgar’s Mercs came from him, and I remember once trying (without success) to get ET to buy a Spanish Dodge from him too. He didn’t - and bought me an F88 instead!

BTW - I wasn’t able to make contact with Rob while I was home; I’ve asked my daughter to go round and find him when she has a mo. I’ll let you know.

Hi Paul
A few more here to stir your memory, 1833VT a long wheelbase Ford Trader with a steel dropside tipper body, another was 637VEH a Ford Trader with a high-sided tipper body, which was Jim’s wagon until he had the new D series. I still see Jim occasionally in Longton but I haven’t seen him for at least a year. Drivers you may remember are Clem Humphries from Meir and Stan (sorry I forget his surname) who used to drive a green Ford Trader on Croxden work. Harry, who lived in Hamilton road Normacot used to park is lorry with mine by the side of Longton Cottage Hospital. I knocked him up one early morning at some unearthly hour to give me a tow start, Harry didn’t seem to mind but I don’t think his wife was overly pleased.
Regards Bill

Hi three piece-wheel
I remember those two white Dodge tippers and drivers quite well,I remember your names but I’m not sure which one of you sent the email so I’ll mention no names unless you agree. You could out-run our lowly Traders easily but it was all taken in good part.
A few more names from the distant past, Alan Carr in the weighbridge who did a difficult job very well, others I remember were Charlie Rushden and Charlie ■■ from Mayfield in the bagged lime section. Three lads from the tarmac plant but can’t remember their names. Oh and Toby the manager.
You mention the Barons TK, was that a green 6-legger? If so I remember you were ****** if you got behind it, as you know on tarmac you couldn’t hang around or else the one who loaded after you would get to the job before you, so you now know why we were always on the lookout for white Dodges in our mirrors. As you say happy days.
Bill
